These are the drills and games we used in practices this week. We have no games on the weekend so the focus was on individual offensive and defensive skills. I didn't do the pdf each day as I was picking up my grand kids after school. -28 C with a wind chill of -40 is a little cold to walk home from school. I was really proud of my players. They all made it to the three practices even though there was a blizzard at the start of the week and travel warning about staying off the roads. I will also attach the Nov. 29 practice.

so that forwards can play the point on pplays and be comfortable while covering the point.

staying at that dot for a one timer when the puck goes to the original point. All 3 forwards
collapse and look for a rebound after the shot.

6 min.
Shoot 5 shots each from the top of the circle to warm up goalies.

6 min.
B2 Transition Skate Shooting

Key Points:

Keep 2 hands on the stick and keep the feet moving. Hit the net.

Description:

B2 Transition Skate Shooting

1. Lineup on blue lines.
2. Skate to top of circle, back to blue, top of circle and shoot.
3. Next player leave when the first is going backward.

(got this drill coaching withTim Bothwell at the U of Calgary)

http://www.hockeycoachingabcs.com/mediagallery/media.php?s=20120418155124444

5 min.
B6 Shoot from Three Lanes

Key Points:

Shoot with the feet moving, don't overhandle the puck and carry it in the triple threat position, follow the shot, rebound for the next shooter. On sequence two accelerate after taking the pass. Insist that they get the habit of following the shot for a rebound. Many players peel off toward the corner after shooting.

Description:

Players can all be in one corner or in both. After shooting switch corners.

Sequence One
A - Carry the puck and shoot.
B - Follow the shot for a rebound.
C - Circle back and rebound for the next shooter.

Sequence Two
A - Skate and get a pass from the opposite corner.
B - Accelerate and shoot while moving.
C - Follow the shot for a rebound.
D - Rebound for the next shooter.

6 min.
B5 2-0 Shot - Rebound – Shot

Key Points:

Shoot while skating and aim at the far pad. It is really a shot pass off the goalies pad when the shooter sees he has no openings and #2 is going hard to the net.

Description:

1. Start in the B5 formation with the players inside the middle circle.
2. Each #1 leave to the wide lane and get a pass from #2.
3. #1 Skate wide and shoot from outside the circle and shoot low to the far pad to create a rebound.
4. #2 go hard to the far post and be ready to shoot in a rebound.
5. Repeat the other way with each #3 leaving and getting a pass from #4.

http://www.hockeycoachingabcs.com/mediagallery/media.php?f=0&sort=0&s=20121108160612789

5 min.
1-0 Shoot for the 5 Hole - Follow for a Rebound

Change the above to 1-0 and shoot from below the circle at the 5 hole and follow the shot for a rebound.

Low shots = a second play. High shots seldom produce a second play.

6 min.
B6 Jursi Skate-Pass-Shoot

Key Points:

This is a drill that Russian Olympic coach Vladimir Jursinov used when I was coaching with him in Austria. The goal is to get players to practice passing and shooting while they skate. Puck handling-passing-shooting should be seamless.

Description:

1. A and B skate down the ice in passing while skating.
2. A is on the inside and continues on with a shot while skating.
3. B pivots facing the puck and continues the other direction passing to C.
4. B shoots and C partners with D the other way.
# This can be done in tandem on both sides of the ice.

http://www.hockeycoachingabcs.com/mediagallery/media.php?f=0&sort=0&s=20120227085711281

8 min.
D100 Two 1 on 1 Games at Once

Key Points:

One coach should watch that the players won’t collide. It is important to look behind and for the player with the puck to skate away from oncoming players. This is a great game for 1-1 and conditioning.

1. Players line up along the boards one group on each side of the red stripe.
2. One player of each team leave every 15”.
3. Coach blow whistle each 15” and players play for 2 whistles (30”)
4. Pass to a teammate when the second whistle blows.
5. Only two pucks on the ice and get the puck out of the net after a goal.
6. After scoring touch the red line before defending.
7. Keep score.

http://www.hockeycoachingabcs.com/mediagallery/media.php?f=0&sort=0&s=20080719153346728

8 min.

