Daily Drill Part Thirteen

It is just about time to start a new Daily Drill Section. I have a lot of video clips from pro teams and groups both men and women. Some of the drills, games, transition games, shoot-outs, fitness drills have been posted before with younger groups in the video or different pro teams. If this is the case then I will include previous video links. Everyone adds a little wrinkle, whether it is starting in a different place on the ice or adding a task.

The table of contents for drill section 13 are in the pdf. posted below.

Key Points:

Defense play a tight gap and delay the play. Slide to the outside of the near post when the play gets deep. Attack with speed and make the first pass early then read the D.

Description:

Defense make a breakout pass and follow the 2 on 1 ready to defend the next 2-1 in the other direction.

1. D1 pass to either F1 or F2.
2. F1-F2 attack vs. D2 and D1 follow.
3. On whistle D3 pass to either F3 or F4.
4. F3-F4 attack 2-1 vs. D1.

*Continue this flow.

*Game situations up to a 3-2 can be practiced with this drill.

Key Points:

Defense skate between the dots. Make a hard breakout pass. Slide if attacker has only one option. Forwards attack with speed and make the first play early. Crash the net for rebounds.

Description:

1. On whistle D1 get puck behind net, skate to Big Ice and Pass to either F1 or F2.
2. F1-F2 attack 2-1 vs. D2.
3. Coach give a definite time like 10" for the attack then blow the whistle.
4. D2 get a puck from behind the net and pass to either F3 or F4.
5. F3-F4 attack 2-2 vs. D3.

*Continue this flow.

*Game situations up to a 3-2 can be practiced with this drill.

DT100 Continuos 2-1, 2-2 Detroit - Pro

Key Points:

Face the puck. Forwards attack with speed. D stay in the middle and deny F to F pass. Forwards make the first play near the offensive blue line to force the D to make a decision. D delay the play as much as possible.

Description:

1. F1 and F2 attack vs D1.
2. F3 and F4 support D1 as far as the hash marks.
3. D2 support F1 and F2 passively from the point.
4. D1 make a breakout pass to F3 or F4.
5. F3-F4 attack D2 in the other direction.
6. F5 and F6 support D2 and D3 support F3 and F4.
7. Continue this flow.
8. Add a D to make it a 2 on 2.

Options.
There could be active support with a 2-1 in the neutral zone and a 3-3 at each end. Another option is to combine active and passive support or add dump ins and regroups.

DT100 Continuous 2 on 2 – Passive Support - Pro

Key Points:

The two attacking forwards play attack 2 on 2 and then play a low 2-2 vs. the two defenders.

Description:

1. Forwards line up on one side and defense on the other.
2. Start with a 2 on 2 attack F1 and F2 vs D1 and D2.
3. When the puck enters the zone defensive Red F1 and F2 give passive support from the mid-slot area and attacking team Blue D1 and D2 support F's.
4. Play 2 on 2 low in the zone.
5. If the puck is dumped out with no possession the offensive team regroup and attack again.
6. The supporting players who joined the play now go 2 on 2 in the other direction.
7. F2 - F3 support D1 and D2 and D3 and D4 support attacking F1 and F2.

The first video is a demonstration by Wahlsten and Yursinov at an IIHF seminar. They stat with 1-1 and then to practice loose puck situations they dump the puck in. The players then move to a continuous 2 on2.

The second video is a pro camp. The new forwards come in the zone lower and help on loose pucks.

This drill is run by Kalle Kaskinen, who was the asst. coach with this team and the head coach of the U17 team who came here last Christmas and won the U18 Mac's Midget Tournament. Kalle has worked on the ABC program with Juhani Wahlsten and myself for many years. This season he is helping another friend Erkka Westerlund (2006-2014 silver and bronze Olympic head coach) who will be the head coach of Helsinki, Jokerit as they start their first season in the KHL.)
Since this posting Kalle has coached in the Finnish Elite League and 2021-22 will be coaching a KHL team.

B6-600 Flow - Breakout 2 F Shoot - D Point Shot – Finland U20

Key Points:

Make hard passes, give a target, keep skating while making plays, follow shots for rebounds, stop at the net, screen.

Description:

Start at both ends with players on each side of the net and pucks in all four corners.

1 – D1 start by skating up an back get a puck and bank pass behind the net to D2. D1 goes to the corner.

2 – D2 pass to F1 breaking along the boards.

3 – F2 skates to the big ice between the dots and pass to F2. D2 follow then circle back to the corner.

4 – F2 skate down and shoot then skate to corner. F1 skate around the middle circle for a pass from D2.

5 – D1 bump a puck to D2 who skates between the dots and pass to F1 who skates down ice and shoots.

6 – D2 then follow the play up the ice and get a pass from F2 in the corner then drag and shoot – F1-F2 screen.

Key Points:

Defense must have quick feet and drive skate behind the net and make a good pass from between the dots. D in front must recognize he is third man and join the 3-1 rush.

Description:

1. D1 skate up to the top of the circle and back and to up a puck then wheel behind the net.
2. F1-F2 come into the zone from each side for a breakout pass, D2 starts in front of the net.
3. D1 make a breakout pass and D2 joins to make 3 on the rush.
4. Attack 3-1 vs. D3.
5. Give a time limit to score and then the repeat the other way with F3-F4 and D3 attacking vs. D1 who follow the rush to the far blue line.

Key Points:

Approach the puck carrier from slightly behind angling toward the back of the inside shoulder with the stick on the puck and body on body. Skate through the hands with the inside leg in front and pick up the loose puck.

Description:

1 - Players line up just outside the blue line near the dots, puck are in each corner.
2 - F1 leaves and picks up a puck in the corner then skates up the wide lane.
3 - F2 follows from slightly behind and steers F1 along the boards.
4 - F2 approaches at the back shoulder with 'body on body and stick on the puck.'
5 - F2 angle checks F1 with the inside leg in front then picks up the loose puck.
6 - F2 skates into the slot and shoot - rebounds.
7 - F2 picks up a puck from the opposite corner and F3 becomes the checker.

