1. Re: Teaching support in all zones
I think one problem that exacerbates teaching support concepts is the skill level of younger players. Skating, making and receiving passes, timing ... are all required for them to experience success with supporting the play the same way an older player would. I think support for the younger ...

2. Re: Help w/ DZC
One bad defensive habit I have seen with my players in the past is chasing the pass instead of coming off their check and beating him back to the net. This behavior can be reinforced by a lot of odd man in zone drills if you don't stay on top ...

3. Re: Building Confidence & Competitiveness of a timid child
Quote by: peter I coach U-10 hockey, and for this upcoming season I'm planning on using the attack-defend-rest (Perry Pearn 3-3 half ice) in most of our practices. Practice format will be skating 10-15min, followed by one area for teaching the game 8-10 min.( D - ...

4. Re: DZC
Wow ...um so I hope none of my opponents are looking at this thread. I don't have any good ideas for defending this, which is scary. I'm really gonna have to think on this one. It looks a lot like a typical basketball play, only it would ...

5. Re: Strength Training
I am going to recommend checking out Crossfit as well. They have a journal you can subscribe to that has TONS of information and videos, some specifically for coaching kids, proper techniques and how to teach them, exercise/nutrition theory etc. Its amazing how many kids can't squat properly unweighted! I ...

8. Re: Body Checking in Youth Hockey
You are right on the money RK. It seems like there is a lot of focus by players and parents on the transition from atom (squirt) to peewee because of the introduction of checking. Maybe we could eliminate some of that anxiety/intimidation by not having such an obvious transition there. ...

9. Re: Body Checking in Youth Hockey
Dean your post made me chuckle. :D But, you made a very good point about everyone mastering THEIR role in player safety. I think Tom is on to somthing. It sounds like it would be fairly easy to implement, and would be met with less resistance ...

10. Re: Body Checking - Calgary may ban it til U15
I totally agree Tom. I was thinking about it when I wrote the original post. I thought it made it in there, but apparently not. I also think its very important that the call NOT be “checking” call it a roughing or whatever. Otherwise you deal with the stick on ...

11. Re: Body Checking - Calgary may ban it til U15
This rule change was implemented by USA Hockey this past season, and they are in the process of collecting feedback from coaches. While I coached Bantams, I did get a chance to see quite a few pee wee games, and what disturbs me is the absence of consistent officiating. It ...
