Daily Drills Part 10 - International

D4 Two Pass - Czech Republic U20

D4 Two Pass - Slovakia U20

One consistent thing I see when watching the international teams practice at the IIHF World Junior Championships is that they play a game in each zone at almost every practice. Sometimes the coach organizes it as part of practice or the players start the game themselves when practice is over. The North American players will stay on and shoot the puck or practice skills but the European players organize games.

Two Pass
The rule is the puck can't come out of the zone or the other team gets it. When you regain the puck you must make two passes before you can shoot. Sometimes only one pass is needed or various skills can be added. This is the Slovakian U20 Team.

A6 Puck Handling Eight Exercises - U18 F

Content:

A6 Puck Handling Eight Exercises U18 F

Key Points:Players need to be able to handle the puck on both sides of their body and this requires loose shoulders. When you carry the puck with only one side of the blade you must skate around the puck and be able to rotate your core. Skating with fast hands and fast feet requires good cross over skills and loosens the shoulders. This is an exercise I learned from Jursinov the IIHF Hall of Fame Russian coach.

Separate the movement of the upper and lower body, loosen the shoulders and learn to control the puck all around the body. You must get your top hand elbow up and bottom hand moves up and down the shaft.

Description:Leave from diagonal corners and do two circles in each zone in opposite directions. Exercises include: carry the puck only using the forehand side of the blade, only the back hand side of the blade, fast hands and fast feet, alternate facing inside and outside.

Many other tasks such as backward skating are possible.

Finish with a shot on net.

D6 Variation One
- One net on the goal line lined up with the other net on the far blue line.

D6 Variation Two
- One net in the goal crease at one end and the other net lined up with the face-off dot at the far blue line.
-This variation allows for play in the entire zone.
- In this variation the scoring team gets the puck and goes the other way and the team scored on must touch the blue line before defending. Use either Variation A or Variation B or you could combine them. Variation B gives a full zone to attack and defend in at each end.

By dividing the ice down the middle you have the option of doing games and drills full ice, in one zone, 2-3-4 games at once or games and drills at the same time.

Content:

B6 Jursi Skate-Pass-Shoot - U18 F

2. A is on the inside and continues on with a shot while skating.
3. B pivots facing the puck and continues the other direction passing to C.

# This can be done in tandem on both sides of the ice.

I like to use it for good habits like passing while moving, giving a target, attacking quickly. The video has the 1-0 and 2-0. You need about 20 skaters to do the 3-0 because it there isn't very much waiting in line. I picked this up from American coach Gene Reilly when I was coaching for the Red Bulls.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

B6 1-0, 2-0, 3-0 Small Horseshoe - U18 F – MRU M – SAIT M

D1 Shinny – Russian U20

I was going from rink to rink in the 4 rink complex at Canada Olympic Park. Every rink had a different team practicing. Sometime I was with other coaches and sometimes alone. The audio often has me trying to figure out what the team is doing in the drill or game. In this game it looked like three groups rotating at the start but after a while I realized they were playing Shinny with no rules or if they had any skill rules I couldn't tell. I often have my teams or skill groups play but most of the time have rules like one touch in each zone or 2" with the puck only or a stickhandling game like - you can't pass until you cross a blue line and if you get a pass in the offensive zone you can't pass but must try to score.
So anyway the Russians were playing shinny and they seemed to do this as a cooldown activity and usually ended with a shootout.

--------------------------------------------------
Key Points:
Everyone plays at once. No offsides and no rules accept good sportsmanship. Great for developing puck handling skills and recovery after a hard practice.

Description:
This is the Russian U20 team playing shinny at the end of two practices. Everyone plays including the coaches and the extra goalie. They played shinny at every practice. The players enjoyed the games and it was a very different atmosphere than the North American practices which were so military with whistles all of the time, coaches barking and making many passes in command style, coach centred sessions.

Hockey seemed like a Game at the Russian and other European practices and a Job at North American sessions.