* Repeat alternating sides.

Key Points:

Attack with speed and do everything with quick feet.

Description:

1 - Simulate a neutral zone turnover with blue F1 pass to the red D1 and then forecheck.
2 - D1-D2 hinge and up to a forward.
3 - Red forwards attack 3-0.
4 - Red F1 get a puck from the corner cycle back to F2 who passes to D1.
5 - D1 fake a shot and pass to D2 who one times a shot – F1 and F2 go to the net.
6 - F3 get a puck from the other corner and repeat passing to D2.
7 - The high forward get a new puck on the whistle and pass to start the drill again.

*Alternative idea is when the puck is at the point one F screen, one F be a shot pass option and one F be a one timer option. All go to the net on a shot.

Key Points:

Quick feet as soon as you get the puck. Use head and shoulder fakes to freeze the defenders and goalie. One touch shots. Always give a target.

Description:

1 – After the initial rush F1 get a puck from the corner, cycle high and pass to D1.
2 – D1 skate hard to the mid-point and pass back to F1.
3 – D2 skate in for a Back Door pass from F1 and shoot.
4 – Repeat from the other corner with F6 passing to D2.
5 - F1-F2-F3 dump the puck in and try to score vs. five blue defenders.
6 – Blue defend and breakout 5-0 and attack the red net.

B - Individual Skills Post Practice 1 – Detroit

Key Points:

Work on individual technique in groups. Find a space on the ice that doesn’t interfere with other players and you can practice the skill.

Description:

1 – Goalie practice – the coach pass to a player behind the net who makes fakes while the goalie practices looking over his shoulder. Pass out front for a one timer.
2 – Groups of 4 or 5 players play keep-away starting along the boards protecting the puck. Keep moving into the group with the puck while the other players poke check.
3 – Practice taking face-offs at a neutral zone face-off dot.
4 – Coach pass from the corner to the point while onne player screen and tip in front and then pass across to the far dot for a shot.
5 – Zig-zag across the ice from the blue line to the red line in the neutral zone.

On backhand receptions, keep the stick blade square to the puck and hands away from the body. Follow through at the target on passes and shots. Play in the triple threat position.

Description:

1 – Figure 8 relay across the neutral zone with a pass at each end.
2 – Figure 8 agility skate with one pass.
3 – Receiving backhand passes with a partner.
4 – One touch shot while skating.
5 – Defense agility skate and shoot the forwards take a one timer.

Key Points:

Far wing get right up against the wide D and get the puck past him. Important for D1 to drive skate to the back of the net.

Description:

1 – Set up for a defensive zone face-off.
2 – Centre draw the puck back and D1 on wall go back for it.
3 – D2 skate for a pass from D1.
4 – C support swinging across the middle, far wing up the boards other wing stay wide.
5 – Attack 5 on 2 with a middle drive and play until the whistle.
6 – Neutral zone regroup with D.
7 – Attack again 5-2 and coach give a time limit to score.

Key Points:

The defenders must read even and outnumber situations and the star and then recognize their responsibility on the 3 on 5.

Description:

Players wait outside the blue line and the coach changes the situation.
1 – Dump the puck in and start with a 1-1.
2 – Add an offensive player for 2-1.
3 – Defenseman comes in for 2-2.
4 – Add a new attacker for a 3-2.
5 – Three defending forwards come in and defend the 3-5.

Key Points:

Skate all the way to each line before going the other way. A good practice is to always face the same wall when stopping so you do it each side. At least 4 groups. Can be a fitness test.

Description:

Key Points:

Defender must always recognize the most dangerous attacker and deny plays that cross the mid-line. With the goalie it is really a 2 on 2 so expect the goalie to cover half the net. Attackers make quick plays vs. a sliding as opposed to a square goalie and crash the net for rebounds.

Description:

Organization:
Forwards in the corner and at the far point and Defenders wait outside the blue line.

1 – Coach pass to either F1 or F2 in the corner.
2 – D1 play a 2-1 until the puck is out of the scoring area.
3 – Coach whistle and pass to F3 at the far point who attacks 1-1 vs. D1.
4 – Repeat with new players.

*You can run this drill at both ends at once and switch to a 2-1 from the point and 1-1 from the corner.

C6 1-1 to 2-2 - D Join F Backcheck – Multiple Examples

This is one of the most commonly used drills that I have seen used by pro, junior, international teams around the hockey world. It is usually done 1-1 to a 2-2 but other variations are possible with the same flow. There are 3 video examples. Two with Flames teams from different seasons and one at an NHL prospect camp. The coach can duplicate the same situation in a transition game by having the D join the next rush and the F backcheck but I don't see this done much even though it is more game-like.

This drill has a great flow and transition from offense to defense and visa versa and lots of possibilities to practice skills and game situations:

Instead of defense and forwards have everyone play both by having half the blue defend at one end and the other half at the other. Reds will be opposite. Now everyone practices all off the offensive and defensive skills needed in the game.

Randomly send out 1 or 2 defenders and 1,2 or 3 attackers. Now the situation is different every time and the players have to ‘Read and Act’ according to the situation. Every numerical situation will be created.

Give a time limit for a rush to score and keep score Red vs. Blue to increase the competitiveness.

To practice loose puck situations practice dump in’s which cause the attackers to forecheck and the defenders to break out.

Key Points:

D join the attack on the whistle and attacking forwards back check. It is a fight for inside position. No penalties. Important that the forwards touch the red line so F1-D1 are close enough to join the play.

