A200 Russian Olympic Coach Teaches Puck Handling - U17-U20

When I coached in Salzburg, Austria we had 4 teams, U17, U20, Pro second league and Pro Premier League. On M-W morning the pro's had a one hour morning skill session and T-Th the development players had one. There were coaches from every hockey nation and one week a month the IIHF Hall of Fame and former Russian Olympic Coach, Vladimir Yursinov (or Jursinov) ran the skill session. This is a 14 minute video with a warm-up and then a teaching sequence of exercises for puck handling. It is one step at a time and then the skills are combined. Yursi is probably the most famous skills coach in the world. He played for the Soviet Union and was Tikonov's asst. through the years they dominated the World Championships and Olympics. He coached the Russian 1998 Olympic Team and has been asst. coach many times. He speaks some German and I was helping him with his English. I have done a half dozen seminars with him and Juhani in Finland including presenting at the 1997 World Championship Coaching Symposium. It starts off with a minute of Jursi and Pierre Page leading some backward cross-overs and then poke check with balance and then Jursi leads the puck handling sequence where four leave at a time and finish with a shot. He builds the move that Ovechkin uses to slide past the D to get a shot away.

Key Points:
Make hard fakes and sell them to the defender. Separate the movement of the upper and lower body. Create puck handling sequences that flow together. Learn to use the forehand and the backhand and have loose shoulders and the hands away from the body. Don’t over handle the puck.

Description:
A. Warm-up with backward cross-over skating and reach with the stick in a balanced position.
B. Practice moves and fakes while skating down the ice and finish with a shot on net.
1. Fake the slapshot with a convincing fake and finish with the stick hitting the ice.
2. Fake the slapshot and accelerate around the defender on the forehand.
3. Fake the slapshot and move like you are going around on the forehand but quickly pull the puck across to the backhand.
4. Fake a backhand pass or shot and rotate the body in a convincing manner.
5. Fake the backhand and pull the puck across to the forehand.
6. Fake the slapshot and pull the puck to the backhand, fake a backhand and pull the puck to the forehand.
7. Fake a wrist shot and spin on the backhand.
8. Fake a wrist shot and spin to the forehand.
9. Fake a backhand shot-across to the forehand then fake a wrist shot and across to the backhand.
10. Combine the moves.

----------------------------------------------------
This is a great drill. I used it all year with my Novice U-9 team, I would start the drill as a three player breakout, one line acts as the D, the middle line as the Centre, and the third line as the Winger on the boards. I would shoot the puck in, they would go D to Winger, Winger to Centre, and Centre back to me. Once I received the pass from the Centre I would shoot the puck back in, and the three would battle. Keep it high tempo.

I watched the video for this drill. It was in Jihlava, Czech Republic. I sat down with Petr Svoboda the U20 coach and planned the practice and then went over it with him. He ran the practice while I watched and took video of it. I am sounding very tired. I got re-routed on the plane and the 18 hour trip turned into a 34 hour trip. I finally arrived and had to go on the ice an hour later. Between the jet lag and no sleep for two days I never really recovered by the time I filmed this drill. There are a lot of good skating techniques required and you can add many options to this drill.
-------------------------------------------------
B4 Double Cross and Drop - HC Dukla Jihlava U20

D200 - Start 1-1 up to 3-3 - Various Teams - U17 - Pro W

Posted on: April 16 2013 @ 01:59 PM
By: TomM

Content:

We did this game at my skills session last night. The players loved it and there was great intensity. It is an adaption of another game but the difference is that you start 1-1 and players can join if they make a successful give and go from the line-up with an active player. The other adaptation is that you can pass to any player on the blue line. These playes are also jokers who you can pass too once 3 players are active. This keeps everyone in the game and works on role 2 of puck support and role 4 of covering away from the puck. I will get a video when we do it again.

D200 - Start 1-1 up to 3-3 - Various Teams - U17 - Pro W

Key Points:
Players must continually recognize the situation from 1-1 to 3-3. You can pass to any teammate in the line-up. Situations 1-1, 1-2, 2-3, 1-3, 2-1, 2-2, 3-2, 3-3 must be solved by the player.

Description:
1. Each game starts with player 1 from each team. Only one puck is used.
2. Up to 3 players on each team can play.
3. Puck carrier can pass to any teammate on the blue line. A successful return pass allows them to join.
4. Players on the side are active jokers who can be passed too after 3 players are active.
5. Keep going after a goal and the defenders must retreat to half way before checking.
5. Play about 30" shifts and then pass to your player 1 who stats 1-1. Another option is to pass to the goalie or simply leave the puck and the new players race for it.
6. Keep score and add rules like only backhand passes, etc.

Developing Routines to Efficiently Practice

The best Football (soccer) club in the world is Barcelona. They train players in their youth academy. The training is similar to hockey as far as co-ordination, speed, agility, balance, speed, reaction time. They also have ball handling routines that practice all of the moves the world's best players use. It is a great model for training young hockey players. Make up routines that incorporate puck handling moves, fakes, etc. Much like Jursinov does when he leads on ice groups. It can all be done off-ice as well.

This is a way to practice skills and use the ice efficiently. The coaches role is to watch and correct errors. You can't talk people into being skilled but instead they must get a lot of reps with perfect technique.

D5 - Tournament-3 Games-Different Pucks - Youth

Key Points:
The different weights, size, hardness and bounce of the pucks and balls overload the nervous system to adapt stickhandling technique.

This tournament lasted 45 minutes with 9 x 5 minute games. Fun, skill and lots of skating, touches and exercise. Research has shown that cross ice games have 600% more puck touches than a full ice game.

Description:

1. Play two cross ice and one game with one goalie.
2. Games last 5 minutes then the same teams play in a different area.
3. After all have played in each area rotate who they play against.
4. Use different pucks and balls for the first two rounds and then play 1-1 where the defender regroups with the goalie before attacking or the point in the one net game.
5. Keep track of wins.