G. B1 and B2 do the same sequence from the diagonal blue line.
H. Repeat the other direction with B4 and B5 passing to R6.

*Follow shots for a rebound and then screen or circle back to rebound for the next shooter.

ABC Coding System Explained

ABC Coding System Explained

All of the drills and game practice PDF's are organized with the ABC coding system along with an explanation of the codes. I update the folder with the new material:

Juhani Wahlsten designed the coding system so it is easy to find drills and games because they are classified according to what kind of skill, where the players stand on the ice and whether it is an individual, partner, team play, game, transition game, goalie activity etc. Otherwise a coach has all kinds of drills on sheets of paper that he has to look through all of the time to find something. All of the diagrams use International Symbols which give consistency and coaches from around the world can understand the diagram whatever language they speak.

D4 - Two Pass – Swiss U20

Key Points:
My favorite game to warm-up the players at the start of practice. The quicker they make the passes after regaining the puck the more scoring chances they produce. This video shows the Swiss U20 Team playing 2 Pass as a warm-up.

Description:
1. Players must stay inside the blueline and if they puck goes out the other team gets it.
2. Before scoring the offensive team must make at least two passes.
3. When the defenders regain the puck they must make at least two passes before a shot.
4. Make rules with skills for skating, shooting, passing or good habits. So the game is a template to either use as itself or modify rules to cause the players to do skills or moves within a game situation.

* I add skill rules such as one touch passing, goals on one timers, only back hand passes, only forehand passes, goals must result from plays below the goal line, maximum two seconds with the puck, maximum one second with the puck, goals must result from plays from the point, you must make an escape move before passing, etc. Whatever you want the players to work on within a game situation can be the rule modification for 2 pass.

F - Spin Class on Exercise Bikes – U18 Girl’s – Player Led

Key Points:
Work the various aerobic and anaerobic energy systems and pay attention to the work/rest ratio.
There was confusion on the date of the Spin Class and no instructor was there. The players took control and instead of going home they warmed up with a few laps around the track, did core exercises with each player leading one and then Kiera, an assistant captain took the leader bike, mike and music and led a 30 minute spin session.

Description:
Players take turns sprinting on the bikes. They are in groups and play Rock – Paper – Scissors to choose which group goes next.

C3 - 1 on 1 From Blue Line and Corner – Sw

The Swedish Ice Hockey Association has a website with great drills and games. I am going through them and doing diagrams of the drills. Coaches can go to the link for the site to watch them. They are very well done. A lot better than I can do with my camera. The videos have more than one drill but I am sure the coaches that come here are smart enough to figure that out.[/i]
---------------------------------------------------
Key Points:
On offense protect the puck, shoot while skating and follow the shot for a rebound. On defense play from the net side with the stick on the puck. Stay with the attacker and control the stick after the shot and then look for the puck.

Description:
1. Attacker and defender leave from the blue line and the passer is on the other side of the ice above the dot.
2. Attacker skate into the slot for a pass and the defender skate backward.
3. First pass is in the slot and battle to score and defend.
4. Second pass happens when the first battle is over and the puck is shot into the far corner.
5. Attacker protect the puck vs. defender and battle to get to the net and score.

C500 - 1-1 in Front and Support at Point and Behind - Sweden

Key Points:
The most dangerous attacker is in front of the net. Play 2-1 but really a 2-2 as the goalie takes the shooter and defender denies the pass. Seal the stick to the outside on the shot and tie up the stick and then look for the rebound after the shot.

Description:
1. Coach has the pucks and passes to either the point or behind the net.
2. Players at point and behind can only shoot or pass.
3. Defender deny pass to the player in front and rebound goals.

E1 - A6 - Shootout – Russian U20

Key Points:
Goalie play it like a regular shootout and leave from the goal line to get used to coming out and then timing the skating back with the shooters speed. Shooter make the goalie move and ‘shoot where he is coming from and not where he is going.’ Remember that under the crossbar is always a good shot; as Glen Hall said, “there is no one up there.”

Description:
Shootout competition.