Key Points:

Play a full ice game with the extra players on the bench. Change on the whistle or on their own.
Pass back to the goalie when changing on the whistle.

Description:

1. Play from 1-1 to 6-5.
2. Change of the whistle or players change on the go.
3. Keep score.
4. If no face-offs then scoring team touch the red line before checking.

Play a tournament of 8 minute games including the above game. Keep score.

8 min. 2 on 2.

8 min. 3 on 3.

8 min. 4 on 4.

D100 Full Ice Game - Various Situations

8 min. Last game 5 on 5 and players change on their own. (8 per team)
D100 Scrimmage with Extra Players on Bench

The 2013 part of the season has been very challenging. I thought we would have an offensive powerhouse this year but the top 3 forwards and top 2 defense who I thought were coming back went to sport schools. The conventional wisdom seems to be that if you spend a lot of money on tuition and hockey fees to a sports school (between 30-45 000) it translates into you being offered a scholarship to university. It isn't true as almost every graduating player from my first two seasons with the team is playing at a university or college. Two of my 96 born who are still with our team have already signed 'letters of intent' to CIS schools and another is talking to an eastern university. Last year we had two graduate Flyer defense playing in the CIS National Championship tournament.

But as the standard hockey saying goes, 'It is what it is."

So we were almost starting over when the season began with ten new players. My plan has been to help them get better at every skill and improve their fitness level. An the average week is: Monday - spin class on exercise bikes. Tuesday and Wednesday both are 90 minute on ice practices with lots of emphasis on skills and game sense. Thursday - off. Friday a 75 minute practice practice with about 30 minutes of skill at high tempo and 45 minutes of team play. Sat - Sunday games.

We have played 21 league games so far. The first 10 games we were 2-6-2 and the last 11 games we are 4-4-3. This weekend we played the top two teams in our division and tied 3-3 vs. the second place team and beat the top team 2-1.

I have tried to find a forecheck that fits this group of players. I don't have many high energy players who want to be on the puck and cause turn-overs and my D have scored only 1 goal. So really aggressive forechecks haven't worked. The 2-1-2 with F3 high and a strong side pinch when the D is sure and weak side pinch on a rim works for this group better than the aggressive forechecks we tried or the 1-2-2. I also changed the penalty kill to be more contain than pressure for the same reasons.

Take away a 7-7 tie and we only average 1.3 GF a game, so our margin of error is very small. Most of our games are 2-1, 1-2, 2-3, 3-2. This weekend we scored 5 goals and if we can keep this up we will do well. Our defensive play is good but of course it can get better.

I have basically rolled lines all season. You are only as strong as your weakest link and we have some players who have never played AAA before and the league is 96-97-98 born players. The ones with lots of potential are the 98 born and they have to get used to playing vs. players two years older than them. 4 of our 5 goals this weekend were scored by first year players. So they are coming on.

17 skaters is such a clumsy number to work into games. I don't know why HC has that number. 18 skaters like in the NHL and college gives you 4 lines and 3 sets of D. We have 10 F and 7 D. We now go with 3 lines and two wingers and a different centre double shifts each period to make 4 lines. That centre doesn't kill penalties when double shifting. I know we could have a few more wins and ties if I put on the best players as much as possible like the other teams in the league do but the most important thing is how good we are in the Mac's tournament which starts Dec. 26 and then the play-offs.

The players all come to every practice and fitness session (except when sick or injured) and I think it is important to reward them by allowing them to play and give them a reason to work at getting better. This philosophy isn't popular with all of the parents, especially some of the third year parents who have told me that in their opinion the 96 born should play more because they are in their last year and they have earned the right to more ice time, power play time, etc.

Maybe some people are 'entitled' but my view is that the whole team has to improve and be given opportunity. We do put on the players who are having a good game if we need a goal or need to hold a lead in the last few minutes and one player does get to double shift because of the 17 skaters but it is based on merit and right now two of the three C's who do this are first years.

The Mac's Tournament is really big in Calgary. The press supports it and lots of people come to every game. My captains are going to a press conference this week where they announce the teams. There is a boy's and girl's tournament going on at the same time. One of my Finnish friends is coaching the Finland U17 team that is playing on the boy's side. So the first 4 months has been to prepare for this tournament and the way we are playing now I think we have as good a chance as anyone. Three of our 4 wins in the last 11 games have been vs. the top team in the north and south divisions.

