T4 2-2-1 Forecheck - Puck Behind the Net – RB Pro

Key Points:
A turnover in the offensive end results in a scoring chance about 25% of the time while a nzone turnover gets a scoring chance about 10% and a rush from the defensive zone less than 5% of the time. So a passive trap may prevent goals against but doesn't create near as many scoring chances.

Pinch comes from both sides.
On possession overload the puck side with weak side back door option.

Description:
2-2-1 With Puck Behind the Net
1. Force from original puck side.
2. Pressure first low pass to other D.
3. Pre pinch position on original puck side.
4. Pre pinch position on weak side.
5. Support from point and mirror the puck side
B. Overload Strong Side on Possession
1. First 3 low players cycle and go to net.
2. # 4 support from high slot and go back door
3. #5 Support from strong side point.

DT100 - Transition Game of Support, Defend, Attack U18 F

DT100 - Transition Game of Support, Defend, Attack U18 F

Key Points:
This is a great full ice transition game to practice offense and defense in all three zones. I have done this the last 2 practices with my team and my skills group. The coach can decide what to focus on each time you do it. Instead of stopping the game talk to the players when they come back to the line. You can do this from 1-1 to a 3-3. I will put a modification that adds other nuances to the game at another date.

Point men only get one second with the puck to shoot or pass. Defenders cover the low players and ignore the pointmen.

Description:
A. 1 and 2 attack vs a and b and are supported on the blueline by 3 and 4 The pointmen cannot go farther than the top of the circle. When the puck goes to the point a and b control te sticks of 1 and 2.

Attackers cycle, screen, tip, drive the net. Defenders work on low coverage and B.O.

B. When a and b breakout over the blueline 1 and 2 are finished and there is a 2 on 2 in the nzone with a and b attacking 3 and 4.
C. After the puck crosses the blueline c and d support a and b from the point.

DT100 - Defend-Attack with Regroups - U18 F

Content:

DT100 - Defend-Attack with Regroups - U18 F

Key Points:
Attacking team regroup with the new supporting players on the coaches whistle.
Supporting point men stay at the point and only get the puck for one second before passing or shooting. they defend the breakout. Coach may or may not whistle.

This is a great progression from the original transition game in the last posting.

Description:
1. 1 offense attack vs 2 on defense.
2. Attackers get support from teammates 2.
3. Breakout and attack 2-2 vs supporting point men.
4. If the coach blows the whistle regroup with 3 who follow the play.
Continue with 2 new players supporting each rush.
6. #3 follow the play and supports from the blueline.
7. Try to score vs the 2 the original defense.

Options:The coach may blow the whistle to indicate a regroup. The offensive players pass back to the supporting players. They now line up behind the blue instead of red line. They may do a D to D or pass to the original players who should be on the wall and in the middle or maybe switching. Defenders must keep tight gaps instead of simply backing in.

If there is a turnover the defenders attack the other way vs the new supporting players.

DT400 - 3 on 3 Attack-Defend-Breakout-Rest - U18 W

Posted on: December 06 2009 @ 12:11 PM
By: TomM

Content:

DT400 - 3 on 3 Attack-Defend-Breakout-Rest - U18 W

Key Points:
Create offense by cycling, crossing etc. and play man to man defense. To add more intensity play a timed game and keep score or play to a certain amount of goals. i.e. first team to 3 wins.

Description:
3 players attack and 3 defend (it could be any number or odd man situations)

The attacking team tries to score and the defending team must get it over the blue line in complete possession or the attack continues.

If the puck is dumped out it is a loose puck and the offense can regain it or defense make the pass.
Offsides are called and the other team gets the puck. Defenders stay inside the blue line when the transition pass is made.

The players on the defending team wait for the puck in the neutral .zone. If there is one game going on wait behind the red line. If two games or a half ice practice then wait within a stick length of the red line.

Rule modifications can be added in order to create situations. i.e. dump and chase, only forechand passes, only one timers etc.

Have tournaments during practice. The 2-2 example needs 16 players for 4 teams of 4. Rotate extras in. Great way to create competition and maybe decide who dresses for the next game if you have extras.

This is a great transition game to practice cycling, low zone coverage and use all of the individual offensive and defensive skills of hockey.

