Welcome to any AAU Coaches and Players

To the AAU Coaches and Players,

There is lots of coaching information on the Hockeycoachingabcs.com site and this Forum is available for discussion on any hockey coaching topic.

Take a look around at the Daily Drill section and the Video section. You can use the search function to find any subject and the advanced search to refine the topic.

I am working with the hockey director Mike Hartman and under the guidance of Keith Noll we want the coaches in AAU hockey to have access to the best and most current hockey coaching ideas anywhere.

To make it easier to find drills and games you can use in your practices I will post links that will take you to the practice ideas. The purpose of this not for profit site is to help coaches plan practices make the game fun for the kid's.

AAU HOCKEY ANNOUNCES TOM MOLLOY JOINS THE AAU NATIONAL ICE HOCKEY PROGRAM

AAU National Hockey Chair, Keith Noll is pleased to announce Tom Molloy, Co-Author of the ABC’s of International

Ice Hockey (Volumes one & two) http://hockeycoachingabcs.com has joined Mike Hartman, former NHL and Stanley Cup

Winner with the 1994 New York Rangers as the AAU National on ice technical development director for the hockey

program. Noll stated, “Tom’s interest and experience in player development and coaching will be of

This is a great progression for teaching the fundamental skills of hockey.

I think the most important feature of these postings is the 'Scope and Sequence' that is used. Most of the hockey material that is produced jumps all over the place without a starting place and no teaching progression or sequence of material that are taught. The Swedes have done a great job of identifying what needs to be learned by an aspiring hockey player and put the material into a great progression. I have added some examples from Finland and Russia with players from those countries demonstrating.

The material goes up to 3 on 3. A coach can take this scope and sequence and add their favorite drills and games to enhance the learning process. More video clips of skill work with descriptions will be added when they are ready.

Skating Skills

Most of this skill technique material is from the Swedish Federation with clips from other countries. I have added some other material that compliments the technique and put English text to describe the technique and add comments on principles they omit. At the end of some topics are pdf.s with many more drill ideas from around the world.

As an introduction I am posting a video that shows the constant transitions that happen in a hockey game. All of the skating, offensive and defensive skills and good habits are needed to be effective.

Detroit vs. Pittsburgh - a demonstration of the transition between the 3 game situations, and 4 game playing roles in one minute of an NHL game.

0-Loose Puck 1-Offensive 2-Defensive Situations are worked on as well as the Four Game Playing Roles

Offense: Role 1 – player with the puck and Role 2 – players supporting the puck carrier.

Defense: Role 3 – player checking the puck carrier. Role 4 – players covering away from the puck.

(The colours are from the posting on the transitions in a hockey game that shows one minute of Detroit vs. Pittsburg and the colours appear at the top when Detroit is 0-battling for a loose puck 1-on offense 2-on defense.. It is a great example of what really happens in a hockey game and why it is a game of transition. The video was prepared by Kai Katajalehto who coaches in Finland. )

Ideas from around the hockey world on how to practice puck handling.

How the pdf works.

1. If the title is blue then it takes you to the forum posting if there is one. The posting has the description, diagram and pdf. of the drill or game. If there is a video it will have the link to it there as well. The pdf. has everything and can be copied if you want to add the drill to your data base.

2. The link below the title takes you to a video demonstration about 75% of the time. If there is no video then it takes you to the forum posting only.

It works the same with the game situation 1-1, 2-1, 2-2, 3-2, 3-3, that I sent before.

It starts of with the Swedish scope and sequence for puck handling and these only have a video link as I haven't done the description and diagram as of yet. The Swedish videos last about 60" each and I have put English text which you won't need if you speak Swedish. I then add ideas from other coaches along with games to practice puck handling.

Games to Practice Shooting

To practice shooting in game situations modify the rules for scoring. i.e.

1. Goals must come from one timer shots.
2. Goals must originate from point shots.
3. Goals must be scored from plays below the goal line.
4. Goals can only be scored using certain shots. i.e. slap shot, backhand, wrist, snapshot, tip etc.

It works the same with the game situation 1-1

The Swedish videos last about 60" each and I have put English text which you won't need if you speak Swedish. I then add ideas from other coaches along with games to practice passing and receiving passes.

How the pdf works.

1. If the title is blue then it takes you to the forum posting if there is one. The posting has the description, diagram and pdf. of the drill or game. If there is a video it will have the link to it there as well. The pdf. has everything and can be copied if you want to add the drill to your data base.

2. The link below the title takes you to a video demonstration about 75% of the time. If there is no video then it takes you to the forum posting only.

It works the same with the game situation 1-1and 2-1.

The Swedish videos last about 60" each and I have put English text which you won't need if you speak Swedish. I then add ideas from other coaches along with games to practice passing and receiving passes.

My goal is to have the most comprehensive place for international hockey coaching ideas. I have spent the last 10 or more years gathering material and traveling around the hockey world. The goal is to make it easier for coaches to run good practices that the players enjoy and learn to play the game.

