    T2-4 – BO-RG-FC – 3 F – Tomas – U18 F

    Key Points:

Game like passing as you practice the forecheck and breakouts at the same time. Coach can focus on one aspect of the game or have a coach with the D, one with the F and one with the G. This could be the 'Magic Warm-up Drill.'

    Description:

    1. Players leave from inside the four blue lines.
    2. Forwards dump the puck into their own end and forecheck the other defense.
    3. Red F1-F2-F3 cross the red line and dump the puck in so the goalie must handle it.
    4. Red D1-D2 go back for the puck.
    5. White F1-F2-F3 forecheck; F1-F2 within a stick length and F3 mirror.
    6. Add tasks like Red D1-D2-F1-F2-F3 breakout and everyone must touch the puck up ice.
    7. Red F1-F2-F3 shoot the puck in and forecheck vs. White D1-D2.
    8. White F4-F5-F6 follow the play into the zone and breakout with white D1-D2.
    9. Continue this flow end to end.

    * In this video example they are dumping in at one end and regrouping at the other because the goalies are working at one end. The description is for dumping in at each end.

    5. Skate up and back to the blue line and top of the circle three times.
    6. Cross the red line and 1 skate straight and shoot, 2 skate to the middle lane then down and shoot and 3 to the wide lane and shoot.
    7. 5-6-7 repeat from the other diagonal corners.

*Add skating and puck handling tasks: i.e. puck only on the forehand or backhand of the blade, quick hands and quick feet, face the other end always, chocktaw front to back transition turn, Crosby turns, backward skating, etc. Also vary the kind of shots taken: wrist, backhand, snap, slap and you can even incorporate exchanging give and go with players in the corners.

T2 – Skills for C Low and Slow Breakout – Pro

    Key Points:

Centre or low forward has to swing low and slow to support the wing on the boards for a one touch redirect pass. This is effective against a team pressures the pass to the boards. A pass to the centre is the most effective because he is between the dots and has a lot of options with the puck. Players have to help each other by communicating on the ice.

    Description:

    1. Forwards at dots outside the blue line pick up wide rims from the coach on both sides, switch.
    2. F1 and F2 leave. F1 pick up the rim and coach pressures down the wall.
    3. F2 swing low and slow for the touch back from F1.
    4. F1-F2 cross and drop in the neutral zone, turn back and attack 2-0.
    5. Coach in front of the net spots a puck below the goal line three times for the defense.
    6. D1 skate up to the blue line and back, shoulder check to read coach pressure from behind.
    7. Puck one D1 fake-turn inside and pass to the coach in front then skate out to the blue line.
    8. D1 shoulder check, fake, tight turn outside and pass to the coach on the wing.
    9. D1 shoulder check and drive the back of the net then cut tight to the net up the middle and pass.
    10. D2 repeat on the other side and D1 switch sides.
    11. D1 go back for the puck in the corner under close pressure from the coach and D2 support.
    12. D1 has the option of passing to the wing or behind while facing the glass.
    13. D1 shoulder check and D2 support the outlet either behind the net or in the corner.
    14. D1-D2 skate out to the blue line then back for the puck once in each corner.
    15. Half the D and half the F at each end now combine the breakout skills 3-0 BO, 2-1.
    16. Coach spot a puck for D1 to rim.
    17. F1-F2 come into the zone from the blue line.
    18. Coach pressure down the boards, F1 take rim and touch back to F2 who swings ‘low and slow’.
    19. F1-F2 skate out to the far blue line then cross and drop and attack 2-1 vs. D1 at each end.

T2-4 – Continuous Three Team Game – Passive Resistance – Pro

    Key Points:

Practice offensive and defensive team play with passive resistance where players practice positioning in both situations. You can also play this as a live scrimmage and use the same rotation for PP and PK. To work on PK have either 3 or 4 players waiting in the neutral zone.

