ParticipantI watched PeeWee U 12 practice last night, and the Coaches ran a great practice. Lots of transition drills, the kids were having a great time, and the Coaches seemed very relaxed, compared the ther Bantam practice that was going on next door. Have a look at the PDF of one of the transition drills they ran, I wish I could explain it better, the kids sure knew how it was run.

KeymasterOne of my friends was just appointed as the Head Coach of a IIHF third division country. They will be in the world championships for their group in the spring. He has never been a head coach before but was a long time captain of the team and asked me to give him some team play ideas. I have put together links to the type of systems that I like to use. I am not a big 1-2-2 fan and instead use a forecheck that has worked a lot better for me and the one we used when I was with the Red Bulls in Austria.

KeymasterI am starting to work on the shooting and scoring section of the Swedish material. It starts with the concept that the 'puck has eyes' and illustrates the 'Five Scoring Areas' that work very well vs. a stand-up goalie. They are now a rare breed. Another Swede Thomas Magnusson gave a great presentation at an IIHF coaching symposium that I attended in Heidelberg, Germany 2010. He outlines how to score vs. the modern day goalie and where the goals come from. Only the Swedes and Finns study the game with such detail.

B5 – Shots From 3 Lines – with Give and Go U18 FKey Points:
This is a good warm-up drill for goalies and an effective way to practice taking a slap shot at full speed. Make sure you allow enough time between shooters for the goalie to prepare for the next shot.Shoot before the top of the circle. Follow the shot a few strides for the good habit and then return to the line on the outside so you don't get hit with a shot.
Description:
1. Line up in three lanes.
2. Start with 1 pass to 2.
3. Allow 2 to cross the blue line and then 1 leave and get a pass from 3.
4. Wait for 1 to cross the blue line then 3 leave and get a cross ice pass from 4.
5. Repeat 5 to 4, 6 to 5, 7 cross ice to 6.
6. Restart sequence with the first pass 1 to 3.B – Shots From 3 Lines – with a Give and Go U18 F
