Played two games. Calgary Red beat us 3-4 in OT. Our D tried to clear a pass and put scored an own goal. We played well and cut 4 F and 1 D after. We have ! D and 1 G loft to make decisions on.
Second game was vs. Red Deer who won last season and are always strong. We were awful first half and fell behind 0-4. We made some line changes putting our veterans together and it totally change the game with us outplaying them the second half and tying that 30' 1-1. It was very encouraging after a discouraging first 30'.

Fire Black Practice Plan - 09-20-25
Time: 13:30-14;45 Venue: Crowchild
Lines: 2 G – 12 F – 6 D Notes: Theme – defensive zone coverage, point shots, scissors, good habits

D4 - Two Pass
B6 - Machine Gun - 2 Pass x 2-Shot - U15 G
B2 - Coach Pass - D Drag-Shoot - Screen
T4 - Defensive Zone Skating - RB Pro
DT100 - Continuous 3-2 to 5-5
D202 – Two Thirds Ice Game with Jokers Behind Nets
E1 - 1-1 Puck Carrier Either Way - U17
Cheer in middle

Good practice. Got D to move and use deception as point shots are getting blocked. Young team and most of the F played C, so need to learn how to play in our zone and cover the point. Went over D zone coverage. Man on and box behind, combined man on man zone defense. Continuous 3-2 to 5-5 uses that coverage in a game situation. The 2/3 ice game works on puck support and getting eyes up. Machine gun has a lot of passing and timing.
Game today vs. Airdrie will be the first time we play with the regular team. One affiliate D replaces one injured.

Won 5-1 vs Airdrie. Shots about even but we have a really good line who scores on their chances. Played good defense and allowed no shots on rebounds. Their goal hit about three things before going in. Both goalies were very good. Have two practices before weekend tournament where we will play at least 4 games vs. teams from Western Canada.

Fire Black Practice Plan - 09-23-25
Time: 18:45-20:00 Venue: Max Bell
Lines: Notes: Focus on Specialty Teams

A300 x 2 - Skating and Puck Handling Warm-up with Shots – Finland
B200 Overspeed with a Pass
D4 - Clear Zone to Transition to Offense
T2-4 - Power Play 1 – PK 2 – Switch PP 2 PK 1
T4 - 4-5 Penalty Kill vs. Overload
T2-4 - Power Play-Penalty Kill Sequence – Pro
T2-4, D4 – Reilly Team Play Rotation
Team cheer in middle

Practiced the PP and Penalty kill. I took the pk and had the pp run the overload and diamond as that is what we see in this league. Jim worked on the 1-3-1 with both PP groups. We 10 players learning the PP and 8 the PK. In games the same thing with 18 players so everyone is on a specialty team. We will do this for a few weeks and then put a different 5 on the PP2. We are front loaded with games as we played one on Sunday and have our Firestarter tournament on the weekend with 4 or 5 games. We have a tournament in Kelowna in two weeks and will switch before that. Our season starts after that and we only play two games each weekend. So as many games in three weeks as we play until Christmas.
We have 11 first year players. 1 G, 4 D, 6 F. It is a big jump, so the young players have to get used to the size and speed. We had hockey sense as a big priority in our draft and it is apparent the way they pick up drills. Challenge is to implement good habits like face the puck, see the play, skate hard to open ice, get open, stick on puck, maintain D side, gain the lane, defend from the net out, get to big ice between dots with the puck, etc.
So we have lots to teach and players have a lot to learn. That is what the fun in coaching is.

DT100 – Continuous 2-2 to 4-4
D100 – 3-3 – One pass each zone
Team Cheer

We did a lot of good things on the weekend but shot ourselves in the foot with turnovers. We need to be a lot better at passing and receiving, make eye contact before passing, skate between dots with puck, basic puck management. We won battles and then turned the puck over by not looking or passing into coverage. Our D backed into our slot allowing them to shoot from the prime scoring area. Tight gaps and engaging more quickly will fix that.

U15 AA is a huge step from U13 and we have 11 players in first year and most teams about 6-8. They have to adjust to playing bigger stronger, faster players.