    Description:

    1. Start with a dump in and 5-0 breakout.
    2. Defending team wait in the neutral zone and go back to breakout on the dump-in.
    3. Offensive team forecheck with a wide 1-2-2 and a 2-1-2 when F1 creates pressure.
    4. Use various breakout options as; boards, reverse, quick to C, C touch back to Wing, etc.
    5. Three forwards and two defensemen wait in the neutral zone when the puck enters each end.
    6. The new players go back for the dump-in and breakout.

    T4 – 5-5 Contain-Pressure Defensive Zone Coverage – Pro

    Key Points:

Everyone must see the puck and see their man. Stay on the net side (defensive) of the player they are covering. Sticks on the ice and in the passing lanes. It is a combined ‘man to man-zone defense’. All defenders must cover one player. Closest defender to the puck on tight, ‘Body on body and stick on the puck.' next closest a stick length away, third closest half way, fourth and fifth closest maintain a ‘man-you-puck triangle’, see the puck and your man with the stick in the passing lane. Weak side defending forward pick up F3 if he is high in the slot.

    Description:

Part One – Defensive Zone Rotation Contain then Pressure (Swarm)

    1. 5 defenders start from the blue line with a coach in each corner.
    2. Coach pass the puck to the corner and defenders skate into the zone. ‘Man on Box Behind.’
    3. Read offensive control and play ‘man to man-zone defense.’
    4. D1 on puck, D2 net front, F1 support D1 low, F2 mid slot, F3 puck side point.
    5. Read no offensive control so pressure and outnumber the offense – ‘Swarm.’
    6. D1 on hard, D2 move to goal line, F1 close support for D1, F2 net front coverage, F3 move to boards above the hash marks. D2 and F3 intercept any low or high rim.
    7. Pass to coach, players skate out – pass to the coach in the other corner – the 5 defenders rotate.
    8. D2 to corner, F1 skate in front and to corner, F2 cover puck side point, F3 mid slot.
    9. Repeat the contain and pressure, ‘ Swarm’ walk through.
    10. After each group has practiced a few times go live.
    11. Repeat the walk through in both corners then skate out and pass to 5 attackers and defend 5-5.

Part Two – 5-5 Walk Through then Live

    1. Set up in one zone with 5 attackers and 5 defenders.
    2. Coach pass the puck to the corner and all 5 defenders rotate.
    3. D1 on puck, D2 net front, F1 support D1, F2 mid slot – cover high offensive OF3, F3 puck side point.
    4. Pass puck to strong side point and all rotate.
    5. F3 up to point, F2 slide to mid slot, F1 cover high offensive OF3, D1 and D2 be half way or box OF1-OF2.
    6. After the low and high walk through play 5-5 live.
    7. Communicate to switch between ‘contain and pressure’ defending.
    8. Coach spot a new puck if the play ends right away.
    9. F1 pressure the puck at the hash marks or half wall and D1 support.
    10. F3 drop down to prevent a high walk-in if F1 is beaten on the wall.

    T4 – Defensive Zone Walk Through – RG 5-5 – Pro

    Key Points:

Review defensive zone rotation. Lots of communication helps everyone to make good decisions. Use controlled skating towards the puck carrier. Always defend from the net side. Stick on the ice in the passing lane and closest checker play with ‘body on body and stick on the puck.’ Goalie can see everyone so it is important he communicates loudly.

    Description:

    1. Players start from the neutral zone with a coach in each corner.
    2. Coach one pass to coach two in corner and 5 players defend.
    3. Coach two pass to coach three in other corner and 5 defenders rotate.
    4. Defending 5 skate out and pass to 5 players waiting in the neutral zone.
    5. Play 5 on 5.
    6. Coach one spot a new puck if the play ends quickly and continue playing 5-5.
    7. Rotate so the other 5 players walk through the defensive zone coverage.
    8. Walk through the contain ‘box plus one’ and the pressure ‘swarm.’
    9. Do this at both ends if you have 20 skaters for 5-5 or 16 for 4-4.
    10. If you have less skaters you can do it at one end with a defend-attack-rest rotation.

    https://www.hockeycoachingabcs.com/videos/watch/t4-defensive-zone-walk-through-rg-5-5-pro/

    https://www.facebook.com/518555930/videos/pcb.734233647486435/10159528768035931

If you have less than 4 lines you can have the walk through then the original attackers walk through then pass to the players waiting behind the red line. After all players have done the walk through make it a continuous transition game of Attack-Defend-Breakout-Rest.