ABC Games Method and Philosophy - Coach Education

In the ABC coaching method the players learn to play by playing. The skills teach the What and How and are effective especially in Game Playing Role One - individual offensive skill and Game Playing Role Three - individual defensive skill. Teaching team play or co-operation between players in Role Two - Team offensive skill or Role Four - Team defensive skill is more difficult. In a drill you tell the players exactly what to do and they know the situation before it happens. There is little decision making about the situation or creativity required. Games with modified rules mandate that the player must do certain skills and co-operation between players is required. I will list many games here that we use to create situations and practice skills and good habits under game pressure. I am converting these video examples and will add more as I get them done.

D - Games for Skill and Good Habits:

D4 - Three One Zone Games

D4 Three one zone games. Use multiple nets. In this example there were 3 goalies at practice. Have a tournament with one rule for each game and rotate one colour after about 6 minutes.

http://www.hockeycoachingabcs.com/mediagallery/media.php?f=0&sort=0&s=20090802110505180

D4 – Two Second Game

D4 half ice game with the rule that you can only carry the puck max 2 seconds and goals must come on one timers. This game makes puck support crucial and encourages the puck carrier to protect the puck and look around. It is great game for offensive skills and defensive coverage. The players must all get onside on transition. More skilled players can have one second only.

http://www.hockeycoachingabcs.com/mediagallery/media.php?f=0&sort=0&s=20090802110504768

D4 Give and Go Game

Teach playing principles by using rules in game situations. In this game goals only count after a give and go. The coach has the role of enforcing the rule. A give and go is the cornerstone of effective team play.

D4 Games with Modified Rules
Games in one zone with passing, shooting, skating rules or rules for good habits.

http://www.hockeycoachingabcs.com/mediagallery/media.php?f=0&sort=0&s=200807231720538

D4 Game with Goals on Plays From Below the Goal Line

Practice cycling and D joining the play with goals oringinating from plays made below the goal line.

http://www.hockeycoachingabcs.com/mediagallery/media.php?f=0&sort=0&s=20080723172051625

D4 Game with Escape Moves

The player must skate hard to open ice to gain time and space. In this game the players have to make an escape move by pivoting or skating backward with the puck. Later the rule is they must take at least 3 hard strides to open ice before making a play. ‘GOOD HABITS ARE CRITICAL TO EFFECTIVE PLAY.’

http://www.hockeycoachingabcs.com/mediagallery/media.php?f=0&sort=0&s=20090802112351405

D4 Game Variations
At one end the players must get onside on transition and the other end they are playing 2 PASS where the puck must stay in the zone but at least 2 passes must be made before shooting when you regain possession. Once the players understand the basic way the game works the coach can modify rules to encourage skill practice. i.e. only skate backwards.

http://www.hockeycoachingabcs.com/mediagallery/media.php?f=0&sort=0&s=2009080211050878

D4 Game Forehand Pass Only

Game in one zone using only the forehand enhances vision and causes the player to play with balance.

I coach a skill group of U18 U15 combined players a few times a week. Last night we did this game and it worked really well.
------------------------------------------

DT 400 Two Net Game - Joker at Point - U15 B

Key Points:
Players constantly transition from offense to defense and defense to offense. They must fight to get on the defensive side. There are two nets on the goal line at one end of the ice.

Description:
1. Start with the players racing for a puck dumped in by the coach.
2. To be on offense the team must pass to the Joker at the point.
3. Joker can pass or shoot but must stay at the point.
4. Players race across to get open on offense or gain defensive side.
5. Players take turn being the joker.

Curtis Brackenbury called to ask me if I had any video on face-off technique. I have made postings about how to practice face-offs but no video. So I went to google and searched. These are some of the best videos I could find on how to take a face-off and win it. In the average game there is at least one face-off a minute. It is the first loose puck situation and quick transition to offense or to defense is critical.

D4 - Goals Must Originate Below Goal Line - U18 G

By: TomM

Content:

We did this game yesterday and the players were very creative with their plays from below the goal line. I encouraged them to face up ice when possible and move the puck from side to side and use one timer shots. It is great for defenders to practice keeping their head on a swivel and see their man and the puck as well as the goalie tracking the puck by looking over their shoulder. We played 2 on 2 and the play had to be below the top of the circles. In a 2-2 game you have all three game situations. 0 - loose puck, 1 - offense, 2 - defense. You also have all Four Game Playing Roles. On offense, Role 1 - player with the puck and Role 2 - player supporting the puck. On defense Role 3 - player checking the puck carrier and Role 4 - player covering away from the puck. So it is a great game to practice Transition between Game Situations and Game Playing Roles plus all of the individual skills we have been practicing like skating, puck handling, passing, one timers, puck protection, stick on the puck, stick in the lane.
----------------------------------------------------

D4 - Goals Must Originate Below Goal - U18 G

Key Points:
Players learn to protect the puck, pass to themselves off the boards or back of the net and use the net for puck protection. Also change the point of attack. Defenders must see the puck and the player they are covering and goalie must look over their shoulder and move side to side.

Description:
1. Play game situations from 1-1 to 5-5.
2. Situations 3 on 3 or less the players must keep the puck below the top of the circles.
3. To start an attack the puck must be moved below the goal line.
4. When the defenders get the puck they have to get it deep below the goal line before they can score.

DT400 - 2 on 1 x 2 - Jursinov-Wahlsten

1. Red F1-F2 attack vs. Blue D1.
2. Red D1 passively support at the blue line.
3. Blue F1-F2 passively support at the top of the circles.