So the season has been a real challenge but it has been fun because this group of players wants to get better. They come to practice and work hard. A coach can't ask for more than that. I can see them improving all of the time and I hope they get rewarded with more W's and team success.

As far as coaching goes, we will keep working on skills and good habits until they become automatic.

We had two goalies on the Tuesday practice. I had Blair Yaworski who played at Yale and then minor pro up to the American league and in Europe come help me as my asst. was out of town. We did a lot of skill review especially on weight transfer with the pass and shot. The girl's tend to lift up instead of follow through on their shots and passes.

The Wednesday practice was on a day with a blizzard outside. White out conditions where the police didn't allow travel in some areas. We had 11 skaters and one goalie. The other goalie was there but has an injured wrist. Blair came again and we spent the first half of practice on the individual skills and then played 4 one goalie games.

They had a press conference to announce the groupings for the Mac's Midget Tournament that goes Dec. 26-Jan 1. We are in the toughest group with last years champions who we play the first day and another team that has won a few times. So I guess we will see how much we have improved.

One of my coaching friends Kalle Kaskinen is bringing the Finnish U17 team to play on the boy's side. Next year he will be assistant coach for the Helsinki team that is joining the KHL. Erkka Westerlund (who will coach the Finnish team in the Olympics) will be the head coach and former NHL D Hannu Virta will be the other assistant. They get here Dec. 22 so he will miss spending Christmas with his family.
--------------------
My +55 hockey on Wednesday was fun as a few former Wings/Maple Leafs played to get some ice time before going to participate in the outdoor alumni game. One former Wings captain and the other the all time NHL PIM leader. Four former NHL players are regulars with out group, so that is why some other guys come out.

Flyers Practice Plan Date:.08-01-14 Time: 20:15-21:45 Venue: Norma Bush

Notes:
5 D, 5 F and 2 G. Exam prep for gr.12’s Skill and good habits practice.
Point shots for the D with Blair. F scoring with the puck in the sweet spot.

10 min.
A2 Skating Warm-up for Edges and Balance

Key Points:
Good players can move in all directions efficiently because they and use all edges and have great balance on the ice. Routines for skating, puck handling, shooting and passing are efficient ways for a coach to quickly review the foundation skills and allow the players to get a lot of reps and improve at their own rate.

Description:

A2 Formation - Players start at one end and skate to the other end. - inside edges - out and in using a snowplow. - inside edges - sculling one leg at a time on the inside edges. - outside and inside edges - slalom with the skates together and a good knee bend. - balance and edges - one length of the ice on each leg. Repeat the same sequence but skate Backward. http://www.hockeycoachingabcs.com/mediagallery/media.php?f=0&sort=0&s=20110726073836113 The same warm up with 12-14 year olds. http://www.hockeycoachingabcs.com/mediagallery/media.php?f=0&sort=0&s=20110423080435937

10 min.
A2 Russian Puck-Handling Warm-up with Shots

Key Points:
This can be done every time players go on the ice to expand their muscle memory. The point of these exercises is to increase the size of the reach with the stickhandling moves, and to separate the upper and lower body.
This is one of the most important exercises a player can do to develop puck handling skills. All the moves can also be practice off ice with various kinds of balls and pucks.

10 min. Rule – must take 3 strides and then pass or shoot.
D4 Players Breakout before Attacking

Key Points:
To transition from defense to offense all the players must come out over the blue line and stay on side when they turn back to attack. The coach can designate modified rules for the game to work on either individual or team play skills.

Description:
1. One team attacks with the puck and tries to score.
2. The defending team must breakout over the blueline and then turn back and attack.

*Individual skills can be worked on. i.e.
-Skating-only backward skating allowed.
-Team Play - goals come only on plays originating below the goal line.
-Individual Offensive skills - an escape move must be made when you get the puck.
- Individual Defense - sticks upside down until one shot is taken.

10min.
D4 Two Pass – Player must make and escape move before a pass or shot.