DT400 – Two Thirds Ice Game with Passive Support – College W

    Key Points:

Play 3-3 in the one end with the offense trying to score and defense defending and then making a breakout pass.

    Description:

    1. Black 1-2-3 attack Red 1-2-3 from the far blue line.
    2. Black 4-5-6 follow the play into the zone above the circles.
    3. On a goal, frozen puck or change of possession Black 1-2-3 pass to Black 4-5-6.
    4. Black1-2-3 return to the line at the far blue line.
    5. Black 4-5-6 skate with the puck to the far blue line and turn back.
    6. Red 1-2-3 follow the play into the neutral zone.
    7. Black 4-5-6 attack Red 1-2-3.
    8. Red 4-5-6 follow to the top of the circle to support.

    * Great game with only one goalie or a goalie working with the coach at one end.

    * Play this transition game from 1-1 to 5-5 with even numbers like 3-3 or vary the situation like 3-2 then 2-3.

    * Have modified rules to practice individual or team skills. i.e. Goals only count on one touch shots or there must be three passes made before shooting.

    F – D400 – 1-1 x 2 x 2 – Pro

    Key Points:

Play 20” at each to simulate a 40” shift. Protect the puck and go to the net. Could be done 2-2 with a large group or 1-1 at one end and 2-2 at the other so 6 players are going at once so they have a proper work/rest ratio. Simulate your teams w/r in games. If you have 4 lines then 1/3 and if you have 3 lines then 1 time work and 2 times rest.

    Description:

    1. Players line up at each end in two lines at the top of the slot.
    2. Start with each player taking a shot.
    3. Race for a loose puck and play 1-1 with both players trying to score.
    4. Coach blow whistle after 20” and players switch end and race for a loose puck.
    5. Battle to score at the other end.

    * Defend with toe caps facing the attacker from the defensive side and stick on the puck.

    * Attacker must go to the net and create space with quick stick and body fakes.

    * Great game like battle for fitness and individual offensive and defensive skills.

    T2-4 – D400 – 6 on 5 – Pro

    Key Points:

Outnumber the defenders to win loose pucks. Take away rims with a high triangle at the top, one player on each side and one in the middle. Screen and take away goalies eyes whenever a shot is possible. Reset the attack by putting the puck behind the net and moving it low to high. Set up a 1-3-2 diamond when the puck gets to the middle point. When the puck is at the half wall one attacker support on the strong side goal line. The key is to produce rebounds and outnumber the defenders in the slot.

    Description:

    1. Start with a face-off and the extra forward higher along the boards on the strong side.
    2. Defenders line up like 5-5 with D along the boards.
    3. Allow the offense to win the draw.
    4. Move into the diamond power play 1-3-2 when the puck gets to the midpoint.
    5. Defend from the net out with a diamond and the closest player challenge the puck carrier.
    6. Defenders do not get tied up with the player in front but defend in a diamond.
    7. Defend with sticks in passing lanes and shin pads in front of the shot.
    8. Puck on wall the strong side D be a stick length from low attacker on the goal line.

    T2 – D4 – Torpedo 6-5 – U18 F

    Key Points:

Forward play forward and defense play the right back, middle back and left back on their forehand sides to keep the puck in.

    Description:

    1. Always two forwards on a loose puck and if they have two battling then 3 forwards.
    2. Pinch on both sides with the Middle Back filling behind.
    3. Left and Right back must keep the puck in on wide rims.
    4. Reset when under pressure by putting the puck behind the net.
    5. Three backs play high on the 1-3-2, one F take goalies eyes, one shot pass or tip, one mid slot.