T4 Back Pressure

Posted on: December 23 2009 @ 12:57 PM
By: TomM

Content:

T4 Back Pressure

Back pressure allows the D to really play a tight gap on the attacker and stand up on him if you have an angle. The forward coming back can pick up the loose puck or a chip behind. Also if the attacker delays he is skating into the back pressure.

Some teams only back pressure thru the nzone and then peel off. I think it is best to create the defensive 2-1 and only peel off if you are out numbered. Creating offensive and defensive 2-1's is the key to the game.

Key Points:
D1 play a good gap and F1 pursue from behind. If it is an odd number situation where another attacker is not covered then F1 and D1 communicate and F1 pick him up.

Description:
1. D1 play a 1-1 with the puck carrier from the D side.

2. D2 play the second attacker in the middle or wide lane.

3. F1 pursue the puck carrier from the inside if possible.

4. F2 come back to cover the trailer.

5. F3 come back to the mid slot.

After the attack F1 stay in the zone and play the low 3-3.

Content:

D200 Cross Ice Games with Jokers

Key Points:
Jokers can only pass or shoot and cannot join the attack. Defenders don't check the jokers but cover the pass receivers. To make it more gamelike the jokers must move when they get the puck instead of just standing there.

Description:
Play cross ice with the extra players lines up on the sides.

Game One
Jokers behind the offensive net must be passed to before shooting. Great for give and go as well as one timer practice.

Game Two
When the defending team gets the puck they must regroup with the jokers behind their net. Use one or two jokers and practice the breakout. Jokers may pass to each other.

Game Three
Jokers on the side can be passed to and must return the pass or shoot. This is great for puck support as well as the defenders covering pass receivers.

B Anaerobic Skills Practice

You can do this using a few activities at a time as a circuit or do one activity at a time with a small group.

Key Points:
Players skate hard in all activities. Quick feet, no gliding.

Description:
Small Group Anaerobic Skills Practice

1. Skate with the puck avoiding pucks and making many direction changes. Finish with a shot after doing each circle. 5" between whistles.

2. Play a 1-1 cross ice tournament of 45" games. Lines on the boards are the goals.

3. Exchange pucks, passing, making moves, touch knees, 1 puck, 2 pucks, pivot, etc.

4. The iron cross. Forward-stop, left-stop, forward--stop, right-stop, back and take a shot.

5. Skate around the circle passing 3 times each way then shoot.

6. This is a practice I ran the other night with a small group. I don't have room on the diagram but we had 5 skaters and finished with a game of 2 on 2 in one zone and the extra player was a joker. When you regained the puck you have to regroup with the joker before scoring. Players rotate as the joker for a rest.

D Nets Back to Back with Jokers

D Nets Back to Back with Jokers

Key Points:
Jokers can only have the puck 1 second and then must pass or shoot. You can add that they must move sideways or back when they get the puck.

Description:
Place the nets back to back at the red line.

-Half the team play and half are jokers. Shifts 30".

-When the team gets the puck on defense they must pass to a joker before they can score. Jokers can move around on the perimeter.

If you have only one goalie then it is a great conditioning - skating drill for the goalie to play for both teams and skate around to the other goal.

T2 1-3-1 Power Play

This is the power play used by most NHL and pro teams now.

Key Points:
You have 4 triangles to work with all with one timers. Middle player give a short pass to a player under pressure.

Description:
The players set up with one in front, one in the mid slot, two at each dot on their off wings for one timers and a good playmaker-shooter at the point.

Usually start with the slot set pplay and move into the 1-3 -1 when the puck gets to the mid point. You can also start with an overload and a player moves to the middle.

The goal of a power play is to produce rebounds, one timers or deflections and tips. One touch passes and taking the puck to the net are critical for success.

B200 Overspeed with a Pass - U18 F and U17

It is important to do some overspeed training where players skate and do all the skills at a top speed.

Key Points:
Go as fast as you can or faster. If no players fall down it means they aren't pushing the envelope. If they all fall down then they aren't good skaters.

Description:
Players wait outside the neutral zone against the boards.

On the whistle two players from each line carry the puck doing moves for 8" and on the next whistle skate hard to take a shot on net. Stress that they shoot while skating at top speed like Ovechkin.

While the first group leaves the second group skates with a puck in the middle.

Follow the shot, look for rebounds.

You could add a give and go with the group ahead and a one timer or other situation at full speed.
Whistle every 8 seconds.