Key Points:

My favorite game to warm up the players at the start of practice. The quicker they make the passes after regaining the puck the more scoring chances they produce. The game is the template and then you can add skill or good habit rules to practice 'How to Play the Game.'
Description:
1. Players must stay inside the blueline and if they puck goes out the other team gets it.
2. Before scoring the offensive team must make at least two passes.
3. When the defenders regain the puck they must make at least two passes before a shot.
4. Make rules with skills for skating, shooting, passing or good habits.

http://www.hockeycoachingabcs.com/mediagallery/media.php?s=20111005184904487

20 min. D practice full slap shots with Blair
B6 Point Shots

Key Points:
Skate forward inside the dot before pivoting to. Shoot low for a tip in or rebound. One time the second shot in option two. Hit the net. Everyone practice this skill.

Description:

Option One
a. One pass to two and then screen goalie.
b. Two drag and shoot.
c. One go to point for a shot then opposite corner.
d. Three pass to four then screen goalie.
e. Four drag and shoot.

Option Two
f. Two stay at the mid point and get a pass from four and shoot before rotating.

http://www.hockeycoachingabcs.com/mediagallery/media.php?s=20120430093036462

Forwards practice scoring at the other end.
B200 Scoring Circuit

Key Points:
Make quick moves and shoot while skating. Sell a fake shot and shoot where the goalie CAME FROM not where he is GOING.

Description:
1. Gretzky turn. Force the D to back up then skate laterally back and across.

Some scoring principles:
1. Shoot where the goalie is coming from not where they are going.
2. Cross the mid-line when possible to force the goalie to move across.
3. Shoot where the goalie ain’t.
4. Keep the puck in the sweet spot, triple threat position in middle of the blade. Don’t dust the puck off first.

Flyers Practice Plan 08-01-14

10 min. Start with 1-1 and then 2-2
DT100 Transition Game of Support, Defend, Attack, Rest

Key Points:
This is a great full ice transition game to practice offense and defense in all three zones. I have done this the last 2 practices with my team and my skills group. The coach can decide what to
focus on each time you do it. Instead of stopping the game talk to the players when they come back to the line. You can do this from 1-1 to a 3-3. I will put a modification that adds other nuances to the game at another date.
Point men only get one second with the puck to shoot or pass. Defenders cover the low players and ignore the pointmen.

Description:
A. 1 and 2 attack vs a and b and are supported on the blueline by 3 and 4 The pointmen cannot go farther than the top of the circle. When the puck goes to the point a and b control te sticks of 1 And 2.
Attackers cycle, screen, tip, drive the net. Defenders work on low coverage and B.O.
B. When a and b breakout over the blueline 1 and 2 are finished and there is a 2 on 2 in the nzone with a and b attacking 3 and 4.
C. After the puck crosses the blueline c and d support a and b from the point.

http://www.hockeycoachingabcs.com/mediagallery/media.php?f=0&sort=0&s=20120415181657595

Update on the season so far.
After getting almost a whole new team with many first year players and some who have played A which is a level below AAA we had a slow start. 2-6-2 our first ten games. In our last 14 we are 6-4-4 but struggle to score goals. We are last in an eleven team league in GF averaging 1.8 per game. We are 3rd best in GA behind the leaders in each division. Two of the teams in the league have more goals from their top two scorers than our entire team. So it leaves no room for weak goals against. We have played 3 games in the 2014 winning 2-1, 3-1 (en goal) and tying 1-1.

Our young players have a big upside but the league is 96-97-98 and last year they played vs. 98-99 and the size, speed and skill of the 96 born players is a huge difference than playing vs. 99 born players. In the boy's AAA the 98 born have their own league for that reason.

We play the top team in our division today and they have twice as many GF as we do but so far we are 2W and 1L against them. (thank goodness for good goalies)

So the challenge for a coach is to take the talent you get and identify what needs to improve and then work on improving a little every day.

DT4 Each Team Pass to Joker at Point

Key Points:
Player at the point must get open for a pass and quickly make a play. Defender get on the defensive side to block a shot and stay with the point man if he carries the puck.
Description:
1. One zone game and each team has one or two jokers at the point.
2. To transition to offense you must pass to the point.
3. Progression is to add the rule that all goales must come from point playes such as shots, tip-ins, redirects, shot passes, screen, rebounds. This causes the players at the point to skate and get the puck through and the player covering to stay defensive side and block shots and passes.