Description:

1. Blue D1 pass to Red F1 who skates to the red line and turns back attacking 1-1 vs. D1.
2. On the whistle Red D2 passes to Blue F2 at the other end of the rink.
3. Blue F2 skates to the red line and turns back attacking 1-1 vs Red D2. while Red D1 Joins Red F1 on the attack and White F1 backchecks making it a 2-2.
4. Repeat with Blue D3 passing to Red F3 at original end.

*Situations up to a 3-2 can be practiced. You need at least 8 D and 12 F to practice 3-2 with a 5-5 at each end. With larger number the lineup needs to move up to the blue line and start with a pass in the neutral zone.

C5 - Dump-in 3-2 – Pro

Key Points:

Attack quickly and create 2 on 1 situations and shots that make the goalie go post to post. Defend and make it a 3-3 with the goalie making him only cover the strong side of the net.

Description:

1 – Start with a dump-in by the coach from the blue line.
2 – One defender be aggressive on the loose puck.
3 – Second defender read the next play. Attackers create 2-1’s and triangles.
4 – Attackers outnumber the defenders on loose puck battles.
5 – Defenders must maintain the defensive side.
6 – Coach should set a time limit, i.e. 10-20” to score.
7- Give and go passes are the attackers best weapon.

*Always read, ‘should I pressure or contain. As long as the attack stays on one side it is a 3-3 and the goalie is responsible to make strong side saves.

Becoming a 360 Degree Player:

I went to a seminar yesterday that had video demo’s of puck handling. The only problem was that the players had rigid upper bodies and everything was from the forehand side to straight in front. The backhand side was non-existent.
Here are some videos from Europe that show how to develop loose shoulders and the ability to handle the puck all around the body.

This is Vladimir Yursinov’s puck handling warm-up demonstrated by Yashin who was the Russian captain and for NHL MVP. Big moves, loose upper body. Yursinov is recognized as the top skills coach in Europe and more than 60 of his former players have moved onto the NHL. Yursi’s teams do this at the start of practice as a warm-up. I saw this when he had me run a checking practice as a guest coach for TPS in Finland. I was lucky enough to coach with him on the Red Bulls staff where he came one week a month to work with the players.

Key Points:

Defense make the pass while skating between the dots up ice. Forwards give a target and do everything while skating.

Description:

1 – D1 at each end skate from the goal line to the top of the circle and back then get a puck.
2 – F1 and F2 leave from the blue line and come back for a breakout pass. F2 mirror the puck across.
3 – D1 pass to either F1 or F2 and D1 follow the rush up the ice.
4 – F take the ‘big ice’ between the dots and then pass wide.
5 – F make a wide zone entry and shoot-rebound.

Key Points:

Players transition from Role 1- puck carrier to Role 2 – puck support to Role 3 – check puck carrier to Role 4 – defend away from the puck. Good habits like giving a target, face the puck, get open, skate to open ice with the puck are practiced.

Description:

1 – Play 2 on 2 and each team has one Joker behind each net.
2 – When you regain the puck you must regroup with the Joker behind the net.
3 – Pass to the Joker behind the offensive net before you can shoot. (Joker can pass to Joker)
4 – Rotate on the whistle from the line-up on blue line to play and after playing become the Joker and Jokers to the line-up (you could do it opposite as well)

This drill was posted before with the Czech U17 National Team with Petr Svoboda coaching. The pro's now do it and there are two video clips with them. The Czech go without whistles and the pro's use a whistle. It is a good warm-up drill requiring a lot of agility skating and skills. I mentored the coaches and Petr (NHL defenseman for Toronto) in 2010 and Petr was the only one who spoke English and did all the translating with the HC Dukla Jihlava team which is a city about 90 minutes south of Prague.

Key Points:

Description:

1. All players and pucks are in the middle.

Games to Teach the Game - Hockey Coaching ABC's

Hockey can be conceptualized very easily if we think of the 4 Game Playing Roles. In a game we are always in one of 3 Situations: Offense, Defense or Loose Puck. In offense and defense we are in one of the 4 Game Playing Roles.

This article explains the 4 roles and gives examples of many games that a coach can use to teach the game to the players. "The Game Teaches the Game" and "Enjoy the Game" are the two themes of the ABC program.

The Four Player Roles

When the Four Player Roles are understood by coaches and by players, the game becomes easy to teach and to learn. Once the needs of players or teams are determined, games and modified scrimmages that emphasize the players' roles become quite easy to invent and to implement. Good habits are reinforced naturally in game-like settings; the game becomes easy to play correctly. Skill is a natural by-product. Be Creative.

The Four Player Roles
Both in offensive and defensive games, the moves of the players are determined by what role they are playing. The roles are determined by their closeness to the puck and whether they are on defense, offense or in transition. During any of these situations each player will be fulfilling one of the four playing roles.

Role One: The puck carrier or, for loose puck situations, the offensive player closest to the puck

Role Two: The other offensive players who support the puck carrier by getting open for a pass, screening or giving width and depth to the attack

Role Three: The checker (defensive player) closest to the puck or puck carrier

Role Four: The other defensive players who cover man-to-man or, an area of the ice All maintain the defensive side and deflect the attack to the outside. Depending on the distance to the puck and, whether he is the third, fourth, or fifth player closest to the puck, the player in the fourth playing role must support by covering an opponent, switching, or double-teaming.

When each player assumes the proper playing role, the team can think in the same way. There is never a question of the goalie's role, and the same clarity of role and responsibility should apply for every player on the ice. Player roles constantly change in the game, and the players must be able to react instantly in the appropriate manner in all game situations. The puck carrier must always move into open ice, but it is difficult to be effective if teammates don't also move into open ice. One defensive player always works to force the puck carrier wide out of the danger areas, and the other defenders support and eventually gain possession of the puck.

Skating Games
The players must know how to skate before they can effectively play games. Skating drills and skating games are an effective way to learn how to skate. Refer to the Hockey Coaching ABCâ€?s books for hundreds of drill and technique idea. Below are many games that the players can use to practice skating. First the players need to learn how to skate. We code this as "0" skills. It is a series of games to practice skating.