The pucks are in the middle and each player gets one shot vs. each goalie with the team that scores the most goals the winner. Players leave from diagonal corners.

In this video of the Russians the losing team had to walk on their knees from the blue to the red line.

Description:
1. Blue F1 and F2 attack vs. Red D1 from the corner.
2. Red F1 and F2 wait at the blue line and attack vs. Blue D1 with a new puck on the coaches whistle.
3. Red D1 join the attack and Blue F1 and F2 back check.
4. Play 3 on 3 with Red attacking and Blue defending.

*This drill could progress to a one puck transition game by having Red D1 pass to the red forwards who could give passive support from the high slot. It could continue with 2 new attackers and one defender supporting after each rush.

Key Points:
Pass hard and screen the goalie. On the 2-1 the first pass should be made near the blue line to force the defender to make a decision and allow a second play. Defender stay in the middle and decide who the most dangerous attacker is. Deny a breakaway and pass across remembering it is a 2-2 with the goalie.

Description:
1. F1 give and go with D1 then walk in and shoot.
2. F2 pass to D1 at the point who drags to the slot and shoots while F1 screens the goalie.
3. F2 pass to D1 who taps puck to F1 and then F1 and F2 attack 2-1 vs. D1.

Observations of International Hockey

Observations of International Hockey

I am working with younger players this spring; so I am going to focus on the individual skills from the Swedish site to see if there are any new ideas there from our Scandanavian friends. The Swedes have great individual technique.

I took my college women's team to Stockholm and played some games about 5 years ago. Verner Persson, Kjell Larsen, Hans Lindberg were three of the coaches who George Kingston brought here to give two week coaching courses in the 80;s. They were all very good. When I was at the World Youth conference in Heidelberg, Germany two years ago the Swedes had a bus load of over 50 youth coaches in attendance. They really focused on improving the coaching for youth hockey.

Three springs ago the Swedish Women's Olympic Team came here to train. I watched a lot of their practices and since I know a few of the coaches I invited the staff to my house and we had a barbecue before they left for some exhibition games. There were two Swedish coaches on the Red Bull staff when I was working with them in Salzburg, Austria the 08-09 season.

So I have had quite a lot of exposure to the Swedish view of how to coach and how to play the game and have always been impressed by how thoroughly they prepare.

The Swedes, Finns, Czechs and other hockey countries have to be very good at developing players. Canada and the USA have over a half million players each. We can afford to waste players and have poor development programs because of the power of numbers. Erkka Westerlund, who was the head of Finnish Hockey, told me, 'we don't have that many players, so we can't cut a player at 12 because he is small, we have to develop everyone and give them good technique.

When I was in the Czech Republic two years ago Slavamir Lener, the head of their hockey, told me that when it was Czechoslovakia they had 82 000 players and now the two countries combined have only 32 000 players. I was offered a coaching position in Jihlava last season to be the assistant to the only english speaking coach of the U20 team (former NHL player) and coach mentor for the other coaches in the club. (they liked what I did at the hockey school and mentoring the U20 coach). They didn't get the grant from the city to pay the contract; so it didn't happen.

So it is very worthwhile to pay attention to what the other countries are doing to develop players. By the numbers they shouldn't be able to compete with Canada and the USA but last year the Finns won the IIHF worlds and the Swedes won the World U20.
They are having a coaching symposium in Stockholm during the IIHF World's but it looks like it is directed at Swedish coaches. It is posted on the same website as the drills.

Key Points:
Attacker skate fake outside to draw the defender then cut across inside. Attacker recognize that defender has given up the blue line and force him to skate laterally by moving back and across to create space.

Description:
1. Attacker leave from the red line with a coach or another player backing up to the top of the circles.
2. Attacker fake skating to the outside.
3. Attacker see the defender lean outside and then quickly skate inside and back and then laterally to the middle.
4. Gretzky would skate across the midline and pump fake once and then shoot as the goalie moved across.