We worked really hard and caused a lot of turnovers. We outshot Warman and gave up 19-24-26 shots. Our goal is 3 or more goals for and 2 or less goals against.

We WILL get better.

These things are all achievable.

We practiced the breakout for 20' using Wally's sequence. All skated how I want them to keep moving on the wing. Everyone got a pass from a coach, then passed to goalie, then took a slapshot moving. We all then did C low and slow, then 2-0 to wing and back to C. Then 3-0 W - C - W slashing across. Goalies moved back to far blue on 3-0. We will build from here with D dump and making the passes.

We don't practice til Tuesday. Play an ex game vs. Provincial champs Red Deer tonight. We bus to Kelowna next Thursday, a 8 hour drive thru the mountains for a tournament next weekend.
I got a call my older brother got taken to the hospital in Penticton and not doing well, so I won't be at our next practice or on the bus. I am flying to Kelowna and will drive to Penticton, about 1.5 hours away to see him, then meet the team Thursday evening.
Yesterday morning Jim's wife Sara got smoked by a woman on a bike while walking to work. She is in the hospital and needs operations on her elbow, knee and orbital bone. Jim slept in a chair beside her last night. They were planning on coming to Kelowna. Jim is the one who planned the last practice.
I will plan the next practice for my other assistant coaches.
Tough last few days.

Played our best game vs defending Provincial champs Red Deer on Saturday. Did what we practice moving the puck, hard back pressure, battle hard. Got a 6-2 win on some great shots.
Last practice until driving to Kelowna for a tournament where we play about 5 games.

Went to Kelowna for a ten team tournament. We played 5 x 60' stop time games in four days. Our pool of five teams wasn't that strong and Airdrie and us beat the other three teams pretty easily. Played Airdrie in semi final and won 6-4. In final we played Grande Prairie, another team from Alberta and lost 3-5. Had ten bad minutes where they score 4 goals. Shots were 22-26 for them. Some of our younger players looked tired and didn't have a great game.
Got home after one in the morning and gave the skaters the day off and only goalies will practice tonight with Kaylin our goalie coach. Our season starts this weekend.

5 games in 4 days on weekend, so only goalies practiced on Tuesday while skaters rested after getting to bed about 1:30 Monday night after the 8 hour bus trip. Went 4-1 in Kelowna tournament, lost 3-5 in final to Grande Prairie from the Alberta northern division of our league.
Goal of practice was to improve general individual and team skills. We have to get rid of blind back hand passes and improve our passing game. I taught the players close support in the drills and they are getting better at it. Our pk let us down in the final, so we worked on that with the new pk group.

Lost 3+0 to Fire Red in the league opener. Outshot them 30-21 but gave up three breakaways that they scored on. We did a lot of good things and dominated the last half of the game but no goals.

Game two we played Airdrie. Lots of shots but no goals and were behind 0-1 until the last two minutes of the second period. We finally scored the first goal of the season and then another a minute later. We got two more goals in the third to win 4-1. Outshot them 40-9.

Saturday we played the Raiders at the rink outside of Okotoks. It was a specialty team game with the ref calling anything close to a penalty. Our back pressure and good 1-1 D took away their rushes and we gave up only 19 shots and got 38 in a 5-0 win with solid goaltending. Nadia got 3 goals and 2 assists. Great to have contributions from other players.

Sunday we played Southern Alberta. They lost the day before in OT to Fire Red. They have a big, fast, skilled team. Again our defensive 1-1 game took away their 1 on 5 rushes. They outshot us 31-24, which is the most shots against so far this year, Hunter was good in the net. Our power play was running on all cylinders and scored 4 goals and we go another on a breakaway. We had a 5-1 lead with 3 minutes left but gave up two late goals and won 5+3. We play them next Sunday in Lethbridge.

This week we will focus on defensive 1-1's, point shots, penalty kill. On Thursday we will play our Halloween game where everyone wears a costume.