0.1. GAME OF CATCH WITH A PARTNER:

Play a game of catch with a partner. Use a ball and stand about 3-5 metres apart. This will stress balance of the skates.

0.2. GAME OF CATCH WITH A PARTNER WHILE MOVING AROUND IN A SMALL AREA OF THE ICE:

Play a game of catch with a partner while moving around a small area of the ice --throwing and catching the ball. Groups larger than two can be used. This game helps in balance, using the edges, turning and stopping.

0.3. GAME OF KEEP-AWAY USING A BALL:

The players must throw and catch a ball against another team. Play 1 v 1, 2 v 2, 3 v 3, etc. Make sure all players have gloves to protect the hands from the skate blades. This game works all of the skating skills and develops split vision.

0.4. GAME OF FREEZE TAG:

Players play in one zone. One person is it. When a player is tagged they must stay in the spot they were touched. To be free another free player must slide on his\her stomach between the frozen players legs. This game uses all skating skills especially agility on skates.

0.5. GAME USING ONLY THE FEET AS IN SOCCER FOOTBALL:

Each player has a pylon and places the pylons all over the ice. The player dribbles the puck with his\her feet and scores at as many pylons as possible in one minute. The coach times the activity and has 5-7 games of one minute. After each game he\she asks who scored the most goals. Game skills are introduced in this game. Coordination on the ice is the focus.

0.6. ONE ON ONE GAME OF SOCCER FOOTBALL:

The player scores by kicking the puck against the pylon. Each player has a pylon and places it across ice from his\her partner. Split vision, agility, and turns are emphasized in this activity.

0.7. BRITISH BULLDOG:

This game has the players line up at the end of the rink in the A2 formation. One player is at the blue line and calls out British Bulldog. The players try to skate to the other end without being touched by the player at the blue line. If you are touched you join the player who is calling British Bulldog. To be good at this game the player must turn quickly, change speeds, and be agile.

0.8. TWO ONE TWO GAME OF SOCCER FOOTBALL:

The players are in teams of 2 and score by kicking the puck or a ball and hitting the pylon. One pass must be made. Offensive and defensive principles are learned, as well as change of pace skating.

0.9. PYLON HOCKEY:

Use a large pylon instead of a stick. A goal is scored by pushing the puck over the other team's goal line. This game practices keeping the knees bent and head up while skating.

0.10. HALF SHAFT HOCKEY:

Play a cross-ice game of 3-3, holding the stick halfway down the shaft. This causes the players to bend their knees. This can also be played as a full ice game.

0.11. SPLIT VISION GAME USING MANY GOALS:

Each player has a pylon placed all over the rink. The players have a stick and a puck. They start at their pylon and the idea is to score as many goals as you can in one minute. This can be done a few times. The players are told to concentrate on protecting the puck with their body and to use split vision so they avoid colliding with the other players. The player with the most goals wins.

0.12. GAME OF HANDBALL ON ICE:

Two teams play full ice. Regular goals are used. All players must handle the ball before a goal counts. Use the ringette crease, only the goalie can be in the crease. If the ball or Frisbee hits the ice the other team gets possession. All skating skills are practiced in this game.

0.13. RACES PULLING A PARTNER WHO IS KNEELING DOWN:

The players hold one stick in each hand and skate one length of the ice while pulling their kneeling partner. At the other end the partner pulls the first skater back. Stress bending knees and toeing out. This activity causes the skater to toe out, using more of the skate blade and a longer stride.

0.14. GAME WITH ONE PYLON FOR EVERY TWO PLAYERS:

The idea is to protect the puck with your body and try to score by hitting the pylon with the puck. The other player gets the puck if a goal is scored. Keep score and change opponents every two minutes. Balance and agility on skates are needed in this game.

0.15 FLAT FOOTED SKATING:

Play cross ice or half ice allowing only flat footed skating where the blades never leave the ice. This is a good strengthening exercise as well as good practice in toeing in and out as well as unlocking the hips while skating.

0.16. RELAY RACES IN THE NEUTRAL ZONE:

The players are in teams of 4 with two waiting behind opposite blue lines. Teams at one end have a puck. On the whistle the first player skates to the opposite blue line stops and picks up a puck. He\she then skates to his\her starting place and puts the puck on the ice. The teammate at the other end leaves when the puck is on the ice and gets the puck and takes it back to his\her blue line, race until all players have had a turn. Have about four players on each team. Coach judges winner. The skills of stopping and starting as well as full speed skating are stressed in this activity.

0.17. OLYMPIC RELAY:

Divide the players into four teams. Move the nets up to the hash marks. First player skates around the ice and passes his\her stick to the next player between the blue lines. Each player gets one turn around. Speed and cross over turns are emphasized in this race.

0.18. RELAY RACE PUSHING FOUR PLAYERS:

The players line up behind the goal line at one end. Three players squat down and one player pushes the length of the ice. When he\she has skated one length go to the front of the line and squat down. Now the new player at the end pushes. Race is over when all have had a turn pushing one length.

0.19. RINGETTE WITH STICKS TURNED UPSIDE DOWN:

The players play ringette using one ring in a full ice game. Shifts of five players are used. Goals are scored by shooting the ring into the net. All must handle the ring before a goal counts.

Examples of Games and Modified Scrimmages which teach players the proper skills and habits needed to be effective players.

Role One:
With the puck, individual offensive skill games

1.1. BRITISH PUCK DOG:

The players line up behind the goal line; when the player in the middle yells British Puck-dog they carry the puck, trying to get to the end, without being checked. If a player loses the puck they are in the middle checking. Last player with a puck wins.

1.2. KEEP AWAY:

Everyone is trying to keep the puck in a small area. Reduce the amounts of pucks after every 15 seconds until only one puck is left.