E1 - Two Shot Shootout - Czech Youth

Key Points:
Players should come in and make a hard move and shoot. The general rule on a breakaway is if the goalie is out far deke and if he backs in shoot.

Description:
1. Teams lines up across from each other and the pucks are in the middle circle.

2. One player from each team leaves and shoot at opposite ends.

3. The same players turn back and get another puck from the middle and shoot at the other end.

4. Continue until all the players have shot and keep score.

- You can also decide the winner by saying the most goals in a certain time or the first team to 10 or another total wins.

- Players that score no goals do 2 laps, those who score one goal skate one lap and those who score on both shots zero laps.

By: TomM

Content:

C3 - 15 Goal 3-0 3-1, 3-2 - U18 F

Key Points:
Forwards create 2-1 situations with close support and speed. One player always hard to the net on a middle drive on a shooting play and a wide drive if they are open. Headman the puck and move through the neutral zone quickly and make the first pass in the offensive zone early.

Defenders must talk and identify coverage. Protect the middle of the ice and only play the puck carrier if he is vulnerable. Give the shot from the outside. Jam the trailer with legs in the shooting lane and stick in the passing lane. It is critical to have tight gaps and not just back in.

Description:
Players are lined up along the boards in the C3 formation. Have 2 colours of jerseys and play one team vs the other if you have enough players. You can have D on one side and F on the other or they can wait on the side they will be playing.

1. Three forwards take a puck and attack 3-0. The attack is over when the puck is over the goal line. (unless the coach wants a cycle and a shot).

2. Use the same puck and go the other way attacking 3-1 vs a D from the other colour. (coach puts in a new puck if there is a goal).

3. Attack 3-2 in the original direction.

4. Three F from the other coloured team attack 3-0 on the vacant end.

5. Repeat sequence.

6. Coach time how long it takes to score 15 goals. (or how many goals in a certain time)

7. F can score on rebounds above the goal line .

8. Keep a record of the time it takes.

9. Next time if it takes longer the G and D win.

10. Next time if it takes less time to score 15 the F win.

An idea for coaches is to make a drill page by pasting the text and then the diagram on a word processor and printing it up. Make a pdf for everyone and it is even better. I will attack an example.

Content:

DT400 - 2-2 Defenders Get Support - College W

Key Points:
This transition game works on all 4 playing roles. It is a great way to teach the nzone regroup if the players regroup with the coach. Progress to regrouping with the players who follow the play into the zone. Insist on facing the puck, giving a target and making the breakout easy for the defenders. In the zone you can focus on the attack or defending principals. This is a great game when you only have one goalie. If two goalies they can alternate defending.

Description:
The players can be lined up in the order they go or better in the C3 formation with one team on each side behind the blueline.

1. 2/3 ice game of Attack-Defend-Breakout.
2. Attack 1-1, 2-2, 3-3 or in an odd number situation.
3. Player in line follow the play and give passive support above the circles to the defending team.
4. Attackers try to score and defenders defend. On a goal or after a breakout is made to the supporting players they go in the other direction.
5. Original players backcheck through the nzone and prepare to defend.
6. Regroup with one or two coaches and give good support filling each lane.
7. Coach pass to the regrouping players who now attack the original end vs the original attacking players. The original defenders go back to the lineup.

Options:
-regroup a second time.
-to practice the forecheck dump the puck in.
-next supporting players take the regroup pass instead of the coaches and pass to the other team and then follow the play.
-practice the full ice breakout by dumping the puck in instead of passing to the coach or players.
-odd man situations.

Content:

DT100 - 2 on 2 with Regroup

Key Points:
Move through the neutral zone quickly and create a 2 on 1. Defenders talk to identify coverage.
Line up in D100 Formation along the boards behind the bluelines at each end. Continuous flow game. Keep score. Vary the situations 1-1 to 3-3.

This is a great transition game to work on all four game playing roles in all three zones. You can focus on the offense, the defense, the regroup, boxing out, cycling, tying up sticks, creating offensive 2 on 1's, defensive communication etc. etc. All players attack and defend. The jokers support and must pass or shoot within a second and can't walk in. When the puck crosses the blueline they follow the play for a regroup pass and then into the attacking zone.

Description:
1. Full ice attack 1 Offense vs 1 Defenders.