Key Points:
Players should skate and make moves at full speed. If they fall sometimes that shows they are pushing themselves beyond their comfort zone, which is great. Always follow the shot for a rebound.

Description:
1. Players are lined up along the boards with one colour on each side of the red line with a net at each blue line.
2. On whistle the players skate with the puck in the neutral zone.
3. Overspeed tempo with moves and turns at a faster pace than the players usually go.
4. Shoot on one net each on the next whistle.
5. Whistle about every 7”.

Description:
1. Puck carriers in the corner and at the red line with defenders about 8 m. away.
2. Defender skate straight at the puck carrier.
3. Puck-carrier waggle with a strong fake to make the checker commit to one way.
4. Puck-carrier go hard to the net and the defender backcheck.
5. Battle for a rebound.
6. Alternate starting from the corner and then the red line.
7. Larger groups could have players in both corners and both sides at the red line.

A500 - Waggle - Fake Go Outside – Build a Wall - Sw

Key Points:
The defender will always protect the middle so the attacker skate inside and when the defender adjusts inside then Waggle by accelerating outside and go wide. Once the attacker is past the defenders shoulder then build a wall and cut in.

Description:
1. Attacker leave from the red line vs. a coach or a passive defender near the top of the circle.

2. Attacker Waggle inside and when defender adjusts inside go outside, build a wall with the body and shoot.

3. The key is to force the defender to make lateral adjustments and not simply skate back in a straight line on the defensive side.

4. Circle back and rebound for the next shooter.

*If the defender turns while adjusting back outside it is possible to go to the middle.

A500 - Tight Turn 8's - SW

Key Points:
Tight turn with knees bent and inside leg in front. On the forehand turn do as the goalie in the video and keep the top hand at the side and elbow back. Don’t cross your hands as you cannot shoot or pass right away (new thought being taught now).

Description:
1. Carry a puck while doing these tasks and alternate turns with a partner.
2. Do two figure eights starting to the right with turns about 8 m. apart – switch.
3. Do two figure eights starting to the left – switch.
4. Repeat facing forward all of the time.
5. Repeat using a heel to heel turn (Crosby, Selanne)
6. Repeat skating backward. Also carry only on the forehand, then only backhand.

*Avoid using pylons as repeating in the same spot ruins the ice. Players can figure out how to do a number 8 as they all go to school. There are enough lines and dots on the ice to use as guidelines without the pylons (after players are 100 lbs. or 45 kg.)

A - Skating Technique Video Demonstrations - Finland and Minnesota:

Skating is and always will be the most important foundational skill. I remember coaching a player at university who scored 81Goals - 81Assists his last season in major junior (I think he still has the pp goals record for major junior) and he wasn’t even invited to one NHL camp because they didn’t think he skated well enough and he was on the small side. So you might have all the other skills and great game intelligence but the first thing you need is to be a great skater.

Both of these videos really focus on technique.

Skating technique demo. Kai. The slides are in Finnish but anyone can understand the demo’s of good technique by the Finnish coach. Kai mentions he has an English translation but I can’t find it on the site. Maybe you can submit it Kai.

Content:

DT5 - Nets Back to Back with Jokers - U18 F

Key Points:
Jokers can only have the puck 1 second and then must pass or shoot. You can add that
they must move sideways or back when they get the puck.

Description:
Place the nets back to back at the red line.
-Half the team play and half are jokers. Shifts 30"- 60”.
-When the team gets the puck on defense they must pass to a joker before they can
score. Jokers can move around on the perimeter.

If you have only one goalie then it is a great conditioning - skating drill for the goalie to
play for both teams and skate around to the other goal.

Another option is to put the nets side by side facing opposite directions.

This an example of using cross ice stations.

Here is another example of how to get a lot of skill reps with minimal standing in line. You can move the groups across from each other instead of lengthwise.

The point is to create situations where players do many skill reps an minimal waiting.

O - Off ice Training on Ground and Fence - College M

This was a camp for college aged players I helped Curtis Brackenbury with in the USA. Lots of partner work using elastics and plyo's standing on a fence. A lot more exercises were done on hills and with a slide board.