1.3. PLAYING WITH MORE PUCKS USING FULL ICE

This enables the coach to increase the amount of activity on the ice. More game like situations are created for the players to solve. Again there can be no hitting or slap shots. One puck for each four players is a good ratio for beginners. All players should keep track of their goals. For beginners you can use many pucks and ask them to score as many goals as possible. After a while you ask how many each player scored, if the goalie is making a save the puck carrier must wait to shoot.

1.4. PLAYING WITH 7 PUCKS

Two teams gather at center and the coach drops 7 pucks. The first team to score 4 goals wins, and another game begins. Make sure that there are only 7 pucks and the pucks are left in the net after a goal.

1.5. PLAYING WITH 3 PUCKS

Playing with 3 pucks causes some things to naturally happen. The players must look around with their heads on a swivel so they know what is happening behind them. Some methods are; everyone on the ice, 5-5 with line changes. Another idea is a timed game where the goalie puts the puck back into play after a goal. Keep score and the team that scores twice wins. For the next game, start with two pucks, then one. In order to avoid confusion have only three pucks on the ice at one time, the extra pucks can be on top of the nets.

1.6. PLAYING WITH TWO PUCKS

Playing with 2 pucks has the same basic purpose in the system as all multi-puck games. The goalie puts the puck back into play after a goal. A good technique is to give a point to the team that scores two goals. Playing with two pucks at more advanced levels is a good read and react exercise if you play situations such as 3-3.

1.7. CROSS ICE GAME STRESSING EYE ON THE PUCK \ GOOD POSTURE

By emphasizing facing the puck, you can teach your players to always see the puck when playing. Players learn to move in relationship to what is happening, allowing them to read the play and react in a
constructive manner. This helps eliminate unnecessary turns, and useless skating. At the same time the coach can emphasize the proper skating posture, so that players are always in the ready position.

1.8. GAME OF ONE ON ONE WITH FAKES AND FEINTS ATTACKING THE DEFENDER FROM THE SIDE:

Stress protecting the puck, making fakes and feints, and attacking from the side on offense. On defense, stress staying on the defensive side between the attacker and the net.

1.9. GAME OF ONE ON ONE; USING HEAD AND SHOULDER FAKES:

Goals are set up across the ice using nets, pylon, or the stripes on the boards. The players play each other and use head and shoulder fakes when stick handling. The game can last two minutes and then one side moves down to the next goal and the end person moves to the first goal. Now start another game against a new opponent. This technique can be used in all D2 games.

1.10. GAME WITH HANDS CLOSE TOGETHER NEAR THE TOP OF THE STICK:

Now play a half ice game of 1-1, the rule is the hands must be close together at the top of the stick. This enables the puck carrier to make big moves.

1.11. GAME WITH LEGS WIDE APART WHILE FAKING:

The player tries to combine the lessons learned in the other games. When he\she approaches the opponent he\she should spread his\her legs wide apart and combine this with the head and shoulder fakes,
protecting the puck with his\her body and hands close together. Pressure on the inside edge of the skate enables the player to turn very quickly.

1.2. GAME STRESSING MOVING QUICKLY BY TAKING AT LEAST THREE STRIDES TO OPEN
ICE WHEN YOU GET THE PUCK:

The coach has the rule that the player must take at least three quick strides as soon as he\she gains possession of the puck. This may be the most important lesson the offensive player learns, as it creates
time and space for the puck carrier as well as changing all of the passing angles.

1.3. CROSS ICE GAMES WITH TWO NETS:

A normal game, but cross-ice. Have groups of any numerical situation play for 10-20 seconds, then change on the fly when the whistle goes. The next players are lined up at the side of the game. e.g. along blue line if game is in one end. An alternative is to have a coach in the middle of the blue line and one behind where the regular goal would be. This enables the players to pass to the coach or player and break for an opening. The coach must pass to the offensive team or shoot and the defenders cover their checks
and do not chase after the coach.

1.4. GAME HOLDING THE STICK WITH ONLY THE TOP HAND AND PROTECTING THE PUCK:

The players are only allowed to hold the stick with one hand. This causes them to protect the puck with the body, as they cannot move the puck very fast.

1.5. FACE THE PUCK GAME:

Divide the players into teams of two or three. The rule is that the players must always face the puck during the game.

1.6. REGULAR GAME

This scrimmage should be as much like a regular game as possible with referees, and goals counted. When the teams are equal both defense and offense are practiced. The players must focus on the game and take it seriously or else bad habits can develop. Having the line that is scored on skate some lengths or else come off the ice are two methods that help the players to work at both ends of the ice. If the ice time is short avoid stoppages by eliminating face-offs and timing shifts so that the players change on the go while the coach shoots the puck into a neutral area, so the players can race for possession after they jump over the boards. If there are only three units playing the line that is on the ice must touch the boards behind
their net during the line change.

1.7. FULL ICE GAME WITH 45-60 SECOND SHIFTS:

Break team into two teams of two lines. Play full ice with the rule that a player can only handle the puck for three touches or two seconds and then must pass. When the coach blows the whistle the next group of players, who are lined up along the boards, come on. The player with the puck should pass to the new teammate coming on.

1.8 GAME WITH NO PASSING ALLOWED:

The player with the puck must try to score while the other players support behind, screen and pick and go for rebounds.

Role Two:
Offensive support off the puck, team offensive skill games

2.1. PLAYING A GAME WHERE THERE MUST BE AT LEAST ONE PASS BEFORE A GOAL COUNTS:

There must be at least one pass before the goal counts. Set up goals across ice from each other. Play for one or two or minutes then change opponents.

2.2. PLAYING A GAME WHERE THERE MUST BE AT LEAST TWO PASSES BEFORE A GOAL COUNTS:

There must be at least two passes before a goal counts. This teaches offensive support and passing skills. On defense, one player should check the puck carrier and the other player should cover the pass receiver, both on the defensive side. This practices the final two playing roles.