    * This is the style we played when I coached college hockey and when I was with the Red Bulls in Austria we had a similar strategy. You get continuous pinching on both sides and it is very difficult to rim the puck out.

Specialty Team Scrimmage and Principles of the Power Play and Penalty Kill

We had a specialty team scrimmage. Former Olympic Women's team asst. coach and asst. to Dave King when he coached the men's National team Wally Kozak is my mentor and these are his thoughts.

    AAA/AA Special Teams Scrimmage

Format of scrimmage: It was a 75' ice time. 10' warm-up, 10' 5-4, 10' 4-5, 10' 5-3, 10'-5-3, 10' 6-5, 10' 5-6. After each segment the clock is reset and the players come to the bench for a 3' review with the coach and then play for 7'. Straight time.

Key to success: Special teams are “Special” teams within a team.

PP Read and Act – Adjust to the PK – Think a pass ahead -Take what they give

    you.

    “Play Chess not Checkers”

Match players skills and traits to PP areas; point, 1?2 boards, corner, net, and slot.

70% of PP goals are a product of point shots , tips, rebounds

PP Get pucks through to the net or sticks

Work harder on the PP,” Gang Mentality”

PP possession overrides position.” Swarm to get and keep the puck.

PP D pinch down to the goal line on PP

Win Face Offs or… get the puck. It starts with Possession. Every second counts.

    P K rules:

    1. Stop and Start St line skating.

    2. Lead with the stick. Body in the shooting lane. Look big.

    3. Busy sticks – in the passing lanes.

    4. Swivel the head –

(Same rules for 5 vs 5 D zone play)

Clear Pucks while skating on Forehand

Soft Rims allow for possession to clear pucks

    Special Teams:

Here are some lessons learned from watching special teams that May benefit any coach of any team. Win the Special team's Game and you will often win the game.

    Power Play:

    1. Break out
    > D sets up behind net (if possible) (wheel if not)
    >The D behind the net must fake one way and go the other if the C does not come behind. This creates time and space to carry and pass the puck using the open lane as the PK fore checkers react to the fake.
    > Timed swing in corners by D and C (or low Fw's)
    > IF C comes behind net they may leave or take the puck and the D and FW use each other to move the puck up ice.

    2. PP entry
    > Always try to score on direct attack – take advantage of the time and space.
    > Try to set up at the hash and provide support ( Out # = Possession over rides Position) to get and keep the puck
    >D pinch to the goal line on PP

    3. PP execution
    >use a give and Go and roll to create options low or high .
    >take what they give you. (walk out of corner, walk the seam, pass to point)
    >Possession over rides position. Outnumber, out battle/ race to keep the puck.
WIN THE FACE OFFS> Vs box > get pucks through from he point.

? Vs Semi active – Read and act – give >go >roll > etc Smart point shots.
? Deceptive quick puck movement. Touch passes.
? Vs Pressure – quick deceptive puck movement – low to high or high to low pass. Short pass >long pass. Touch pass.

    Penalty Kill

    1. Forecheck
    > Think scoring when given a chance. The PP does not expect it.
    > Use your system ? swing and roll ?

    PK /PP successful tips:
    1. Pressure on entry – do not let them set up easily..
    2. Use soft not hard rims to get the puck at the 1/2 boards to clear it. Avoid hard rims. Hard rims on PK will be a give away to their D. Few Teams will pinch their D so far down on PP. Teach your D to pinch down to the goal line. Out battle them. Outnumber them. “Possession overrides position”. Always outwork them on the PP

    P K rules:
    1. Stop and Start St line skating.
    2. Lead with the stick. Body in the shooting lane. Look big.
    3. Busy sticks – in the passing lanes.
    4. Swivel the head – (Same rules for 5 vs 5 D zone play)