5. Red F1-F2 and Blue F1 return to the lineup.
6. Blue F1-F2 skate to the far blue line and turn back to attack Red D1 who follows.
7. Red F3-F4 and blue D2 give passive support.
8. Same game rotation happens at the other end with GF1-F2 attacking Bl D1 and GD1 and BF1-F2 support.

https://www.facebook.com/518555930/videos/pcb.711277159782084/10159419175850931/
-------------------------------------------
For those coaches who have large groups at hockey schools or try-outs this is a great transition game to play in smaller areas. Use the F7 Formation with 4 nets (2 on each goal line or 2 at one end and one at the other) and have 4 2/3 ice transition games going on at one time. If the players are not very aware on the ice then have them turn back at the red line instead of skating to the far blue line in order to avoid collisions. Progress from passive support to the new players joining the offense and defense. If you do this a 1-1 creates a 2-2 at each end, 2-1 creates a 3-3, 2-2 a 4-4, 3-2 a 5-5 or by sending out between 1 and 3 F's and 1 or 2 D you create random situations that the players must Read and Respond to. A great benefit to this transition game with active support is that the F's and D have a i.e. 2-1 for a few seconds only and just like in a real game the supporting players catch up to the play.

It is also a great way to teach offensive and defensive team play because the coach can create any situation he/she wants and because the game runs itself and there are no whistles the coach is free to coach. Have one coach with the D and one with the F's and talk to them when they come back. Only stop the game if it is totally off track and then do a short correction and get back to it.

Update on ABC site and new trends in coaching

Posted on: August 09 2013 @ 04:13 PM
By: TomM

Content:

The new season is approaching. I am in the process of converting the video I have with new practice ideas into the 3gpp format that is much more universal than the wmv. I was using. I have so much posted now that about 25% of it is the same drill or game done by a different group. I will add the link to where it is posted before to give for example my U18 girl's doing a 3-0 weave with a regroup at the far end and add a pro team doing the same thing.

I am seeing a trend with the better coaches. "Less is more." So less whistles - more player engagement, example - the players watch to see when it is time to leave. I also see adding skill or situation components to drills. i.e. the shooter circles back and rebounds for the next shooter or give and go passes from the goal line or instead of a 1-0 with a shot and rebound now the shooter plays 1-1 with the next shooter - this can be an active battle or he simply gets in the way and the attacker has to make a move instead of going in non obstructed. In a 1-1, 2-1 etc. situation drill the better coaches allow them to play it out and the drill ends when the goalie freezes the puck, a goal or the D passes to a coach or a player.

You can see this in the last few drills I have posted. Troy Ward doesn't use whistles and the 2-1 ends when the play is finished and the next players watch and then leave. Corey Cross working with NHL players has a 2-0 with zero whistles and the none shooter circle back for a rebound.

Another thing I see is players move pucks after the drill to where they are needed next. Now the asst. coaches can listen to the key points for the next drill and don't appear like they are servants moving pucks around.

Less military command style teaching and more player involvement. This also frees the coach from being a traffic cop and allows him to talk with the players coming back to the line-up about what just happened.

I am seeing more transition games instead of situation drills and more small area games.

Another improvement is to change the situation drills or transition games and SAG to random numbers. So instead of a player knowing that is is a 1-1 have from 1 to 3 players leave on offense and on defense. Now they have to read the play and communicate.

Something I learned this summer working with former WHA, NHL player and asst. coach was to have a time limit on drills. So on a 3-0 middle drive rush they get 10' only to score or if it is against 1-2 or 3 opponents the same thing. This creates urgency and leads to more 'Deliberate Practice.'

A400 - Puck Handling Skills 4 Lanes - Pro

Key Points:

Handle the puck all around the body. Loosen the shoulders and roll the wrists. Stick handle quietly and softly. You must be able to move the puck side to side, so the stick is too long if you cannot do this and too short if you are too bent over to see up ice. Separate the movement of the upper and lower body moving the puck one way and the body the other way. Use head and shoulder fakes.

Description:

1. Rink is separated into four lanes with one two groups starting one way and two the other. (you can use the offside dots and middle dot instead of cones)
2. Players do each exercise down and back two of the lanes on their side of the ice.
3. Do a new exercise each time with a coach or player demonstrating the new exercise.

Refer to the Russian Big Moves postings for more exercises, especially with Jursinov and Yashin. (Yashin - http://www.hockeycoachingabcs.com/mediagallery/media.php?s=20080722140651119 with much looser shoulders and bigger more quiet moves)

A1 Going Back for a Loose Puck - Pro W

Key Points:

Head on a swivel looking before you get the puck. Line up the puck and pick it up as you start turning.

Description:

When a player goes back for a loose puck they need to shoulder check to see where the open ice is. They should turn just as they are getting to the loose puck and have it on the stick as they are turning as opposed to getting the puck and then turning. The coach is a former NHL defenseman.

7. Next group repeat.
8. Create a contest to see how many goals they can score within the time limit.

D400 - Middle Drive 3-3 - 12 Seconds to Score

Key Points:

Create intensity by only giving 10" for the offense to score. Attacking team uses the middle drive.

Description:

1. Start from the red line and attack 3 on 3.
2. Offensive team use the middle drive.
3. Attackers get 10 seconds to score.
4. Coach blow whistle if it takes too long.
5. On transition or whistle pass to the players at the blue line.
6. Team who was on offense now skate to the blue line and defend.

I used this drill and game with NCAA players in the summer. I will get a video of the drill and game when I have my team this year. Putting a scoring time limit on drills or game situations creates an urgency. Have lines compete against each other.

Observing Players Develop Youth to Pro - 4-4

D100 Pro 4-4 Tournament

I posted this as a demonstration of how the top level players keatb good habits and great technique when they are young. They move the puck to the open man, support the puck and get open, have sticks on the puck and in the passing lanes. They usually bury the puck if they have a good chance. Notice how they face the play with the puck by pivoting and turning so they can see everyone. They move to open ice and really protect the puck with their body.