T2 Kingston Power Play and Team Play Rotation

Key Points:
Practice options where every player gets a shot. Begin with a rotation attacking the seam between the D and the F and read what they give. If the D forces then the low play is available, if the F forces then the point is open. If the pk box is passive then there is a 2-1 at each corner, a 3-2 on each side and seams between players to attack. Force the pace by taking a shot by a different player every 3 seconds. Coach in each zone.

Description:
- Line A at one end practice attack options.
- Line B at other end practice attack options. Both walk through pp 5-0.
- Line C in middle passing practice.
- On whistle line A dump the puck to the other end and breakout returning to the original end while group C replace group B at the far end and group B pass in the neutral zone.
- Repeat with group C breaking out and back and group B switch with group A who move to the middle.

D1 Full Ice 3 Team Scrimmage PP and PK. Leave one F in Nzone while defending.

Key Points:
Give close support to the ball or puck. Defending team create speed through the neutral zone after the breakout. New defending team identify coverage when the attackers enter the zone.

2-Green breaks out and attacks vs. Black waiting at the other end.
3-Black breaks out and attacks Red.
4-Green rests at the original end.
5-Black attack vs. Green.

They keep this rotation and play a game up to 5. Start another game at 0-0 but switch who they attack first i.e. now Green attacks Red and Red attack vs. Black and Black vs. Green. This rotation can be used to practice team play at full strength and power play and penalty kill.

PDF of the Wednesday practice. Cassie Campbell is the guest coach and will run the warm-up and help with the rest of practice. It is posted below. Bit of a blizzard outside now but I haven't got any cancellations because of the weather. If you don't come when the weather is bad in our winter you would miss a lot of practices.

Post practice comment:
Cassie came to practice last night. She brought autographed player cards for each of the players and gave them out in the dressing room before practice. She leaves for Sochi this weekend and is excited but a little nervous, as is everyone becuase of the terrorist threats.

She ran a skills circuit the first 20 minutes that had three stations and then she joined in on the next two skill drills. We divided into 4 teams for a one zone game at each end. We had 15 skaters so she played for one of the teams to give us 4 groups of 4. On the 1-1 and 2-1 I had her talk with the defensemen about how to play these situations and then she joined them in the transition game. There was one point shot drill she helped the girl's with and then a point shot game that she participated in.

I changed the last part of practice to all games because she was supposed to only stay for one hour and our practice was 90 minutes. I could see she was loving to play in the games and she ended up staying the entire 90 min. and afterwards she offered to come out and help when the Olympics are over. I hope we win some play-off rounds and are still active when she gets back.

Overall a great guest coach.

Our league started the first week of September and play-offs start this weekend with a best 2 of 3 series vs. the other Calgary team. Teams are virtually even finishing within one point of each other in the standings and a record of 2-2-1 in the five league agains each other games during the season. I am pasting the last practice here and will put the PDF of the Wed. practice as well. The goalie coach worked with the goalies at one end the first half of practice, so we did a lot of skill work and a few keepaway games.

We started our play-offs vs. the other Calgary AAA team. We are about as even as you can be. We finsihed within one point of each other in the 32 game regular season and were 2-2-1 in the 5 games we played .

It was one of the strangest games I have seen. 0-0 after one and then we scored iin the first 22"s of the second period and then scored 11"s later to lead 2-0 after 33". They scored one early in the third period to make it 2-1.

They pulled the goalie for a 6-5 and we broke out of our end with about 20" left. We took a long shot from their blue line which all of my players but one thought was in. Four players went crazy celebrating and jumped on each other in a pile. The linesman waved it off and they went down on a 5 on 1 with about 10" left. My one defender stayed in the middle and the goalie made the save. The pile of 4 untangled themselves and scrambled back when the clock ran out.

I thought I had seen everything when I coached in Austria and the opposition scored on themselves two weekends in a row when they made bad regroup passes on delayed penalties and the puck went into the empty net.

