Jasper Hockey Camp

For the last many years Jasper Minor Hockey has brought Gaston and I up to do a 3 days camp. The last five years my son Jim has come as well. Two groups 5-8 and 9-15 with a mix of girl's and boy's. The young ones get on hour of skating with Gaston and one of hockey with me and Jim. The older ones get one hour of skating and 75 minutes of hockey per day. It is a beautiful drive up. Good highway driving to Lake Louise then 225 km. up highway 93 of an ice covered mountain pass with cliffs on both sides.

The description below is for the game organization and the first video is about the whole camp and not just the games and shows skating and puck handling and the little guys playing hand hockey between the skating and hockey sessions.
the other three video show the players doing the skating warm up with Gaston, young group playing a King's Court tournament and the older group doing a battle game of 1 vs. 1 vs. 1.

I love the place, the people and doing this camp.

-------------------------------------------------------------
D - Game Organization for the Jasper Camp

Key Points:

Play 3 cross ice games at once. Six one net games at once, two nets on each goal line. Combine the way you use the nets. Basic principle is the larger the team the more group activity and the smaller the team the more individual activity.

Description:

1 - Cross ice one net games, two pass, bounce off boards or pass to resting teammate.
2 - Puck or different balls at each game. Switch balls every 5 minutes.
3 - Passing rules, 2-3 passes, 2" with puck, one touch, only forehand, backhand, saucer.
4 - You must make an escape move before a pass or shot, only one pass allowed.
5 – The older group played 8-8 full ice with the rule there must be at least one pass in each zone.

This video shows the little kid's playing, the older group skating and the 5-8 year olds on the ice doing puck handling and games.

I have used some of this video before but the focus here is to show how the Russians constantly move, go from high to low, go from side to side below the goal line and rotate side to side at the point. There is zero standing still and one timer passes and shots are the focus. The constant moving and changing the point of attack creates seams for passes for one timers and back door plays. I have watched hundreds of power play practices with pro and U20 teams around the world and this is the best I have watched. Overload to 1-3-1 diamond to spread to slot set. Point of attack high, low, point. It takes great skill to be able to one touch and skate head up with the puck but if you can do it scoring chances are created constantly.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
T2 - 5-4 PP - Russian U20

Key Points:

Either the puck or the player moves and they continually switch positions low and at the point and change the point of attack low by skating behind the net. Pass low to get the pk to ‘Stare’ and sneak into a seam behind for a one timer. I watched them play an ex game and they scored with the low spread with a pass and one timer. Never stand still with the puck.

Description:

1. 5-4 in one end.
2. Start with an overload.
3. Rotate into a diamond 1-3-1.
4. Pass low and the player move behind the net for a low diamond 1-3-1.
5. Sometimes rotate into a low 2-1-2 spread with two attackers below the goal line.
6. Mostly left handed shots so one timers are from the goalies left side.
7. Player on the hash always has an easy outlet to the point or below the goal line.
8. Constant movement side to side with points sneaking in for a one timer.
9. D skate one side to the other with the puck and switch sides.
10. Tap to the middle player who can shoot or pass to anyone.
11. Continually go side to side to change the point of attack and spread the PK.

* Mostly one touch passes and lateral skating looking for one timer shots.

Wally Kozak does a great job teaching puck support to U15 boy's. They start with 3-0 one touch passing and moving, then a defender is added and they get 3 chances to score. Another attacker and defender join and they play 4-2 one touch. Next they play a transition game of 2-2 with one Joker at the top of the circles. You must pass to the Joker to be on offense. They finish with two Jokers at the point and the Jokers can pass to the team that regrouped with them or shoot.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is the Czech U20 team that came to Calgary to practice and play a tournament with two teams from Canada and the Russians. Them and the Russians practiced at the Edge School just outside of Calgary. This is a short clip that I took just as I got there and caught the end of the individual warm-up. Petr Svoboda, who played for Toronto coached their defense. I worked with him in the Czech Republic doing a hockey camp and also mentored him in his practice plans for his team. The club offered me a job as coach mentor. Petr coached the Czech U17 team that came to Calgary for a Christmas tournament and has taken the top certification now and is with their U20 team. Great guy. He let me know he was coming and I attended all their practices and have posted a lot of the drills with them and the Russians here.

B5 - Breakout Reps - Czech U20

Key Points:

Defense go through the options for picking up a dump in. Shoulder check one way, fake, hard strides with the puck. It is great to put the players in charge of their own development. Instead of being robots they have to think of the options, good habits and skills required and then do them on their own.

