PDF’s of Drills and Games for Practice – One Drive

These are the PDF's of hockey practice ideas that I have put together over the last ten years. Ideas from every level; pro men to boy's, pro women to girl's. North America and European teams. They can be sorted multiple ways. Refer to the document that explains the coding system used to organize the material to make it easy to find what you want.

https://1drv.ms/f/s!AukXg5gWoW-9pEfeVWbIL9YG0crr

Video Clips of Drills and Games for Practice

These also can be sorted in various ways. These videos also cover every gender and age and hockey level. If you don't like the ideas at least you can see how the rest of the hockey world practices the game. I wish I had video from the over 800 hours I coached Korean school, university and pro teams from 1988-97.

https://1drv.ms/f/s!FukXg5gWoW-9ck5tNjJaWHF4ZEt3JAw

I know that there is a lot of hockey material on the internet now. This isn't meant to compete with any other source. Juhani Wahlsten and myself have been trying to influence coaches together since 1985 and Juhani since 1974 to run more efficient and enjoyable practices based on two themes: 'Enjoy the Game' and 'The Game is the Greatest Coach.'

In Europe they have used 'Games to Team the Game' for a long time. Soccer is the main sport in most countries and the games model has been part of that sport for a long time. Some countries more than others. The idea is gaining traction in North America with the USA taking the lead and Canada being dragged behind like a screaming unruly child.

It is great to use SAG's like cross ice 3-3 but with rule modifications like everyone must get a pass or you must make an escape move when you get the puck you can use them to teach players how to use their skills within game situations.

Transition games use only one puck and no whistles. They are a natural progression for game situation drills 1-1 to 3-2. Players flow into the game situation either actively or passively and you can practice every situation for individual and team skill.

The first coach I saw using these was Vladimir Jursinov the famous Russian and Soviet multiple Olympic coach. Erkka Westerlund the Finnish Olympic coach produced a booklet and video for Hockey Canada on how to use Transition games. Some NHL coaches like Mike Babcock and Glen Gulutzan use them on a regular basis but not as much as they could.

B500 - Puck Battles 1-1- Pro

Key Points:

Protect the puck by shielding with the body and moving it out of the defenders reach. Defender keep the stick on the ice and blade on blade.

Description:

1. Pair up with a partner.
2. Start with a puck along the boards facing each other about 3 m. from the puck.
3. Battle for the puck in a small area on the whistle.
4. Go 10” and the player with no puck do push-ups.
5. Move the puck 3 m. from the boards and start from the boards.
6. Battle again for 10”.
7. No puck do push-ups.

*Players can also start about 3m. from the boards (10 feet) with the puck against the boards.

* A good progression is to play 2-2 keepaway with 1 point for 7 consecutive passes, then to 4-4 and have rules such as only backhand passes, or one hand only on the stick.

Pro Game Day Practice 3-9-17

Key Points:

Players know the drills before practice and go from one to the other. Players and coaches move the pucks together. No one goes to the board as the coach simply calls out the next drill. This is a routine that the players learn. Two teams have the ‘Black Aces’ who won’t play that night do skills and conditioning.

Description:

1. Breakout 5-0 at both ends, do a rep from each side and have the goalie handle the puck.
2. Shots from three lanes.
3. Small horseshoe 1-1; do both and then change sides.
4. Dump in and breakout 3-0, regroup and attack 2-1, then repeat at the other end.
5. Individual and partner skills: point shots, face-offs, cut in and score, goalie warm-up, edges, passing, attack 4-0 with options, conditioning skate.

Hi Tom,

I notice in all your regroups when the d hinges he moves up rather then behind the D with the puck. We have always been taught to hinge one stick below the other d with the puck to avoid the pass being intercepted. Curious as to the reason you teach the d hinging up?

----------------------
Thanks for the question. If the D skates up ice his partner goes to the middle below him and if he skates back to the middle the partner skates wide and up. The key point is to hinge and not be parallel where the checker can skate in between the D and intercept the pass. Many of the drills show both.

Thanks makes sense.

C600 - Continuous 2-2 Breakouts - U18 F

Key Points:

Defense shoulder check before you get the puck and forwards give support on the boards and middle on the strong side. D read the pressure and skate away from it. If possible pass to the centre first, then look to the strong side wing, if those aren’t open go D to D behind or with a reverse or counter. The forecheckers try to score 2 on 4.

Description:

1. Red D and White F start from opposite blue lines.
2. Start D1-D2 pass to F1-F2.
3. F1-F2 dump the puck in and D3-D4 go back for the puck.
4. F1-F2 forecheck vs. D3-D4.
5. F3-F4 support D3-D4.
6. D3-D4 make a breakout pass to F3-F4.
7. F3-F4 now cross the red line and dump the puck in vs. D5-D6 and forecheck.
8. F5-F6 follow the play for a breakout pass from D5-D6.

* This breakout sequence can be done with 1, 2 or 3 F and 1 or 2 D.

* Principle is the quicker you get the puck up ice the less time the other team has to get well organized.

T3 - Blocking Shots – University M, U17, Sweden

Key Points:

Defend from the net out.

Skate to defensive side and look where the net is, then out toward the shooter. Drop to one knee, turn the face sideways with the free hand protecting the face pad side out. Turn the inside elbow pad to face the shooter. This technique keeps the skate on the ice and allows the player to quickly skate.
Cut a tennis ball into 16 equal strips and insert through the holes in a baseball sized waffle ball. This makes it about the same weight as a puck and it slides well on the ice and doesn’t injure the players.

Description:

1. Coaches have whiffle balls stuffed with a tennis ball.
2. Player skate to the inside and look to line up between the shot and the net.
3. Player skate toward the shooter.
4. Player drop to one knee sideways when shooter takes his stick back.
5. Coach shoot and player block the shot.

*Players have make sure they don’t slide out of the shooting lane on a fake shot and retain the ability to be lined up between the puck and the net.

This was a skills camp with both boy's and girl's run spring 2016. The girl's were all 98 born and played for my U18 AAA team that won the Provincial Silver a few months before. They are all playing in the Usport this season. It was a coach development week and they used these players to practice running an effective 'hockey practice'. I will post some more of the drills they used.