We have another game today and would play Sunday if the series is even.
------------------------------------------
Won 2-1 again today. No celebration until the game ended. We won the series two games to zero and start a best 3 of 5 next weekend vs. the top team in our division. We played them 4 times during the season and were 2-2.

We played very good hard working hockey in the first round and it pays to have the best goalie in the league.

So our season lasts at least another two weeks.

We won the first play-off round with two consecutive 2-1 wins vs. the other Calgary AAA team. We then played the top team a 3 of 5 series. Game one we had a 4-3 lead with a minute left but the scored with the goalie pulled in the last minute and won in OT. Game two they clobbered us 6-2 and then we had two practices. Game three we returned the favour and clobbered them 5-2. Game four was very tight. We led 1-0 after one, they tied it in the second and scored with 5 minutes left to lead 2-1. We got about 4 good chances with the goalie pulled but couldn't score. So we lost the series 3-1 are are eliminated.

I was very happy with the way we played in the play-offs. The team that beat us out scored over 100 goals in the 32 game schedule compared to our 54, We were offensively challenged but basically matched them in our series.

We have a practice on Wednesday and finish off with two exhibition games in Banff vs. the Banff Hockey Academy. We stay overnight.

Another sports school is starting up in Calgary. They are after our players and the ones who played for the team that just beat us out because those players live in the surrounding communities. I have no idea why parents pay between 18 000-35 000 to go to these sports schools. They seem to think that it enhances their child's chances for a college scholarship. We added a 90 minute practice per week to our schedule and now practice 4:15 hrs. per week as opposed to 4:45 at these schools. We do spin on the exercise bikes every Monday for an hour. They train off ice a few days a week.

If you are good enough you will get scholarship offers. Every player I have coached the last three years who has the talent has been offered a scholarship.

It is hard to fight perception; especially when these schools need students to pay the teacher salaries and facility costs. They tell them stories that just ARE NOT true and convince them that they need to attend these places if they want to play at the next level.

What you do need is.
1. High compete level
2. Talent.
3. Good coaching.
4. Adequate training time.

We offer that in spades.

It is amazing isn't it.

I ran a Select Team for our Atom Division this year, and we were able to keep the cost to $5.00 per session. We even had one of the Dad's Ref our games for free (a junior A coach)
We need to keep the cost of hockey down...... We are losing great talent because of the cost.

---------------------------------
Nike - Bauer etc. are making the game a rich person sport. Dany Heatley took his family down to Mexico to tour the Easton stick plant about 6 years ago. It costs them about $17 to make the one piece they charge $350 for. They are killing the Golden Goose with this 2000% markup. People think young kid's must travel to play with elite players at young ages and the travel cost is huge.

At some point parents may realize the key is: How good does the player skate, shoot, puck handle, compete, see the ice. etc. If you are good at these things then you will end up playing at the level your skill and compete level earns you.

I was part of the Drill of the Week Club again this season. The link has been on the homepage for a long time but I wasn't a member last season. Each coach posts 4 drills or games, recommend a book and give a quotation. I have added this years drills. Over a hundred from coaches of all levels but most are college, European pro, and higher level minor hockey. Great material. These guys are a lot smarter than I am.

We finished off the season with two exhibition games vs. the Banff Hockey Academy in Banff National Park. Game one we lost 2-0 and won game two 3-2. We stayed overnight and had a team wrap up party on Saturday evening at Melissa's Restaurant. It was a nice evening.

It is always strange when you wrap up a season. Those players will never be in a dressing room at the same time and I may never see some of them again in my life. About 45 games and 80 practices. Six graduate, a new sports school is opening that some will attend, some will move, one or two will quit. Calgary may go down to one team and then some won't make it. Who knows what I will be doing next season.

Every year is the same. I hope they learned something and enjoyed the season. The kid's were great to work with and I saw them slowly improve as the year went on. The one's who came to practice with the focus to get better improved a lot.

We just wrapped up our season this weekend with a tournament at Lake Placid, NY. I feel the same way Tom.

Tom,

This is the 2011 DWC, not 2013. Thought I'd point that out becasue it doesn't sound like it was what you intended.