A - Ball Drop Quick Start - U18 F

One partner drop a tennis ball while the other waits in the ready position 3-5 metres away. The goal is for the waiting partner to catch the ball before it hits the ice a second time. Keep score, change distances, etc.

T3 - Defending a 1-1 - Terry Johnson

TJ played in the NHL with Quebec, St. Louis, Calgary and Toronto as a defensive defenseman. I coached at the U of Calgary with T.J. and we have done many camps and teams together. A few years agoI asked him to go over defensive situations with my girl's U18 team.

This is a very good lesson on playing a defensive 1 on 1.

A300 Big Moves _ Russian Warm-up

Key Points:
This warm up helps a player to control the puck all around the body and stresses the nervous system to adapt to being overloaded with multiple balls and pucks with varying weights and feel. After practicing like this one puck seems easy to handle.
The demonstator is a 97 born female player. Worked with her for five years. She played NCAA Div. 1 and won two National Championships and now plays pro in Europe.

Increase the size of the moves by reaching as far as possible with the puck. Separate the movement of the upper and lower body by skating away from the puck. Players must be able to handle the puck under control around and through their body.

Description:
- Skate away from the puck. Skate right reach left and skate left and reach right.
- Reach as far forward and back as you can using the top hand.
- Yo-yo the puck give it and take it away.
- Toe drag fake inside and pull the puck back while sliding back.
- Bring the puck from behind to in front through the skates on forehand.
- Bring the puck from behind to in front through the skates on backhand.
- Skate fake inside and go outside.

Nervous System Overload
- Carry two pucks at once; keep them in front and within a stick length.
- Carry three pucks at once.
- Carry four pucks at once.
- Carry one wiffle ball and three pucks to change the feel and weight.
- Carry a wiffle ball and sponge puck at once.
- Carry wiffle ball, sponge puck and racquet ball at the same time.
- Carry a small soccer ball with the feet.
- Handle a small soccer ball with the feet and a puck with the stick.

A300 Stickhandle Proprioceptive Overload – Pro
This idea came from Verner Persson of Sweden . Overload the nervous system by handling many pucks, different kinds or balls and combine them so the feel for each one is different and the player has to adapt.

A200 Variable Goal Training - Skating and Puckhandling - U18 F

Key Points:
Simulate a defender by using small nets as obstacles. The player skates around and carries the puck using various moves and fakes. Any move can be practiced and the nets are a much larger obstacle than pylons. Focus on good technique.

Description:
1. Put 4 nets as obstacles down the length of the ice.
2. Player does various skating and puck handling exercises and finish with a shot. Start slowly focusing on technique and then add speed and different skills around each net.
3. The video example shows.

A. Cross over skating and weave through the nets without a puck.
B. Cross over skate and weave through the nets with a puck as quietly as possible.
C. Heel to heel pivot past the nets alternating sides with a puck.
D. Yo-yo the puck into the net and out practicing the toe drag.
E. Fake shot and tight turn each way (without crossing the hands on forehand.)

C3 1-1 to 2-2 - D Join F Backcheck-Pro

Key Points:
D join the attack on the whistle and attacking forwards back check. It is a fight for inside position. No penalties. Important that the forwards touch the red line so F1-D1 are close enough to join the play.

Description:
1. Blue D1 pass to Red F1 who skates to the red line and turns back attacking 1-1 vs. D1.
2. On the whistle Red D2 passes to Blue F2 at the other end of the rink.
3. Blue F2 skates to the red line and turns back attacking 1-1 vs Red D2. while Red D1 Joins Red F1 on the attack and White F1 backchecks making it a 2-2.
4. Repeat with Blue D3 passing to Red F3 at original end.

*Situations up to a 3-2 can be practiced. You need at least 8 D and 12 F to practice 3-2 with a 5-5 at each end. With larger number the lineup needs to move into the neutral zone to leave inside the blueline free.