Description:

1. Defense at one end and alternate options when they go back for a puck.
2. Shoulder check, fake turn right, left, counter, wheel.
3. The D to D options; over, reverse can also be done.

T4 Penalty Kill vs 1-3-1 Diamond

This pk style was replaced by the 1-3 and now many teams have gone back to the diamond.

Key Points:
Defend in a collapsible diamond with the top player skating up and back and only sideways if the point man skates with the puck.

Description" from the diagram in the pdf. attached below.

1 - Skate in straight lines out from the net. Drop to the slot when the puck is passed to either side. DO NOT CHASE PASSES TO EITHER SIDE.

2-3 - Diamond when the puck is in the middle and block shot when at your side. Collapse to middle when the puck is passed to the other side.

4 - Front the screener and seal stick to the outside on a shot.

* If the mid-point player with the puck skates one way the top man has to go with him. If he skates and passes back to the middle then the player who did the 'fall under' to the middle go straight out and become the high man and the original high man switch roles with him. It is a tandem rotation. Do you never allow an unchallenged shot from the point.

Key is to 'Defend from the NET Out.'

Pentalty Killing Principles

I am re-posting these ideas about Penalty Killing. It seems that all teams now do the Fall Under where the weak side player vs. a 1-3-1 covers the player in the middle. I was at a game vs. Washington and the pk let Ovechkin take 4 one timers from his off witng and then did the same with Stamkos. Needless to say it didn't seem like a good idea.

Instead the defenders should be in a diamond with the player on top not much farther than the top of the circles with his legs in front of the shot. Never chase a pass to the side but stay in the middle and drop down to their player in the middle of the 1-3-1 and allow the F and D on the sides to get in front of the shooter and the D in front to box out. So the middle high man goes up and down from the goal out. Be aggressive unless the pp has total control facing the play.

Skate from the net out and don't chase passes to the side but stay on the puck carrier if he skates with it. Here is a posting I made a few years ago. I still play hockey with the same group on M-W morning.

-------------------------------------------------------------

A couple of days ago I asked Bob Murdoch, former two time Stanley Cup winning player and Coach
of the Year in the NHL and Germany if he would discuss his thought on specialty teams with me. Last
year I was coaching with Pierre Page and he used a very aggressive PK that they used together as
assistants on the Flames. So I wanted to compare their ideas. Mud agreed to meet with me and we
went to an empty dressing room after our over 55 morning game and I listened for an hour.

http://hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=3847 is his hockey db profile and he played for
legends like Fr. Bauer, Scotty Bowman and coached with Bob Johnson who he thing was the best
teacher.

So here are the thoughts that we talked about and drew on the coaching board.

Penalty Killing:

Murdoch has gone away from the ultra aggressive penalty kill rotation that Pierre uses with the Red
Bulls. He thinks it works great if all 4 players move together every time but if they don’t rotate or
over rotate then it leave players open in scoring positions.

Scoring Area: (diagram in attached pdf.)

Guidelines:

- The goal of penalty killing is to protect the front of the net and keep the puck to the outside.

- Go to the puck “through the net” in a straight line. Pads denying the shot and stick on the
ice in a dangerous passing lane.

- Be aggressive with the stick on the puck if you can arrive at the same time or before the
puck or if the attackers back is turned and he/she doesn’t have complete puck control.

- The closest player always challenge with the stick on the ice, skating in a straight line
while the other players rotate.

Always
1. one player rotate to the front of the net
2. one on the puck,
3. one denying the slot pass but ready to move to a short passing option.
4. farthest player with the stick in the dangerous passing lane and usually has the 2-1.

- When they pass away drop down into the scoring area with the stick on the ice denying passes across or into the scoring area. Prevent passes through the slot.

- Penalty Killing vs the Slot Set Power Play.
-
- Don’t get tied up with players, you must be free to rotate. Take their stick when the puck is coming don’t wrestle them.
- Don’t finish checks on the pk. It takes you out of the play and you can’t rotate.
- Skate in straight lines up and back and Don’t Chase to the Outside.
- D should not go to the point.
- Don’t rotate positions but challenge the puck and then drop back into the slot area.
- Drop back quickly so they can’t pass behind you. It is the most dangerous play.

I will post the pk vs. Diamond tomorrow.

Diagrams in the pdf. describe this.