2. Offensive players 2 follow the play and are jokers who can't skate in but must pass or shoot within 1 second. Defenders only cover the original attackers and tie up their sticks and box out.

3. After a goal or a breakout the defenders 1 attack the jokers.

4. Create an offensive 2-1 on a wide defender. If coach blows the whistle regroup with 3 who follow the play thru the nzone.

5. 1 finish the attack and try to score while 3 follow the play and support.

*Coach can change the situation from 1-1, 1-2, 2-1, 3-2, 3-3 or add a dump in to work on the forecheck or rules like goals must come from plays below the goal line to work on the cycle or low coverage.

ABC - Level Zero - 4 Practices

I have attached a pdf file with 4 practices using the ABC method of drills and games. It doesn't matter what age a person starts hockey. They have to learn to balance and move on the ice. At the same time they learn to skate they must learn how to PLAY the game.

It is a GAME we are teaching and not a series of drills. So the drills always have to lead to the purpose of "Learning how to PLAY the a GAME."

So the two themes of the method are:

" ENJOY THE GAME"

and

"THE GAME IS THE GREATEST COACH"

I will post 6 practices tomorrow that continue with skating and introduce puck handling, shooting and passing.

There are video clips of all these activities in the first section of this link.

ABC - Level One - Six Practices

These six practices are a progression from level 0 to level 1. Focus is on skating and learning to shoot. These two skills are used in drills and games.

An example is in the video clip where Dany Heatley (#17 in red and white) is playing a full ice game with passing rules. He had just got drafted and was still in college. He attended many of my summer camps and skated with various Korean teams that I used to train in the summer time. (he was always looking for free icetime.)

Many players who went on the the NHL, won ROY, Hobey Baker have practiced with me. So using games in practice is OK. The players don't need to stand in straight lines and only move 7-12 minutes per hour like study after study shows what happens in drill focused practices.

By: TomM

Content:

This is a very popular drill especially at the higher levels using he C600 formation with the players lined up against the boards behind the blue lines. You get full ice situations. Use this drill and then create transition games with the same situations so the plays are finished by fighting for rebounds and making breakout passes.
The first pass is made by F1 and not F3 as the diagram states.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

C600 - 1 on 1 to a 3 on 2 - Major Jr

Key points:
Defense must move their feet and close the gap in the neutral zone. The forwards must attack with speed.

Description:
1. F1 skate between the dots with a puck.
2. F1 pass to D2 and mirror the puck for a return pass.
3. D2 skate hard sideway or make a tight turn and pass to F1.
4. F1 attack and try to score vs D1.
5. F2 start the same drill passing to D3.
6. D3 drive skate and pass to F2.
7. F2 attack 1-1 vs D2. - Repeat in alternate directions.

Variations:
- Add a regroup.
- Add players for situations, 2-1, 1-2, 2-2, 2-3, 3-2.

3. Wing skate to the big ice between the dots and pass to the far wing then follow the pass.
4. Wide wing skate to the big ice and pass to the original centre who is now in the opposite wide lane.
5. The D is skating backwards thru the middle zone and the puck is passed back to him for a regroup the other direction.
6. On regroup one player supports on the strong side boards, one mirrors the puck in the middle lane and one is in the wide lane.
7. D makes the pass and follow the attack into the zone.
8. The group at the other end leaves after the D passes up ice.

Options.
a. Add another D.
b. Add a second regroup.

C1 - Loose Puck Battles - Wally U18 F

Key Points:
-Players should protect themselves while going into the corners. Don't skate straight in toward the boards.
-Contact each other before getting the puck to gain position.
-Protect the puck with the body and use quick strides to escape.
-Attack with a good move and defend with tight gaps.

Description;
Players are lined up across the red line and the coach or coaches in the middle with pucks. One team to each side of the coach.

1. The coach dumps the puck into the corner and the first player on each line races to get the puck, then the coach dumps a puck into the other corner and the next players race to the puck.
2. Whichever player wins the battle in the corner skates out over the blueline and thru the middle circle then attacks the original end while the other player defends. This happens at both ends of the ice.
3. As soon as the rush is over another puck is dumped into the corner.
4. Situations like 2-1, 2-2, 3-2, 3-3 can also be used.