Only one game this weekend. Sunday vs. Southern Alberta in Lethbridge.
It was a strange game with 28 minutes in penalties and only 32' of even strength. They took 11 penalties and we took 3. So players who kill penalties didn't get the ice time they would when we roll four lines at even strength and they are on the pk.
Our pp wasn't moving the puck like we have been but ended up scoring three times, one 5-4, one a 5-3 and one into the empty net at the end of the game while we were on the pp.
We dominated the first but only scored once. They dominated the second and each team score a goal. We scored on a 5-3 PP and they scored a nice goal on the pp and we led 3-2 until they took a late penalty but pulled their goalie and we scored an empty netter.
Hard to get a flow going in a game like this. We go the 4-2 win.
We go back to Lethbridge next weekend. All 15 teams will be there and we play three north division teams to lessen the road trips. One game each day Friday, Saturday, Sunday. It will be a hard weekend but if we keep the good discipline and work ethic we will do ok.

– Parent meet coaches. Go over where we are now and where we want to go before the three game weekend in Lethbridge.
----------------------------------------
First game we played a weak team wiyh a leaky goalie and won 9-1. Top three scorers only got two assists between them, so nice to see other players scoring.
Second game was against Grande Prairie who beat us in Kelowna final. It was a hard game and we came out on top 2-1.
Third game vs. Camrose we had a bad first, even second and dominated third. Outshot them 41-21 but their goalie was good and we shot over the net a lot on good chances. Lost 2-3.
So a pretty good weekend.

Team created their covenant and also brought a picture and used it to describe why they play. I will attach. [/i]

First game this weekend was with Airdrie. We got outshot something like 39-34 which is about 10 more shots against than usual. We got 3 pp goals and won 6-4. They have a good, fast, big team with the top U15 player in the Province. Not pretty but we outscored them.
Don't want to have to score 5 to win a game.

Second game was vs. perennial Provincial champs Red Deer. They don't have the natural scorers like other years but do play the game really well. Pass the puck and go hard to the net.
It was a good fast game. They got up 1-0 at start of third and we got a pp goal, then a nice goal from a nzone turnover, they tied it with a pp goal and then we scored another pp goal with just over a minute left and won 3-2. We had a good first and third period and were sloppy in the second.[/i]

We have a 3 game road trip next weekend vs. north division teams. Friday St. Albert, Saturday Sherwood Park and Sunday Lloydminster. For some reason we don't play the two Edmonton teams this season, so this will finish our games with the northern division.

After 10 games we are 8-2-0 with 40 GF, 20 GA and really rely on our power play which has 20 goals and has 4 of our players in the 15 league top ten scorers.

We have 9 skaters who are first year and 4 are undersized. So we need to work on battling on the boards and net front as well as composure with the puck. We are getting better at passing and receiving and dominate games when we put a lot of back pressure on the puck carrier. We didn't do that as well last weekend.

Busy weekend with three road games vs. Northern Division teams. Roads can be brutal this time of year but the snow held off until later in the night we got back. First 3.5 hours to St. Albert, 45 minutes to Sherwood Park and 2.5 hours to Lloydminster then 6 hours to get home Sunday night.

All hard fought games.

Beat St. Albert 4-1 and we played pretty well and got good goaltending.
Next day we lost to Sherwood Park in OT. Came back from two goals down and they scored a fluky goal off a stick to win 3 on 3 overtime 3-4. Both teams got about 35 shots which is way too many against for us. We drove to Lloyd after the game.

Sunday played Lloydminster and got behind 0-2 then 1-2, then 1-3. Tied it 3-3 in third then 4-3 and finished off the 5-3 win with an empty net goal.

Overall we played hard and scored a lot but gave up too many scoring chances and goals against. Our mantra is to give up 2 or less goals and score 3 or more. We are outscoring our mistakes right now averaging about 4 GF a game and a little more than 2 GA per game.
10-2-1 so far and we have 3 in the league top ten scoring.

This week at practice we will change up the lines to make them more balanced and work on team and individual defensive skill and continue getting better in all the individual skills like skating, passing, shooting, etc. Better players equal a better team.

We changed the PP and PK with a new PP 2. All of the centres are now on PP1, so we will have the wings and all the D kill penalties. We went over the PP and PK at practice. Everyone now has been on both PP and PK.
