Key Points:

Defense must mirror the play and maintain a tight gap by skating forward and then using a chocktaw turn to skate backward and defend the blue line instead of backing in.

2. Go the other way on the whistle.
3. D2 pick up a puck at the blue line and pass to F1-F2.
4. D1 follow and maintain a tight gap with F1-F2.
5. F1-F2 on both sides attack 2-1 vs. D1.

*Progress to F1-F2 carry a puck and regroup with D2 and then to a double regroup first with D1 then D2.

T1 - D Tight Turn Up and Wheel – Pro

Key Points:

Coach spots the puck below the goal line and the player goes back for it making an escape move to beat the forechecker. It is very important to shoulder check one way and read where the checker is coming from. Sell the fake to make the checker lean one way. Always skate away from pressure.

Description:

1. Start at the face-off dot skate forward to the top of the circle, coach spot a puck deep.
2. Skate backward and turn, shoulder check, fake then tight turn up ice and pass to the coach.
3. Skate to the top of the circle and repeat and tight turn the other way and pass to the coach.
4. Repeat a third time but now a coach or player forechecks.
5. Drive skate to the back of the net and wheel up ice cutting close to the post then pass to the coach.

Key Points:

Defense shoulder check then pick up the puck and quickly move it up ice. If possible skate inside the dots before passing. Forward post up always facing the puck and time skating so he is moving when he gets the pass. Coach give passive resistance either at the blue line or back in.

Description:

1. Defense leave from the middle and pick up a puck spotted just inside the blue line.
2. Forward leave from the hash marks and post up ready for a pass when the D looks up ice.
3. Forward read coach resistance and fake inside, go outside if he defends the blue line.
4. Forward skate to the middle if the coach backs in and gives up the blue line.

* Alternate sides.

*Options: circle back for the next rebound, give and go with next shooter, defend 1-1 vs. next shooter.

T3 - 2-1 With Back Checker - U17

Key Points:

Defender, goalie and back checker have to communicate who to cover. Attack quickly and make the first play near the blue line to force the defenders to make a decision and allow a second play.

Description:

1. Start with F1-F2 attack D1 and F3 back check from the corner.
2. D2 follow the play from along the boards in the neutral zone.
3. Next attacker F4 start from the corner with a puck when the play is over.
4. Back checker F3 transition to offense and F3-F4 attack vs. D2.
5. F5 back check.
6. D3 follow the play.

You can see the back checker not finishing the play and here are a few ideas to improve the drill.

* Finish the play and the D make the breakout pass.

* Another idea is to give a time limit to score, i.e. 8" then blow the whistle for next rep.

T3 – Defending 1-1 From Standing Start – Youth Skills

Key Points:

Never lose defensive side and if beat wide turn inside and race to the near post because it is a 1/4 as opposed to a 3/4 turn. When doing any drill finish the play.

Description:

1. Start from diagonal corners.
2. Attacker start from the goal line and defender from the face-off circle.
3. Defender face the boards in an athletic stance with the lead skate turned to the inside, slightly turned toward the attacker.
4. Defender do a maximum 2-3 cross over’s and then stride backwards. (There is a trend now not to do any cross-over’s but start striding after the half turn.)
5. Keep the attacker outside the mid-line of the body and the gap within a stick length.
6. If the attacker drives wide flare back a little and turn to skate forward, then angle to the corner.
7. If beaten wide then turn to the inside and head straight to the near post to regain defensive side.
8. After a shot box out the attacker and take his stick before looking for the rebound.
9. Move the defenders to start closer to the attacker.
10. Move the drill and attacker start from the blue line with the defender at the dot.

DT400 Continuous Two Thirds Ice 2-2 - College W

Key Points:

The defenders get passive support above the face-off circles while they play a low 2-2. The next defenders skate over the red line to close the gap on the next attackers. You can play this game position specific or everyone plays on offense and defense.

Description:

1. Half the players on each team line up behind the red line on both sides of the ice.
2. Two reds 1-2 start at the far blue line and attack vs. two blues 1-2.
3. Two players 3-4 from the defending red team follow the play inside the circle as wings would in their zone.
4. On a frozen puck, goal or breakout blue 1 or 2 pass to a supporting blue 3 or 4.
5. Blue 3-4 skate to the far blue line and turn back.
6. Red 3-4 skate over the red line and turn back to defend vs. the attacking blue 3-4.
7. Red 5-6 follow the play and give passive support for the breakout.

*This transition game can be done from 1-1 to 3-3 and can be done from both ends at once.

*If it is an uneven situation like a 3-2 one supporting player can join the low coverage and the other 2 give passive support.