2.3. GAME WITH AT LEAST THREE PASSES:

Playing either cross ice or in a half ice game goals count only if at least three passes are made first before a shot is taken.

2.4. GAME TO TEACH THE OFFSIDE RULE TO YOUNG PLAYERS:

A good way to teach young players how to stay onside is by playing a half ice game. The puck cannot be brought back over the blue line until all players are onside. Straddling the blue line can be taught as well as reaching over the line with the puck in order to avoid putting teammates offside.

2.5. GAME STRESSING THE FOUR PLAYING ROLES:

One player must cover the pass receiver from the puck side, always seeing the puck. Remind players that the puck carrier is also covered by one player from the defensive side. This game reviews the four playing roles. 1. Player with puck. 2. Offensive player off the puck. 3. Defender covering puck carrier. 4. Defensive player covering pass receiver.

2.6. 2-2, 3-3, FULL ICE GAMES

Playing in small groups for 30 second shifts is a good way to practice support on offense and defense.

2.7. GAME WITH THE PUCK CARRIER TAKING AT LEAST THREE TO FIVE QUICK STRIDES
BEFORE PASSING;

Game with at least one pass but the puck carrier must take three quick strides before passing.

2.8. FULL ICE GAME WITH 45-60 SECOND SHIFTS:

Full ice game with 60 seconds shifts. Break team into two teams of two lines. Play full ice with the rule that a player can only handle the puck for two seconds and then must pass. When the coach blows the
whistle the next group of players, who are lined up along the boards, come on. The player with the puck should pass to the new teammate coming on.

2.9. TWO OR THREE TOUCH GAME

Only allow two or three stick touches, or one or two seconds with the puck. This helps the players to develop split vision, and to look around before they get the puck, and also forces everyone to support the puck carrier.

2.10. GAME WITH WRIST PASSING ONLY:

Wrist passes are more deceptive and easier to control than slap passes. Teach wrist passing by playing a full ice game where only backhand or forehand wrist passes are allowed. If a slap pass is made the other team gets the puck.

2.11. PASSING TO THE CLOSEST TEAMMATE:

The player with the puck must pass to his closest teammate. This causes players to come back to the puck or support the puck carrier more closely it also practices making the easy play.

2.12. GAME ALLOWING ONLY ONE PASS:

By allowing only one pass the player must try to score by drive skating to the net and teammates must support by screening and going to the net for rebounds
2.13. ATTACK USING THE OFFENSIVE TRIANGLE:

The first player skates wide, the second player skates to the post, the third player trails. If the first player drives the middle the second players crosses behind, then the third player drives the post.
2.14. OFFENSIVE TEAM PLAY:

Play a game with offensive concepts in mind. All players must focus on their tasks in offensive hockey. An offensive player is either carrying the puck or supporting the puck carrier by breaking for a pass,
screening or backing up the play. The individual strengths of players should be utilized in the offensive plan of a team. The defensive style and individual weaknesses of the opposition should also be considered when the game plan is made.

2.15. GAME WITH NO PASSING ALLOWED IN OFFENSIVE ZONE:

This game is designed to work on going to the net, picking, setting screens, and going for rebounds. It also forces the defense to stay on the defensive side.

2.16. GAME WITH ONLY BACKHAND PASSING AND SHOOTING:

Take the individual skill of backhand passing and practice it in a game context. This not only promotes backhand passes and shots but also changes the way the supporting players move. More back passing and crossing will happen and players learn to protect the puck with their body when shooting backhands. A tip on receiving a backhand pass is to keep the outside leg forward, this closes the player's stance and makes taking hard backhanded passes easier, the key is to relax the hands and keep the stick blade square to the
puck.

2.17. GAME WITH NO "GIVE AND GO PASSES":

In this game the player is not allowed to return the pass so he\she must look for a third player. This promotes looking around with the head on a swivel, as well as supporting the puck carrier by all
teammates.

2.18. ALL PASSES MUST BE OFF THE ICE:

This is good practice for lifting the puck over sticks with a saucer pass, work on making the puck land flat on the ice.

2.19. "GIVE AND GO" GAME:

The first pass receiver must return the puck to the passer who can then pass to another player, who must now give and go. This game teaches players to support by following their pass.

2.21. GAME ALLOWING "DROP PASSES ONLY":

The players must cross and leave the puck for their teammate or he\she may pick it off the stick. This game promotes crossing and dropping as well as accelerating with the puck to get in front of teammates.

2.22. GAME WITH 7-10 CONSECUTIVE PASSES:

Points are given to the team that can make 7-10 consecutive passes. At a more advanced level no return passes are allowed.

2.23. TRANSITION FROM DEFENSE TO OFFENSE; SUPPORTING THE ATTACK

As we have stated before, the first player back must be supported by his\her teammates when he\she is going for a loose puck. If his back is to the play it is very important that she\he is able to give a safe outlet pass to someone who can see up ice. The second player back must support the first player from the front of the net. If possible he should screen to hold up fore checkers. Because the second player can see up ice he\he must tell the first player if he\she has a player on him\her or where the quick outlet pass should go.

The calls are;

1. GO- meaning the player has time to turn with the puck and skate up ice.

2. SETUP-against passive fore checking or when the puck has been dumped in for a line change the first player can carry the puck behind the net for a setup breakout.

3. BANK-the second player skates to the other side of the net and takes a pass that is banked off the boards behind the net.

4. REVERSE-the first player skates hard towards the back of the net and when he\she feels the fore checker pressuring put the puck off the boards towards the corner where the second player picks it up
and skates the other way.

5. BOARDS-a short pass to the third player coming back along the boards on the strong side. This is either a quick pass or reverse to number three on the boards or it is a COUNTER where the puck carrier drive skates to the back of the net, stops and passes back to number three, who must stay on the boards.