Lots of other good things. If you go to the videos of the 85ers doing a DT100 transition game you can see the player in blue with the white pad on his back. He still skates the same bent over way and does that Gretzky quick turn to gain ice for himself. I coached them when he was 12-13 for two springs. 40 practices 90 minutes each for ten weeks for two years and we went into two tournaments a year. So I coached them 80 practices or 120 hours. Five of the 9 F were still playing pro last year.

They work out every week day with this format to get ready for the season.
- skate around handling the puck.
- some passing, shooting drills run by a coach.
- play a 4-4 full ice tournament and keep score.
- play 3-3 cross ice and keep score.
- do about 10 minutes of skating.

Same player when he was 12. He had a good career in the NHL and played for Canada in the 2018 Olympics. Another small player won the Hobey Baker. He only grew to 5* 6" and had a great career in Europe another drafted in second round and played in the NHL, coached in Sweden and was an NHL head coach and now HC in AHL. Everyone on the team played at least Jr. A. Lots played major junior or NCAA Div. 1 and many played in the minors. They turn 36 this year. A few are still playing in Europe.. The best player was second overall in Bantam draft and quit hockey at 18. They were skilled enough at 12 to do any drill or game that the pro's in the video above can do. Just not as fast.

T3 - C2 Angling 2-1 Wally - Pro W

Key Points:

Defender create an angle from inside to cut the ice in half, deflect the play wide, angle at the back of the inside shoulder with the stick on the puck and finish. Second checker mirror from a little behind.

Description:

1. Coach shoot the puck across the ice on the attacking teams half or dump it softly.
2. Red 1 race for the puck and attack the Blue net.
3. Blue 1 and 2 tag up at the blue line then arc slightly behind the puck carrier to cut the ice in half.
4. Blue 1 close the gap approaching toward the back shoulder with body on body and stick on the puck.
5. Blue 1 rub out Red 1 and Blue 2 pick up the puck.
6. Blue 1 and 2 attack the other way while Red 1 back checks.
7. Repeat with Blue 3 on offense vs. Red 1-2.

* This can also be done as a 1-1 drill to teach the concepts of angling - deflect-steer-angle-finish with body on body and stick on the puck.

T2-4, D4 – Reilly Team Play Rotation

Content:

This is a great game to practice any team play situation. I learned it from Gene Reilly who has coached a lot of college, AHL and European pro hockey.
----------------------

T2-4, D4 – Reilly Team Play Rotation

Key Points:

Practice team play situations at each end. Even or odd man. Leave players in the neutral zone for pp and pk. Situations.

Description:

1. For spectialty teams start with 5-5 at each end with one defensive player in the neutral zone making it a 5-4. You can use any number 3-3 to 6-5.
2. Start green on pp vs. white on pk at one end. On a goal, frozen puck or shot down the ice the green get ready to pk and the white the pp.
3. The other end starts with the white on the offense first.

*The play rotates from end to end.

We used this rotation when working with university, college or pro teams because there are usually at least 8 D and 12 F. In Canada the minor hockey roster is 17 skaters so this only works with smaller numbers. Another option is to use the same game but when the puck is shot down the other group play 4-3 or else 5 offensive players practice the pp for one minute 5-2 and then shoot the puck down.

College men's team.

D200 - 2 on 1 x 2 Race to Score – Pro

Key Points:

Two on one contests. The attackers must get open, pick, shoot, pass etc. to score and the defender must realize it is really a 2 on 2 and cover the attack or pass to the most dangerous player and give the other attacker to the goalie. Lots of talking on defense.

Description:

1. Play a 2 on 1 at each end.
2. Blue attack at one end and Red at the other.
3. The first team to score gets one point.
4. Switch the players after a goal is scored.
5. Contest is to see who can score 5 goals first (or some other total)

*Making the 2-1 a game gives urgency to the attackers to score and the defender to battle.

:
Part A
1. F1 attack D1 from one corner and F2 and D2 support from the other corner.
2. Play a 2-2 until the whistle.

Part B

Content:

ABC Coding System

My diagrams are coded in the ABC format. This is like a library coding to make it easier to find things. Code designed by IIHF Hall of Fame coach Juhani Wahlsten (3 Olympics, 7 World Championships and former captain of Finland National Team)

A - Skating and individual skill

B - Partner skills

C - Game situation drills

D - Games full and SAG

DT - Transition games

E - Shootouts and contests

F – Fitness skating.

G – Goaltender training.

O – Off-ice training.

T - Teaching drills and games where the coach is controlling the situation and giving instruction on individual skills or team play.

The letter tells what is being worked on. The number behind the letter tells what the area of the ice it is being done in.

A1 – cross ice A100 – cross ice with a puck. (ind. Or skating skills cross-ice and then cross-ice with a puck) A3 – around the rink. A300 – around the rink with a puck. Etc.
The same happens with all the drills and games. i.e.

D – Game situation.

D1 – Full ice. D100 – Full ice with extra players on the side or in the box.
D2 – Cross-ice game. D200 with extra players rotating in.
D3 – one cross-ice game and another game from the goal line to the far blue line. D300 with extra players rotating in.
D4 – one zone game and D400 with extra players.
D5 – A D4 game at each end and a D2 game in the neutral zone. D500 with extra players.
D6 – Full ice with two nets on each goal line making two full ice games at once. D600 with extra players.
D7 – ¼ ice games with two nets on each goal line. D700 extra players rotating in.
D8 – Four games at once with two nets on each goal line and two nets near the red line. D800 extra players. (good to have a hose, boards or rink divider along the red line.) Good game formation with smaller players.

DT - Transition Games are coded in a similar way.