C5 - Defensive 1-1 x 6 – Jasper Skating and Hockey Camp

Efficient Use of the Ice - Multiple Nets

Key Points:

This organization works very well when you have large groups on the ice or a big difference in ability. The key is the players practice the skill and don’t have to wait in line a long time. Give instruction, move from group to group progress to games without the players having to switch stations. I have used this multi net in camps around the world with either no goalies, lots of goalies or a combination of big and little nets.

Description:

1. Put 2 to 4 nets on each goal line or you could have them along the boards practicing across the ice.
2. Players line up just inside the blue line or for older players outside the blue line.
3. One player defends while the first player in line skates around the other player and attacks 1-1.
4. When the play is over the original attacker skates out and defends vs. the second player in line.
5. When the play is finished the defender passes to the first player in line and skates out to close the gap.
6. Add an attacker and play 2-1 or 2-2.

* You could have net at each red line to make 8 stations.

DT400 - Two Net Game - U18 F

Key Points:

There are two nets on the goal line. Play 1-1 to 5-5 in even or uneven situations. There is quick transition from offense to defense.

Description:

1. Start with one to five whites attacking one net vs. one to five darks.
2. On a goal, frozen puck or transition the dark pass to their players at the blue line.
3. New darks attack the net on the other side and the original whites skate hard across and defend.
*This game requires quick transition and communication about who to cover on defense.
*Attack quickly to take advantage of the unorganized defense.
* Keep score and implement rules for good habits, team play or technique.

DT100 - Continuous 2-1 - Passive Support – Pro

Key Points:

One puck with no whistles. Go for the rebound but defenders allow transition after the puck is out of the scoring area. Move the puck quickly and make the first pass early in the offensive zone. Extra players rotate in from the boards in the neutral zone. This is a great template either active or passive to work on situations up to 3-2. i.e. Have D1 join the rush, F1 back pressure, D1 and F1 join the rush etc. to create many situations.

Description:

1. Start with a 2-1, F1-F2 attacking D1. F3-F4 and D2 follow the play into the zone.
2. After the puck is out of the scoring area F1-F2 allow D1 to make a breakout pass to F3-F4.
3. F3-F4 attack the other way 2-1 vs. D1.
4. F5-F6 and D3 follow ready for a new 2-1.

* This can be made into an active 3-3 at each end by finishing the play.

* Keep score and create a game and play situations 1-1 to 3-2.

* Regroups in the neutral zone and dump-ins create opportunity to work on breakouts and forechecking.

B - Skill Warm-up Circuit – Pro

Key Points:

Use deception when passing and move to the open space. Protect the puck with your body and move away from pressure with the puck. Each circle is a station with goalies in the middle doing crease movement exercises.

Description:

1. Two players at a time skate inside the circle with a puck and do moves in all directions 10”. Practice tight turns and escape moves. Goalies do crease skating in the middle.
2. Play “Monkey in the middle” switch every 15” or when monkey intercepts a puck. Use fakes and the support players move to open ice.
3. Two players pass across the circle with one defender in the middle. Deception and saucer passes are the tools used. Defender anticipate the pass with his stick.

Teaching Team Play

I sent the same coach the manual on teaching team play as well as a list of videos on YouTube with the same title. Many of the drills are on both pdf's and many of the ideas are either on YouTube or in the manual. There are many drills that are not not written up yet but posted on YouTube.

Hopefully the material is useful to coaches at the beginning of this new season.

These are links to the manuals on teaching individual and team offense and defense.

T2 - Practicing Scoring U18F

E1 - C1 - Scoring Sequence - U18F

C1 - 1-1, 2-2 - U18F

Three nets. Three groups in the neutral zone circle back then cross and drop, go in for a shot then come out and play the 1-1, 2-1 or 2-2. Next group don't leave until the defender gets to the top of the circle.
Play tight gaps.

https://youtu.be/2ANhYPNgxEQ

E1 - Relay Race 1-0 x 3 - U18F

1-0 relay race. If the player scores they must race to the near blue line before the next player can leave and if they don't score they skate with the puck to the blue line before passing.
Have a race to 5 goals and the winning team sits down when they reach 5.

https://youtu.be/i-ol256GDbc

E1 - 2-0 Shootout Relay Race x 3 - U18F

2-0 relay race. If the player scores they must race to the near blue line before the next player can leave and if they don't score they skate with the puck to the blue line before passing.
Have a race to 5 goals and the winning team sits down when they reach 5.

https://youtu.be/LBVj1iI9u2w

We had three goalies and 19 skaters and played a 3-3 King's Court tournament. One injured player regrouped with the offensive team on transition. Each game was 6' and they rotated after each game. I explained the reasons for each rule. Rules for each game.

