Practice Plans - Season 2019-20

I didn't do this last season as I was and assistant coach for college men and then remained in that position but also took over the college women's team. I am head coach of that team for this season.

I will post pdf's of the practice plans. My assistant coaches run part of each practice and I don't have their drills. We just started with three optional ice times last week where about 60% of the team was in town and had our first official practice September 3 with the whole team.

At present we have 2 G, 13 F, 8 D and practice three times this week and have one game on Friday and two games Saturday in Red Deer.

Here are two of the optional ice times.

I send the practice plans to the team and coaches each day.

Practice One and Two

We started with a team meeting where everyone introduced themselves, I told them about what kind of team we would practice to be and we went over some of the things we need to get done right away.

The goal is for everyone to get a feel for their skates and the puck plus work on individual offensive skills and lots of game situations.

Practice Two is designed so I can run it myself as Mike who always can come has to go to meetings with the big boss of Canada who comes once a year. Jim said he would try to get there but an alleged criminal needed a lawyer and he couldn't leave. It is 4:30 practice and Kailey and Melissa are at work.

The practice went well. We did Wally's breakout sequence up to 2-0 with the goalies passing and one timers at the far end. I introduced the Four Chamber Attack which is used in the NHL and all higher levels of hockey now instead of the traditional offensive triangle. We played games with good habits and skills such as goals only count on one touch shots.

Practice Three - 09-05-19

We are in a tournament this weekend where we play 3 games in 22 hours. I decided to do a lot of team play since our first two sessions had a lot of skating. It is good to introduce things and let them sink in. We met at 5:15 and I used my big 3D magnetic board to go over the forecheck, dzone, pk, pp. About two weeks of practice in 90' We are playing on international sized ice and two of my players are on the golf team and will miss the first two games, two are injured and another has a bad shoulder and can only play one or two of the three games. So I need to play a style that is aggressive but can be played effectively with only 3 lines. We played this style when I was with Pierre Page with the Salzburg Red Bulls It is a 2-2-1.

I also wanted to introduce the low 1-3-1 and 2-1-2 Spread Power Plays. So probably way more teaching than can be absorbed but it is a template for the early season.

This is a different team a few seasons ago and another forecheck but it is the same magnetice board which is a great coaching tool.

Played in a tournament after only three practices. Three games in 22 hours. It gave me a chance to watch our ten new players.

We have 3 returning players out with injury including last years MVP who hurt her knee water skiing and another got hurt second period of the first game. We also have two veterans on the college golf team and they missed the first two games in a golf tournament, then drove almost three hours to make the last game. So played without 3 of our top 5 players.

We played with 9 forwards and 5 D. Ten played their first college games. We had five good periods and four weak periods. We ran out of gas the third period of games two and three. No wins but lots of good things happened. Other teams had structure and full lineups. We will be ok after about ten practices to establish our systems and good playing habits and improve team fitness.

We don't play our first league game until mid October, so we need to use our time wisely.

I have the coaching staff and players to do it.

Practice Sept -18

We prepared for 3 home exhibition games this weekend. Thursday vs. U of Calgary, Friday vs. Olds College, Saturday vs. U of Lethbridge.

We have two of our top forwards injured and will miss three players on Saturday with two captains on the gold team and one playing soccer and the coach would like another which would leave us with 13 skaters. We have to see how many healthy players we have after the first two games.

Team ended the three games 1-1-1 and played well 8 of the 9 periods. We worked really hard and our team play was good. We need a lot of work on passing; both the pass and the puck support. Overall I was pleased with where we are with a month of practice before our first league game Oct. 18.

Our practice focused on passing skills and puck support for an hour and then we did spin for 45'. One player was cut to finalize our roster.