T3 - Playing a Defensive 2-1

Content:

T3 - Playing a Defensive 2-1

Key Points:
- A 2-1 is really a 2-2 because it is between the two attackers one defender and one goalie. (goalies are people too)
- The defender has to realize that he/she doesn't have to get the puck or make a check but instead recognize the most dangerous play and take that play away.
- Goalie should be saying he has the shooter.

Description:
1. Defender stay in the middle a little ahead of the attack with the stick in the passing lane.
2. Initiate the decision.
3. Move toward the puck carrier a faking you are going there to see if it make him rush and see if he drops his head and throws the puck across (many players panic and do this) then drop back into the middle and block the pass.
4. Deny the pass across and the goalie takes the shooter if he is outside. If the stick is in the inside lane the shooter may be the most dangerous player and you have to play him more.
5. Don't allow the puck carrier to go in alone; cut the ice in half.
6. Take non shooters stick on a shot.
7. Slide to deny the pass if the attackers are parallel.

A200 - Puck Handling Circuit - Finland

Key Points:
Protect the puck with the body. Develop big moves all around the body and thru the legs to shield the puck. Learn to pivot and make quick turns and backward escapes.

Description:1. Zig-zag forward and backward with the puck.
2. Protect the puck skating #8's.
3. a. Skate along line and reach around pylons.
b. Skate around pylons keeping puck on the line.
4. Figure 8's around gloves to the front and sides.
5. Weave through pylons.
6. 1 on 1 game. Go around pylon to become the attacker.
7. Partners work inside the circle and protect the puck from each other for 10”.

A3 Puck Handling Moves With a Shot

Key Points:
Do various moves with the puck and finish with a shot.

Description:
One group rotate clockwise and the other counter clockwise.
1. Do various skating moves with the puck.
2. Big moves all around the body, in the skates, through the legs etc.

* You can also add quick burst while protecting the puck thru pylons and finishing with a shot.
There are many video's on this site for puck handling. I think the most important routine is the Russian Big Moves Warm up. Do this on and off the ice, add moves you see top players do. If a player does this routine a lot before he/she reaches puberty they will be able to control the puck all around the body.

T4 - Cougar Pounce Forecheck

Content:

T4 - Cougar Pounce Forecheck

Key Points:
Constant pressure from the defensive side. Back pressure, Offensive and defensive 2-1's. Man on box behind in Dzone. 2-2-1 forecheck when close pressure or 1-3-1 when offense has total control with skates up ice.

Description:
This system combines the left wing lock and the torpedo. There are two offensive forwards the C and RW. The left wing plays like a left wing in the offensive end and a left D in the defensive zone and lines up on lw at the faceoff. The LW and RD stay on their side of the ice. The right D plays like a RW in the offensive zone and a RD in our end. The LD is really a middle D and is on the puck side in the offensive end and is the support player low in the defensive zone, always on the puck side. The RW and C cover the points in the D zone and force the puck on the attack. They can forecheck either in a 2-2-1 or a 1-3-1 formation. There are always 4 players on the attack.

I used a large rink on the floor to go over the system and my trainer took a video of the instruction. The video was taken early in the season before an exhibition game in the Olympic Oval. The videos are in the team play section of the ABC site.

This video shows a clip of the forecheck in a game sitution.
http://hockeycoachingabcs.com/mediagallery/media.php?f=0&sort=0&s=20080727110408764

This is the system we used when I coached the Women's Varsity Team at college for five seasons. I left to coach with the Red Bulls in Austria as the all time winning percentage leader of 71% and all time wins at that time. So it is an effective system. I joined the Red Bulls and found that Pierre Page was using almost the identical system with the pro team there.

A300 Toe Drag and Finish with a Shot - College W

Key Points:

Keep your hands away from the body. Roll the wrists especially with the top hand and slide the bottom hand up the stick. Give a hard fake to the inside to lure the defender then pull the puck across while you slide away and around him.

My assistant coach at SAIT had really good hands and used to practice the toe drag around the dots. Instead of having pylons, use the ice markings and do all kinds of moves and skating exercises at each dot, i.e. Crosby's, or fake shot etc.

Description:
1. Pull the puck around the dots and then shoot. Slide backward as you pull the puck into your skates; then accelerate forward.
2. Shoot on the net with a toe drag and release.
3. Repeat but with a back toe drag.
4. Change directions.
