1. Re: Love for Hockey coaching ABC'S
Thanks Tom. I was saddened to see the destruction from the flooding on the news. --- The camp is in Hudson NH and it is hot. Mid 90's 16 skaters today with a lot of good players who are in college or ...

2. Re: Love for Hockey coaching ABC'S
I say in the video that this is the best practice activity. Now I think adding that the D join the rush and the F backcheck is more complete. Tom, do you have a link to a video of that handy? Is that the same as 1-1 ...

3. Re: Pee Wee Breakouts
Many teams seem to use a forecheck that prioritizes taking away the boards option. I have been stressing to our D that passing into coverage on the boards is just creating a loose puck battle which is no better than losing the puck in the corner. (Any stats out there ...

4. Re: Transition Games
A relatively easy transition game to learn is Perry Pern 3 v 3, where the defensive team passes to the next group of three players who enter on offense against the team that just lost possession of the puck. That worked fine with 7 and 8 year olds after about ...

5. Re: Shooting the wrist and snap shot
Thanks RC. That is a great video. Seems to me that once young players have the technique for the basic wrist shot, they should be practicing shooting pucks off either leg, on one leg, on one knee, etc. anyway. Then once they are heavy enough to get a good stick ...

6. Re: Shooting the wrist and snap shot
RookieCoach, can you please post the link to the online video that you are referring to? It seems like the pros really load up their sticks with their weight but don't take much of a windup.

7. Re: Game Sense, Play Reading
I personally have a droid tablet and will try experimenting with some of the software for that and report back in the coming month or two.

9. Re: Body Checking - Calgary may ban it til U15
The governing bodies, in my opinion, need to put out free video demonstrating (A) what is/is not legal body contact and (B) what is/is not legal checking, for all common checking/battling situations on the ice. Yes, USAH tried to do this, but the calls are way to easy to make ...

10. Re: Practice Planning Tool
Quote by: TomM The benefit of the diagrams is they can easily be inserted into the practice planning template. The pdf's give the description, diagram and most of the time a video link and the coding makes it easy to find and do a progression according to the level a ...

11. Re: games to encourage getting to the puck
1. Have players line up at blue line. 2. Shoot puck in and let them play 1 v 1 or 1 v 1 v 1 cross-ice. 3. You can get several 1 v 1 battles going at the same time, so there is less standing around.

12. Re: Game Intelligence Training
Why silence? I'm not sure anticipation can be taught verbally; it can only be learned experientially.

13. Re: New Blade Technology
Tom, can you share the inventor's last name or the patent number? Patents are publicly available, and I'd like to see the technology behind the blade.

15. Re: hockey drill designer or software
+1 on DrillDraw. I have tried Blueprint too, but DrillDraw is easier to use.

16. Re: Favorite Small Area Games
If you can't get rings use the same rule but with a puck or ball. You can also find "rings" suitable for ringuette at a pet store. That's what I use.

17. Re: Diary of a Season 2011-2012: The Plan
Quote by: hockeygod[p]rcmat, I emailed you... hope to talk to you middle to end of next week. Dean, thanks for the tryout tips. The 1 v 1s were extremely effective at exposing strengths and weaknesses. There were not enough goals scored to really use goals as ...

18. Re: 2011 Spring Teams
I used the one pass in each zone rule with great success with 8 y.o.'s last season. They started to head man the puck on their own (i.e, penetrating passes that Dean mentions), and the players without the puck were much more motivated support the puck carrier because they knew ...

19. Re: Diary of a Season 2011-2012: The Plan
What is the age of mites? 1) I find your comment about "I would prefer the luxury of picking the team in September, but that is the nature of our organization" interesting. In Calgary, we pick our hockey teams at the end of summer (start tryouts ...

20. Re: Diary of a Season 2011-2012: The Plan
We already have tryouts coming up for my Tier II mite team. I would prefer the luxury of picking the team in September, but that is the nature of our organization. As for picking a team, one thing I noticed last season is that, among the kids who ...

22. Re: Competitiveness
4paw, I coach several of my young children and have found that the best approach for them is "less is more." The less I initiate conversation about their performance, the more enthusiastic they are about playing their sports. For children that are not naturally aggressive, I think confidence ...

23. Re: introducing a forecheck to mites
Thanks Tom. Yes, this is a team of 7 and 8 year-olds. At that age do you still recommend a 2-1-2 over something more conservative where 1 takes the puck, 2 goes to the strong side boards, and 3 sets up in the middle?