6. MIDDLE-a quick pass to the fourth player who is mirroring the movement of the puck from the mid slot area and skating towards the outside lane.

7. RIM-a hard pass around the boards to the fifth man who picks the pass up along the weak-side boards.

It is critical that the first outlet pass is done quickly so the transition to offense can be done before the opposition defense has reacted. If the first outlet pass is quick, or the first player turns and can see up ice, a fast break can develop if the puck is moved up ice within the first three seconds. This is the first option if total puck control is gained. It is important that the players coming back think support until possession of the puck is certain. As soon as the puck carrier is able to see up ice the transition to offensive thinking
begins.

Players must read the forward in the middle before switching lanes. If the fourth player swings to the strong side lane, then the number three player can either go up the boards and into the middle high or cut
into the middle lane. If the defender has a lot of time the fourth player may swing to the weak side and now the fifth player can cut to the middle or skate down the boards and then into the middle to create
depth in the attack. The key principles are: there must be strong side support, and only change lanes when the player from the middle lane is filling your lane.

2.24. ATTACKING WITH THE 1-2-3-4-5 PRINCIPLE:

By counting teammates ahead of them, players learn to read and react to the play. Number one is the first player to cross the blue line. Number two supports by driving to the far post or crossing with number one. Number three should trail from the mid slot area if two goes to the post. If one and two have crossed then number three should drive to the far post. Number four is the weak side defenseman and should join the attack as far as the top of the face-off circle then read whether it is worth the risk to go further. Number
five supports the attack from the blue line on the strong side. This gives a three wave 2-2-1 attack with two players deep, two in the high slot area and one back at the blue line.

2.25. GAME ATTACKING WITH SHOOT IN AND FORE-CHECK:

The attacking team must shoot the puck into the offensive zone and fore-check in order to regain puck possession. This game can be used to work on fore-checking systems as well as practicing defending the fore-check. On the fore-check the first player must create immediate pressure from the inside out, the second player reads whether to; double team, cover a pass to the defenseman or back check. The third player mirrors the puck from the mid slot; ready to react to the pass to the strong-side boards, fill for a pinching defenseman, or cover the center lane. The fourth player supports from the middle of the blue line and pinches on a wide rim. The fifth player supports from the strong side blue line, either pinching on a
board pass or quickly locking on the first forward breaking out of the zone. The key is to read whether the first fore checker makes contact. If contact is made, one should fore-check aggressively, outnumbering the defense in the corners. If the defending team gets control behind the net then use a trap by forcing the puck to one side then overloading that side with four players to cause a turnover.

2.26. USING DEFENSEMEN IN THE OFFENSIVE ZONE:

Players should avoid being forced into the corner, but instead pivot at the hash marks and pass back or across to the defenseman or put the puck deep, if only high risk plays are available. These plays have a certain amount of high risk because the fourth and fifth man can easily give up outnumbered counter attacks if they mishandle the puck, so only safe passes should be made and shots from the point must go past the first wave of defenders. On a deep cycle in the corner the fourth man should look for opportunities to go to the far post. On a high cycle the fifth man can jump into the play. The puck can also be passed to the weak side defenseman corner to maintain possession, the third player has to cover the point. Don't let your team be outnumbered 5-3 it the offensive end by having the third attacker only as a back checker and the fourth and fifth player passive. Teach red and green light situations and allow your players to read the play. They all have to practice filling for each other and even the forwards must learn to play defensive situations when you have your defense jumping in. The reads depend upon the situation, the score and the time left in a game. Teach the players when it is a green light and when it is a red light situation.

2.27. FACE-OFFS:

In a controlled scrimmage have face-offs in all areas and teach offensive and defensive concepts

2.28. PLAYING A PUCK CONTROL GAME:

To develop a flow type of team offense, play games that concentrate on puck control. In this scrimmage the point is not to score until all players have handled the puck in the offensive zone, while the players
interchange positions following the principles of offense; using width, depth and support at all times. This game teaches the players to read the play and move into open lanes and supporting positions.

2.29. GAMES STRESSING WINNING LOOSE PUCKS IN THE OFFENSIVE ZONE:

The closest player must go after "loose pucks" as quickly as possible. The other players support according to their distance from the puck. Dump the puck in from the neutral zone and fore-check in this game to create these loose puck situations.

2.30. GAME WITH ONLY DEFENSEMEN SHOOTING:

Play a game where only goals scored by direct or deflected shots from the blue line or from passes from the defense are counted. This promotes the players tight turning and passing to the point, as well as
screening and tipping. Defensemen should only shoot if they can miss the first checker, otherwise they should pass or put the puck behind the net. The other defenseman supports from the middle and one forward should come back toward the puck on the strong side. This strong side support rule should be used in all situations, it is almost like setting up in an overload power play when the puck is at the point, giving the point man at least one safe possession pass.

2.31. OFFENSIVE POSSESSION BEHIND THE OPPONENT'S NET:

When the puck is behind the opponent's net number two and three should move towards the face-off dots where it is hard for defenders to cover or they can screen the defenseman. A defenseman can move into the slot for a pass if the defenders backs are turned.

2.32. GAME WITH CYCLING IN THE OFFENSIVE CORNER:

To create space from the corner the puck carrier skates up the boards, if he\she is pressured he passes back to the corner where his teammate cycles to the corner from near the front of the net. The passer becomes the third man and the third man cycles toward the puck on the net side.

2.33. GAME WITH REGROUPING IN THE NEUTRAL ZONE:

Play a game where the offensive team must pass the puck back and regroup at least once before they enter the offensive zone. The same principles of the 1-2-3-4-5 breakout are used whenever the last two players have the puck. If all of the forwards are covered the defenseman should carry the puck and the strong side supporting forward can swing in behind and support.