Content:

Mike is presenting on ice in Vienna. The players are Austrian so there is a language barrier even though they take english in school. The video also has him teaching pk swarming but I will do another posting on only that. Now pro teams swarm if the offensive team is in a weak attacking position facing the glass battling for a puck. The defenders will outnumber them.
---------------------------------------
T2 Slot Set to Diamond PP Rotation – IIHF Seminar - Babcock

Key Points:

Three players rotate high and create options. Players should set up in one timer shooting positions and be on the off wing for passing.

Description:

Part A
A. Start in a slot set with 1 on the half wall,4 below the goal line, 5 in front.
B. #1 shoot left, 2 left, 3 right. (play to goalies left-opposite if to goalies right)
C. Start with 2 getting a pass in the middle from 1.
D. #2 shoot if it is open.

Part B
E. No shot then 1-2-3 rotate clockwise. 2 pass back to 1 who moves to the middle point while 3 move to a shooting position above the opposite dot.
F. Options for 2. 1-Shoot, 2-Shot pass to 5, 3-one timer for 2 or 3, 4-Restart high rotation.
G. Read what the defenders give and constantly attack the net.

T2-4 - D400 Specialty Team Practice - Pro

I just posted Mike Babcock's on ice demo of the power play. Now I will show a pro team practicing the power play and penalty kill at each end. The rotation is 10 players at each end with the reds vs. the whites. Start with 5 reds on the pp and 4 whites on the pk. The players at the other end wait with 5 whites ready to attack vs. 4 reds. Start and go for about a minute. The coach spots a new puck when needed or stops the play for coaching tips. After about a minute the other end starts and the original end rotates and now 5 whites are ready to go on the power play vs. 4 reds.

I am going to post videos of 5-4, 4-5, 5-3, 3-5 with captions of coaching points and focus on the power play and pk principles of each.

This rotation can be used for 5-4, 5-3, 4-3, 5-5, 6-5.

You can also have a game where one puck is used and when the puck is frozen, a goal is scored or puck cleared the other end goes while the original end switches roles. I will paste that diagram to this posting.

----------------------------
T2 D400 - Power Play 5-4 - Pro

Start with an overload and rotate into a 1-3-1 Diamond.
- Move to off-wing shooting positions on the sides.
- Low player screen when the puck is high.
- Second low player be in a shot pass position on high pucks.
- Second low player move to the mid slot when the puck is low or in the middle, he can also stay in the middle as a short passing option, one time shooter, screen and deflect point shots.

T4-D400 Penalty Killing 4-5 - Pro

Key Points:

Skate in straight lines from the net out. Sticks must deny the most dangerous pass. Stick on the puck when checking. Block shots.

Description:

1. Practice specialty teams at both ends and rotate pp and pk when the puck is at the other end.
2. Coach spot a new puck when the original is out of play.
3. Closest defender check the puck carrier. Pressure when they see numbers or poor control and stay with player when they skate with the puck. Contain is there is complete control in the triple threat position.
4. Skate in straight lines from the net out.
5. Priority is to deny shots from the point and the slot.
6. On passes from mid-point to a player at the side the middle checker can contain or surf to the player on the flank denying the pass back to the point with the stick. Pressure all the way down to the goal line.
7. If the puck is passed back to the mid point and too far to get into the shooting lane then rotate with the player at the top of the triangle.
7. Overload the strong side and give them the player who is two passes away but deny the cross ice pass with sticks in the passing lane.

This is th way to kill before teams adopted the 1-3.

T4 D400 - PK 3-5 vs a Spread PP - Pro

Key Points:

The key is to eliminate one timer shots from the point, from the player in the middle and the back door play.

Description:

1. When the puck is passed down the D in front moves to that side.
2. Weak side high player drop low to take away back door one timer.
3. Strong side high player drop down and front the middle attacker.
4. Strong side high player get in shooting lane when puck is at the point.
5. Weak side high player cover middle and take away cross ice pass with stick.
6. Low player eliminate tip ins in front but don't get tied up.
7. D to D pass everyone shift.

(Right low player in last minute doesn't move out and back and many openings are created. Important to skate in straight lines from the net out to low, middle, high spots)

C3 - 2 on 1 Rush D Join - Defender Slide – Pro

Key Points:

Attack 2 on 1, ‘One high one low, one fast one slow.’ Offense make the first play early to allow a second play. Forehand passes are the most effective, even when on the off wing (Gretzky did this). Defense delay the play as long as possible to create bad shooting angles and backcheckers to get there. Defense slide outside the post if the attacker is deep. On the 3 on 1 don’t slide but stay in the middle, delay the play and jam the trailer if the attack is deep.

Description:

1. D wheel around the net from the corner and pass to F1 or F2 cutting across.
2. D join the attack.
3. Repeat the other way with RD2 passing to RF1-2
4. In this video example the D slides when the attack is deep. They are not passing to the D the first half of the video.
5. Last part of the video they can pass to the D so it is a 3-1 and the D stay on their feet and jam the trailer pass and deny the pass across.

Sequence

1. Practice game situation at one end.
2. Shoot the puck down on a turn over or after a certain time.
3. Practice 5-0 for 60".
4. Shoot puck down to first group who have rotated.

Key Points:

Skate hard and give a target. Pass and shoot while moving. D keep the head up when shooting. Do a tight turn on the delay.

Description:

1. Four D stand on the dots at each end and forwards on each side in the neutral zone.
2. F1 from each side regroup with the D at their end.

Quick feet, give a target, choctaw turn front to back, pass hard, shoot and follow the shot for a rebound, pass and follow the pass, screen, low point shot.

Description:

1. Defense skate forward from the blue line up to the red line and then chocktaw turn backward.
2. Forward leave from the corner and skate around the top the circle and below the other circle then hard up the ice.
3. D get a pass from a forward in the corner and quickly turn up ice and pass to the breaking forward.

5. Forward look for the rebound and then pick up a puck near the net and pass to the D.
6. D take a point shot and the F screen.
7. F and D stay at that end to go the other way.