Remember that you are coaching a 'GAME' where the players must carry the puck, pass and shoot while being checked. Drills introduce the skills and practice doing them better and faster but if you can't recognize the game situation then you will not be effective during games. So the more gamelike the exercise, the more it transfers to an actual game.

I work with Juhani Wahlsten of Turku, Finland. He played in 3 Olympics and 7 World Championships for Finland and is in the IIHF Hall of Fame as a coach/player. He taught me how they conceptualize the game in Finland and everything that follows is based on this organization.

Three Game Situations:

0 - Loose Puck (about 30% of each game)
1 - Team Offense (about 35% if the teams are equal)
2 - Team Defense (35% with equal teams)

Four Game Playing Roles:

Offense
1 - Player with the puck.
2 - Players supporting the puck.

Defense
3 - Player checking the puck carrier.
4 - Players covering away from the puck.

Progression for Hockey Development and Practice Planning

I have just posted a ridiculous amount of coaching ideas that can be used from beginners to pro. You have to decide which exercises or games are best for your level. Ability is more important than age. Too easy bores and too difficult frustrates.

Suggested Progression:

Beginners
A - Introduction to skating, puck handling, shooting.
D - Games mostly SAG.
E - Shootouts and contest.
O - Off-ice should be playing many games to develop athleticism and split vision as well as tumbling.

Third and Fourth Year
A - Skating, shoot, puck handle.
B - Introductory passing.
C - Situation drills. Mostly 1-1, 2-1
D - Games mostly SAG.
E - Shootouts and contests.
G - Goalie basics.
O - Off-ice should be playing many games to develop athleticism and split vision as well as tumbling and games that require decision making. Focus on health related fitness, muscle strength, muscle endurance, cardiovascular fitness, ideal % of body fat, flexibility and continue this at every level.

Fifth and Sixth Year
A - Skating, shoot, puck handle.
B - Passing and partner work.
C - Situation drills 1-1 to 3-3.
D - Games mostly SAG but also full ice scrimmage with rules.
DT - Introduce transition games.
E - Shootouts and contests.
G - Goalie basics crease movement, angles.
T1-T3 - Work on introductory individual offensive and defensive technique.
T2-4 - Introduce team play, breakouts, dzone coverage, forecheck, all based on 1-2-3-4-5 read and react.
O - Off-ice should be playing many games to develop athleticism and split vision as well as tumbling for body awareness and games that require decision making, introduce combatives like wrestling.

Year Seven and Eight
A - Skating, shoot, puck handle.
B - Passing and timing, partner practice ind. offensive and defensive skills.
C - Situation drills 1-1 to 5-5.
D - Games SAG and full ice team play scrimmage.
DT - Transition games.
E - Shootouts and contests.
G - Goalie training.
T1-T3 - Work on individual offensive and defensive technique.
T2-4 - Team play based on 1-2-3-4-5 and power play - penalty killing.
O - Off-ice should be playing many games to develop athleticism and split vision as well as tumbling for body awareness and games that require decision making, combatives like wrestling, competitions that separate the upper and lower body.

Year Nine and Ten (Conventional Wisdom is that it takes ten years to become really proficient at anything and my experience is that this is a true statement.)
A - Skating, shoot, puck handle.
B - Passing and timing, partner practice ind. offensive and defensive skills.
C - Situation drills 1-1 to 5-5.
D - Games SAG and full ice team play scrimmage.
DT - Transition games.
E - Shootouts and contests.
F - Quickness and agility skating.
G - Goalie training
T1-T3 - Work on individual offensive and defensive technique.
T2-4 - Team play based on 1-2-3-4-5 and power play - penalty killing.
O - Off-ice - many sports, begin core training, work on speed, agility, coordination, reaction time and power. Do circuits that use light weights, heavy sticks, Russian Box, competitions that separate the upper and lower body.

Year Eleven and Up
All of the training but learn to do everything at top speed, eliminate extra movement for efficiency. Become a player with 270 degree vision and 360 degree skills. The A and B drills are used for warm-up.

Have a Practice Theme with a Learning Progression.

Rotate practice themes between Game Playing Roles:
1 - Individual offensive skill.
2 - Team offensive skill.
3 - Individual defensive skill.

- Off-ice dynamic warm-up before practice. No static stretching on the ice at the start of practice as static stretching relaxes the muscles. This should be done off ice after practice.

- Skating edges, balance, puck control to activate both the muscles and nervous system using drills or games.

- Drills to practice the skill.

- Put the lesson learned into a game situation.

- End practice with a shoot-out or contest that goes with the practice theme.

Skill Drill Lists

I have compiled lists of drills that coaches can use. Some of the material is in the postings above and there is a series of 10 Best Lists. The key is to find drills and games that suit the level you are coaching. Take the ideas and add them to your own hockey coaching data base. Use the drills and tweak them so they work best with your team. There are ideas here that can be used from the beginner to pro level.
