A - How the Russian Learn to Stick Handle

I have posted this before but thought I should put it here because it goes well with the Russian Big Moves warm up since I learned that from Juhani Wahlsten who watched Jursinov while he was coaching in Turku, Finland. They are old adversaries, playing each other in the Olympics, coaching vs each other internationally and both are in the IIHF Hall of Fame. Now they are close friends and share ideas on how to coach. I am lucky enough to be let in on the methods by Juuso and then I coached with Jursi and Austria. He came one week a month to do skills sessions M-W with the pro's and T-Th with the development group.

IIHF Hall of Fame Russian Coach Teaches U20 and U17 Players Moves and Fakes
Vladimir Jursinov is the most famous skills coach in the world. He has helped over 65 players get to the NHL. He was Tikhonovs assistant with the Soviets, the 98 Russian Olympic coach and assistant every Olympics up to 06. Here is how the Russian learn to puck handle. It is U20 and U17 aged players. The ones with the fancier helmets are pro players.

. Fake a slapshot and go around opponent on the backhand side.

. Fake a slapshot and go around opponent on the forehand side.

. Fake a slapshot and then do a backhand tight turn around opponent.

. Fake a slapshot and reach out like you are going around the opponent on your forehand and then pull the puck quickly to your backhand and go around opponent.

- Handle the puck all around your body with loose shoulders and head fakes.

- Watch the videos to see many more options.

A8-D8 - Puck Handling, Individual Practice and Small Area Games - Youth

In this video the players are instructed in the Russian Puck Handling Routine, they go into small groups to practice the technique and the ice is divided into 4 areas in the D8 Formation using dividers. There are 8 nets for small games. Each game has a rule modification so the players practice skills like escape moves or good habits. Now I add the fake shot sequence that is in the Jursinov video. I worked with him the season after this hockey school.

C3 - 5 on 2 Forecheck - 4 Attack - RB Pro

Key Points:
Overload the strong side with one player on the weak side for a one- timer or to change sides.

This is the same drill as the last posting but I am focusing on the forecheck. It is a combination of the Torpedo and left wing lock but has some basic principles. A. There are always 4 on the strong side with 3 forechecking and the LD supporting. B. There is always a player on the weak side to back door, one time shoot or pass across to change sides on the attack. C. Players are accountable to cover if they count 4 in front of them or 3 already attacking on the strong side. D. The weak side LW or RD must read that there is danger of a turnover and drop back. E. Everyone backchecks hard thru the middle on turnovers.

Description:
Forecheck
1. Overload on the strong side.
2. Three F's on the left side and RD on weak side.
3. C, RW and RD overload right side, LW on weak side.
4. RD and LW must read and drop back if turnover is possible.

This is an effective way to practice team play. The attacking D plays defense vs the next 5 attackers.

B300 Practice Stations-Skill-Games-HC Dukla Jihlava

Key Points:
Coaches progress from stationary technique instruction to cross ice movement doing the skills.
When insrtucting shooting, insist that they follow the shot for a rebound.

Description:
1. Ice is divided into cross ice stations with a coach at each station.
2. This formation can be used for skating, passing, shooting, checking or any technique.
3. Move from stationary instruction to movement.
4. Games can also be played cross ice or at one net.

http://hockeycoachingabcs.com/mediagallery/media.php?f=0&sort=0&s=20100830110013788

I used this stations practice formation for the first part of most on ice sessions. The group was from 8-14 years and we divided them into age and skill groups. One coach at each group reviewed what we had done off ice or in previous practices. This is a great formation to utilize the ice for giving instruction in small groups and progressing from static to moving to games. We progressed from skating to puck handling, to shooting, to passing.

8. Options are to shoot and then come out and defend the next attack or to be a deep passing option to give and go for a one timer shot.
* In the video we alternate sides but only use one net at each end. During the camp I did it both ways; one net and two nets at each end.

Description:
D100 Full Ice x 2 (In this practice there are 2 games happening at the same time with 4 goalies and 2 groups. It is a Czech U20 practice)

1. Start by attacking 1-1.
2. New player give passive support above circles.
3. On breakout pass to supporting player while original attacker backcheck.
4.Supporting player can take away the puck if it comes above the circles.
5. Backcheck hard and tie up the stick on rebounds.
7. Battle for loose pucks.
8. Backchecker make sure there is no second shot and goalie clear the rebound.

This is a great way to practice back pressure quick ups to the forward, taking sticks in the slot, attacking quickly. It is a core game that I like to play the day before a regulation game because it reviews so many good habits.