Game One: Goals only count after a 'Give and Go.'

Game Two: Repeat 'Give and Go' rule as the players have the 'Give and Watch Habit.'

Game Three: You must make an escape move when you get the puck. (Teaches them to move quickly to open ice when they get the puck.)

Game Four: Goals only count on one touch shots. (Teaches going to the net without the puck.)

Game Five: Two seconds with the puck. (Teaches puck support, head up, passing.)

Game Six: Two second game and all goals must be on one touch shots. (Teaches puck support, going to the net without the puck, passing.)

D200 x 3 Games of Kings Court – Youth

We played 3 cross-ice games at this practice. Nets on one side and transition to offense by bouncing the puck off the far boards in two games and regrouping with the Joker in one game.

Key Points:
Develop split vision by having no defined boundaries, use modified rules to focus on skills and habits, create competition, game situations, transition from offense to defense and defense to offense.

C6 - Low 2-1 Battle – Pro

Key Points:

Players wait above the top of the circle. Defender must continuously decide who the most dangerous player is. It is a 2-1 with the 2 F and on D but really a 2-2 , so the goalie and D must communicate. The key is to keep the puck on one side and not cross the mid-line where the goalie has to go post to post.

Description:

1. Start with 2 F in the corner facing the boards and one D behind them.
2. Coach dump a puck into the corner.
3. Forwards attack to score and defender must skate the puck above the circles.
4. Compete until the puck is out of play, a goal or the D skates it out.

T2-4 Forecheck - Breakout Sequence – Pro

Key Points:

Goalie and D’s communicate. F1 on strong side boards, F2 swing low and slow, F3 weak side. Attack with middle drive, screen for the point shot. Start with one forechecker, then two then three.

Description:

1. Start with a 5-0 breakout, shot then point shot, attack until the whistle.
2. Coach whistle and dump a puck in for a new breakout.
3. Original forwards forecheck starting with one then two then three.
4. The third group come on ready to breakout and forecheck.

* Contain forecheck because the offense has their toes up ice. F1 on the puck, F2 strong side boards, F3 weak side boards.

* Defense read the pressure and make the first pass to an open player.

* Coach can choose to spot the puck just inside the zone for a quick up.

D200 x 6 Games of Kings Court – Youth

Key Points:

Develop split vision by having no defined boundaries, use modified rules to focus on skills and habits, create competition, game situations, transition from offense to defense and defense to offense.

Description:

1. Put 3 to 6 nets on one side of the ice with space enough to skate behind.
2. Play from 1-1 to 3-3 at each net.
3. If playing even teams of 1-1, 2-2 then bounce the puck of the far boards to go on offense.
4. Teach good habits and skills by enforcing modified rules such as ‘give and go needed’ to score.
5. Keep score and play ‘Kings Court’, game winners move one net toward the Kings Court and game losers move the other way. Winner and loser at each end stay at that net. Tied games are decided by Rock-Paper-Scissors.
6. You can also play an attack-defend-support rotation instead of bounce the puck off the boards, i.e. Three players, 1 attack vs. 2 and 4 rest at the far boards. When there are no goalies and small nets the rule is you can’t score on shots from over half way. On a goal or turnover 2 pass to 3 who attacks vs. 1 and 2 rest.
7. If you have six nets then six games are needed to declare a true ‘Kings Court Champion.’
8. If you have cross ice games then the winners to side and rotate toward ‘Kings Court’ and the losers rotate the other way and the team at each end stays.
9. This camp had 12 of each age group and each had a 1-1 tournament. The better players end up at the ‘Kings Court’ end and the weaker at the other end. It is a great way to pick teams.
10. Notice that all 24 players are moving and the ‘Game teaches the game.’
11. The coaches role is to create and enforce the rules that work on skills and good habits.

Description:

1. Line up with the face-off dots and 1 to 3 players race for a loose puck the coach shoots in.
2. Pass to the point to transition to offense.
3. Point player must shoot or pass within 2 seconds.
4. If a point pass goes out the other pointman gets the puck.

*Players must race to get onside before the next puck is shot in.

*Keep score and add rules like goals must be on one touch shots, or give and go plays, etc..

*This is the favorite game for some of the pro players I have coached over the years.

U17 Elite Camp Drills

There was an Elite U17 Camp at the Winsport Arenas last week. I was in Jasper for most of it but caught a few practices the last two days. They did some good things. It was a much better camp than the one last year. A lot less talking on the ice and more activity. I make comments during some of the drills but that is what I do when watching.

In the summer my time is spent putting all the material together as in the 2016 Drill Manuals. This is done and I will edit this plus lots of other video and start producing the Daily Drills again to share on this site and use in my practices.