*With a large group you could have two F and two D go and the D could hinge with each other and a D to D at the point. Another option would do the same drill from each end starting in diagonal corners.

C3 Low 2-2-Regroup-2-2 and 3-2 Pro W

Key Points:

Forwards use quick give and goes, protect the puck. D communicate, play the 2 on 2 man on man and the 3 on 2 with one 2-1 and one 1-1.

Description:

1. Start with 2 D on each blue line and the F's in the corners.
2. Both D go into the zone and defend a 2-2 vs. the forwards out of each corner.
3. Coach spot a puck for the 2 D in the neutral zone and the original forwards regroup with them.
4. Original D follow and defend the 2 on 2 attack.
5. The second set of D go to the other end and restart the sequence defending a 2 on 2 out of the corner.

https://youtu.be/2nTmO49bpG8

*Make this drill more game like by having the D playing the low 2-2 or 3-2 pass to the 2 D waiting in the neutral zone if they break up the play. The coach only put in a new puck on a goal or if the goalie freezes the puck. Then start the regroup in the neutral zone.

This is one of the best games to work on low 1-1, 2-1, 2-2, 3-2, 3-3, cycling, low zone coverage, point shots, screening, shot passes, etc. You can move the players as far up as the dots and back to the blue line. You can start with a small number and add players by doing a give and go with the point. 5 on 5 can be played by having each team with 2 jokers at the point who can be either passive or active defending vs. each other. It is a great game when you have only one goalie but you can rotate them when you have two.
-----------------------------------------------------------

DT400 3-3 Krusel Battling Game - Pro W

2. Pass to the point to transition to offense.
3. Point player must shoot or pass withing 2 seconds.
4. If a point pass goes out the other pointman gets the puck.
5. Either leave the puck in the zone or pass to the coach on a whistle.

2. The high player has the puck and passes low then heads to the net.
3. The low player may walk out and shoot or pass.
4. Only one pass is allowed in this drill.
5. Both players crash the net for a rebound.

T2-4 Low 3-2 Pro W

Key Points:

D must decide whether to pressure or contain, always from the defensive side. Forwards create space and time by skating and passing quickly while using give and goes and changing the point of attack in a triangle. D continually read where the most dangerous play is and have sticks on the puck and in the passing lanes.

Description:

1. This can be done at either one or both ends.
2. Start with the 3 F's passing the puck around the top of the circles and the 2 D in front of them.
3. A forward shoots and the 3 on 2 starts.
4. Give the attackers a time limit to score in order to create urgency.
5. Next line of forwards get in position for a breakout pass from the D.
6. A goal, time running out or a breakout ends the drill.

DT200 Active Jokers - Side and Ends - U18 G

Key Points:
Quick passes and shots are needed. Face the puck in an athletic ready position. Protect the puck.
I did this game last night and it worked really well. We kept score and the losing team did a push-up for every goal they lost by. I like it because the players are ALL active and it requires quick thinking and quick action. We had 16 skaters and two goalies so 4 played on each team and 4 were Jokers. Each team had one Joker behind each net and one on each side.

Description:
1. Half of each colour play and half are jokers.
2. Each team have a joker behind the net and on each side.
3. Jokers can shoot or pass but not join the play.
4. Jokers can check jokers.
5. Switch every 30" and use the same puck.
6. To transition to offense the team must pass to a Joker.

D9 - Multi-Net Game - Youth

Key Points:
Those coaches who come to the site a lot know that I coach a school skills class twice a week. They have one hour of ice time and we do skills the first half and games for skill, creativity and game sense the second half. This year I have about a dozen kid's ages 11-14. There are 3 girl's who play ringuette and three beginner boy's who don't play on teams. The other 6 boy's are pretty good. Two play AA with one leading the league in scoring, another is a little smaller but really good and plays a level below and the other 3 boy's are better than average.

I usually bring out 4 small nets and there are two big ones on the ice. Today's game were 3 equal ability players at each small net, The nets were along the side boards at alternate side and line up with the hash, blue line, other blue line and hash. They played 1-1 with one resting at the far boards. Play offense, defense, pass to the resting player who goes onto offense vs. the player who played defense and the original defender rest. I then moved the nets across from each other and they played 3 on 3 with the two weakest groups and two strongest groups. We finished with the game below using the 4 small and two big nets (layed face down and players have to hit the top mesh only to score.) Start with two at each net and rule that each has to score before scoring again.

Implement any rule modification like types or number of passes, how many goals one player can score, etc.

Description:

1. Place nets around the rink and allow space for players to skate behind.
2. Divide the players up into equal teams at each net.
3. Use one puck or if multiple pucks leave them in the net after a goal.
4. Keep score.
5. Players defend their own net and can score on all other nets.

*If the skill level is uneven rule is all must score before you can score again.

C3 Double Regroup 2-1 - Pro

Key Points:

Give a target for the passes, face the puck, pass while skating, make the first pass early on the 2-1, D co-operate with the goalie to make it a 2-2 and don't allow a second play late. D slide outside the post if a pass across is the only play.

Description:

1. Players line up along the boards on both sides in the neutral zone.
2. Start with F1 and F2 one touch passing with D1.
3. F's skate through the neutral zone and regroup with D2.
4. F's attack 2 on 1 vs. D1.
5. F3 and F4 repeat by one touch passing with D2 and regrouping with D3.

*If there are at least 8 D you could use this sequence and have two 1 on 1's at the same time in opposite directions.

I have been to many International Coaching Symposiums and at most they have coaches contribute drills under certain topic headings and then they puck a booklet together with the ones they consider the best. I came across the booklets from two of the conferences and put the drills together in a pdf. Coaches from all over the hockey world come to these conferences, so the drills are from many places and levels of coaching.

T1-2 - Breakout Options – Wheel, Go, Counter - U18 F

Key Points:
Principles for the Wheel, Go and Counter, with Terry Johnson a former NHL Defenseman. The key is skating hard to force the checker to commit and then choosing the option.

I had a former NHL defensive defenseman work with my defense on breakout reads. In my opinion it was terrific. He taught details like skate toward your post at a 45 degree angle to draw the defender then cut back and many other reads and counters. I am breaking down the video because he started with one D vs. zero pressure, then he pressured and then two D and then incorporated 4-0 amd 5-0/ Great stuff/ The first two videos have been posted.

Description:
1. Coach shoot the puck in and the D skate to the puck and then at a 45 degree angle to force the checker to cross over.
2. Wheel behind the net, cut up near the far post and pass to the point for a shot on net.
3. Critical point is to make the checker do what you want them to. If you skate to where you are going to pass first then the checker can get a good angle and steal the puck.
4. Go by skating hard one way and then tight turn away from pressure. Pass to the point for a shot.
5. Counter when the checker doesn’t chase behind the net.
6. Coach shoots the puck in and the player drive skates behind the net and then tight turns to come back the original way.
7. Pass to the wing who skates out and passes across to the point for a shot on net.

T1-2 Breakouts vs. Checker - U18 F

Posted on: November 09 2013 @ 02:57 PM
By: TomM

Content:

T1-2 Breakouts vs. Checker – U18 F

The second stage of the sequence is for the D to read and turn away from the pressure and make the pass.

Key Points:

The defender must drive skate when they get the puck and read whether the checker chases behind, goes in front etc. Skate at a 45 degree angle to the net to make the checker cross-over and decide to wheel, go(cut back) or counter.

Description:

1. Shoot the puck into the corner and the coach or player gives pressure.
2. Shoulder check and read inside pressure then skate at a 45 degree angle toward the net to make the checker cross-over.
3. Tight turn away from pressure and pass to a player on the boards who passes to another player at the point who shoots.
4. Counter by skating behind the net and out the same way if the checker doesn’t chase behind.
5. Read if the checker is taking away the middle or the boards and pass to the open player.
6. Use a backhand pass if you need to miss the defenders stick in the passing lane or to protect the puck from a checker.
7. Quick feet make everything possible. If everyone is covered then carry the puck up the middle.

T1-2 Tight Turn-Quick up 2-0 –U18 F

The third stage of teaching the breakout reads includes the forwards who finish with a 2-0-1 rush (Goalies are people too.)

Key Points:

The key is to drive skate at a 45 degree angle toward the net and then do a tight turn to the outside when the forward crosses over.

Description:

1. Coach pass to D1.
2. D1 drive skate at 45 degree angle to net and the coach pressure from the inside.
3. D1 tight turn outside and pass to F1 on the boards.
4. F1 pass across to F2 and they attack 2-0.
5. Repeat with the coach passing to F2 on the other side.

T1-2 D to D and Up - 2-0 - U18 F

Posted on: November 10 2013 @ 04:08 PM
By: TomM

Content:

T1-2 D to D and Up - 2-0 – U18 F

The fourth stage of teaching the breakout is the D to D pass that progresses into reading whether to do a D to D or draw the forechecker toward the middle and then tight turn and pass up to the wing. Again the key is to skate at a 45 degree angle toward the net and make the read. It is important for the D to stagger by hinging instead of being parallel which makes it easy for the forechecker to intercept the pass. Two forwards come back for the pass and shouldn't get too close to the D. Stay at least a third or half zone up ice.

Key Points:

The key is to drive skate at a 45 degree angle toward the net and then do a tight turn to the outside when the forward crosses over. Read the forecheck which is the best play.

Description:

1. Coach pass to D1.
2. D1 drive skate at 45 degree angle to net and the coach pressure from the inside.
3. D1 pass across to D2 who hinges behind.
4. D2 pass to F2 who passes across to F1 and they attack 2-0.
5. Repeat with the coach passing to F2 on the other side.
6. Add the D read the play and either tight turn outside and pass up if D2 is covered or pass D to D.

T1-2 Breakout D to D 3-0 and T1-2 Breakout D to D 5-0 - TJ U18 F

Content:

T1-2 Breakout D to D 3-0 – T1-2 Breakout D to D 5-0 - TJ U18 F

The fifth and final stage of this breakout sequence is adding a centre and attacking 3-0. Terry has the D drive skating at 45 degrees to the net and then pass D to D. He demonstrates how the centre should mirror the puck from about a stick length behind giving a target. They practice this and then they go D1 to D2 back to D1 when the read is the passing lanes are taken away.

T1-2 Breakout D to D 3-0 – U18 F

Key Points:

Centre must mirror the D from the middle skating parallel and give a target. Stay behind the D so he can skate into the puck. D must drive skate when they get the puck.

Description:

1. Coach pass to D1 who drive skates at a 45 degree angle to the net.
2. D1 pass across to D2 who hinges up ice.
3. D2 pass to the C.
4. Forwards attack 3-0 at the far end.
5. Add D1 to D2 back to D1.
6. Add coach cover one of the D so they either go D to D or tight turn and up to the wing.

DT - Transition Game Presentation - IIHF Seminar – Wahlsten - Jursinov

Two IIHF Hall of Fame coaches, Russian Olympic coach Vladimir Yusinov and Juhani Wahlsten of Finland show various transition games to coaches at an IIHF coaching symposium.

Coaches in Europe tend to use more transition games than we do in North America. It is the natural progression from a drill with many pucks and the play ending artificially. Transition games use one puck and you play out the situation until a goal, frozen puck or a breakout pass and the play goes the other way. Players join during the rush and give either active, passive or active and passive support. You can basically create any situation you want to work on and the coach is free to coach instead of being like a traffic cop blowing a whistle. Simply talk to the players when they return to the line-up without stopping the play.

It is a total mystery to me why transition games are not a key tool in running effective practices with most NA coaches.

Practices in general look quite different. Less whistles and more player decision when to start the next rep. Practice in block or units of 5, more games and transition games. Generally more decision making and puck handling. Another thing I have noticed in my many trips to Europe is that in NA players practice offense working on defense and in Europe a lot of defense is learned while the team is working on offense. So we tend to practice defense a lot more and passively learn offense and visa-versa, if you get my drift.

A300 Tight Turns-Three Hard Strides-Shot - U18 F

Key Points:

Tight turn towards the boards and take three hard strides. Shoot while skating.

Description:

1. All of the players have a puck and skate around the rink.
2. On the coaches whistle turn towards the boards and take three hard strides and then slow up.
3. Next whistle tight turn toward the boards and go the other direction.
4. Shoot at both ends.
5. Progress to blowing the whistle twice, so the players go both ways quickly to practice puck protection.

*Another option is 5 hard strides.

* Over the years I have found this simple drill to transfer to Game Play right away.

Key Points:

Great way to practice 3-2 rush with F3 trailer or the Middle Drive. Defenders must decide where the 2-1 and 1-1 are.

Description:

1. Three F’s attack two D.
2. Three F from defending team and 2 D from attacking team follow the play and give passive support high in the zone.
3. On transition defenders pass to the forwards who attack 3-2 the other way.

*Coach can focus on the type of attack and creating a 2-1 on one defender or simply speed and doing a middle drive. An option to add is have one supporting forward play a 3-3 low with the original defenders.

6. Two Blue D wait in nzone.
7. Three RF who supported now attack the in the other direction vs. two Blue D.
8. Three Blue F support, continue flow.

*In the symposium handout it says that the 3 F backckeck and give support to the 2 D in the defensive zone after attacking but it isn't what they do in the video. You can do this but it is a different flow of attack-backcheck-defend-leave instead of support-defend-attack-leave.

Organization Note: In order to play a continuous 3-2 transition game you need at least 6 F and 4 D on each team. You can use the same flow from a 1-1 to 1-2 up to this 3-2 to 3-5. Whatever situation you decide to use you must have 4x more players. So this 3F on 2D requires 12 F and 8 F. It is also best to use only two colours and put half the F and half the D in each.

B5 - Shots From 3 Lanes

Key Points:
This is a good warm-up drill for goalies and an effective way to practice taking a slap shot at full speed. Make sure you allow enough time between shooters for the goalie to prepare for the next shot.

Shoot before the top of the circle. Follow the shot a few strides for the good habit and then return to the line on the outside so you don't get hit with a shot.

Description:

1. Line up in three lanes.
2. Start with 1 pass to 2.
3. Allow 2 to cross the blue line and then 1 leave and get a pass from 3.
4. Wait for 1 to cross the blue line then 3 leave and get a cross ice pass from 4.
5. Repeat 5 to 4, 6 to 5, 7 cross ice to 6.
6. Restart sequence with the first pass 1 to 3.

* Diagram has this drill. Second drill is also good but different.

T2 - Breakout Practice Progression - TJ

I think former NHL defenseman Terry Johnson did such a great job developing a teaching sequence focused on the D making breakout reads and decisions that I put the posting together into a booklet. I have seen a huge improvement in my D creating space for themselves and making better decisions since TJ had them run through this sequence in a few practices. (TJ also coached a lot of university and minor hockey).

It isn't pro's but my U18 girls demonstrating with Terry creating pressure in each situation. Coaches at any level can use this progression.

2. D1 drag and shoot while F2 screen and F1 go to the net for a tip or rebound.
3. F1 get a new puck and pass to D1.
4. D1 fake a shot and pass straight down to F1.
5. F1 skate at the net to become a threat and pass across to F2 who slides back to the far post.

I watched PeeWee U 12 practice last night, and the Coaches ran a great practice. Lots of transition drills, the kids were having a great time, and the Coaches seemed very relaxed, compared the ther Bantam practice that was going on next door. Have a look at the PDF of one of the transition drills they ran, I wish I could explain it better, the kids sure knew how it was run.

Team Play Ideas

One of my friends was just appointed as the Head Coach of a IIHF third division country. They will be in the world championships for their group in the spring. He has never been a head coach before but was a long time captain of the team and asked me to give him some team play ideas. I have put together links to the type of systems that I like to use. I am not a big 1-2-2 fan and instead use a forecheck that has worked a lot better for me and the one we used when I was with the Red Bulls in Austria.

Scoring Goals

I am starting to work on the shooting and scoring section of the Swedish material. It starts with the concept that the 'puck has eyes' and illustrates the 'Five Scoring Areas' that work very well vs. a stand-up goalie. They are now a rare breed. Another Swede Thomas Magnusson gave a great presentation at an IIHF coaching symposium that I attended in Heidelberg, Germany 2010. He outlines how to score vs. the modern day goalie and where the goals come from. Only the Swedes and Finns study the game with such detail.

D200 Game 1-1 to 3-3 - RB Pro

Key Points:
Offensive player use moves, change of pace, etc. to try and score.
Defensive player maintain defensive side with a tight gap.

Description:

1. Coach shoot the puck in and one player from each team compete.
2. Short shifts of about 20".
3. On change either the coach shoots in another puck, regroup with the goalie or pass to a teammate.

Cross ice game of 1-1 to work on:
a. Role One the player with the puck - puck protection, escape moves, shooting quickly, rebounds.
b. Role 3 the player checking the puck carrier - always stay on the defensive side, maintain tight gaps, stick on the puck, tie up the stick on the rebound and transition to offense.

2. When defender gets the puck he must regroup with joker at the point and a play to the low joker must be made before a shot can be taken.

B5 - Shots From 3 Lines - with Give and Go U18 F