2.34. SUPPORTING THE PUCK ON OFFENSE BY ATTACKING AS A TEAM TRANSITION TO
DEFENSE

In order to give more options for the puck carrier, remember -- when the team has the puck, everyone supports the attack. A game with the rule that a goal only counts if everyone is in the attacking zone can
emphasize this offensive support. This can be encouraged by not allowing a goal until all players on the team are over the blue line in the offensive zone.

Role Three:
Checking the puck carrier, individual defensive skill games

3.1. DEFENSIVE SIDE GAME; PLAYERS HAVE NO STICKS:

Two players using a pylon as a goal have a contest to see who can touch the pylon while on offense. The defensive player stays between the offensive player and the pylon goal. He\she faces and stays square to the offensive player and tries to stop him\her from touching the pylon.

3.2. DEFENSIVE SIDE GAME WITH DEFENDERS STICK UPSIDE DOWN:

Two players play one on one using one goal. The defensive player stays on the defensive side preventing the offensive player from scoring. Play 30 seconds then switch positions.

3.3. DEFENSIVE SIDE GAME OF ONE ON ONE USING ONE GOAL:

Small goals or pylons are placed along the sideboards. The offensive player tries to score, the defensive player stays between the puck carrier and the net. When the defensive player gets the puck he\she skates to mid ice then turns around and tries to score on the same goal against his\her opponent.

3.4. ONE GOAL GAME; DEFENDER PLAYS WITHOUT A STICK:

The offensive player tries to score against the defender with no stick. The defender stays between the offensive player and the net on the "defensive side". Play 15-30 seconds and then switch. The winner is the player who allows the least goals against.

3.5. GAME OF ONE ON ONE STRESSING THE DEFENSIVE SIDE:

The players a play full, half or cross-ice game but the defender learns that he\she knows where the puck carrier is going. He\she is going to the net. The coach teaches the defender to always stay between the
puck carrier and her\his own goal. This is the first step in teaching good defensive technique. When back checking the defender must get her\his shoulder in front of the puck carrier to get on the defensive
side.

3.6. ONE ON ONE GAME OF DEFEND-ATTACK-LEAVE METHOD STRESSING THAT THE DEFENSE GET A TIGHT GAP BEFORE THE RED LINE:

By playing a tight gap the defense can control the rush. The players are lined up along the sideboards, there can be one team on each side of the ice. The offensive player carries the puck towards the defensive players goal. The defensive player tries to keep a tight gap, not backing in too far. When the offensive player crosses the red line, the offensive players teammate follows the play as far as the blue line, ready to defend against the attack when the original defender rushes the puck. The new player defends, attacks and
when the puck is over the blue line, leaves back to the line up. A great flow game for all players to develop both offensive and defensive skills. The coach can allow passes to the point, the point man must either shoot or pass right away, they cannot go in and shoot. The defender covers the first attacker, moving him\her from the front of the net, controlling the stick, or body on the defensive side and stick in the passing lane. This game can be played up to 3 on 3 and also in situations like 2-1, 1-2, 2-2, 2-3, 3-2.

3.7 GAME STRESSING IMMEDIATE PRESSURE BY THE CLOSEST DEFENDER:

In a small area game, stress that the closest defending player pressures the puck. It is important to get immediate pressure on the puck from the inside out. This delays the attack, deflects it wide and hurries the puck carrier into making mistakes. Deep in the zone the defender must quickly close the gap and make contact if the players is not in good control of the puck and if the offensive player has good control, then maintain the defensive side by stopping and going back, staying on the defensive side. When in trouble get the stick in between the attackers legs and high in the crotch, to avoid tripping.

3.8 HALF ICE TRANSITION GAME OF ONE ON ONE THEN ONE ON TWO .

One offensive player attacks one on one versus a defender. A back checker follows the play from the boards and gives defensive support from a few meters away on the defensive side. When the defense
regains the puck the back checker skates to the red line and turns back trying to score on a new defender who has skated from the lineup on the boards and plays a defensive one on one.

Role Four:
Defensive support; team defensive skill games
Principles:
- all attack-defend-leave half ice and full and cross-ice games can isolate the defensive zone team play concepts of 2-1 up to 5-6.
- all defend-attack-leave half and full ice games can isolate the defensive zone team play skills of 2-1 up to 5-6 as well as the penalty killing skills.
- all full, half and cross ice games where one defensive player waits outside of the defensive zone are good for practicing defensive skills in outnumbered situations. e.g. 5-5 full ice game with one defensive forward staying in the neutral zone creates a 5-4 in the zone.

4.1. TWO v. TWO USING ONE GOAL NEAR THE BOARDS:

The defensive players cover one offensive player each. The first player stays on the defensive side of the puck carrier. The second defender supports by covering the pass receiver from the defensive side, with the stick in the passing lane. When the defenders get the puck they skate to mid ice then turn around and attack the same goal.

4.2. PRACTICE COMING BACK DEEP IN A FULL ICE GAME OF 2 v 2, OR 3 v 3:

The coach emphasizes that the closest checker gives immediate pressure on the puck and deflects the attack from the middle. The second player in the zone supports from the front of the net and the third player supports in a position to beat the two offensive players to the net and react to a pass to the supporting forward.

4.3. LEARNING DEFENSIVE PRINCIPLES:

Play a 2-2, 3-3,4-4 or 5-5 game focusing on defensive coverage. The defending players; stay between the puck and the goal, force the puck wide, finish checks, cover their checks, immediate pressure on the puck from inside to outside "PLAYING OFF THE BACK SHOULDER OF THE PUCK CARRIER". All players have a one on one responsibility in their own zone. If someone loses a one on one then the supporting player has a 1-2, he\she doesn't simply leave his\her player uncovered.

4.4. DEFENDING THE SLOT

Play a full ice game of 2-2, 3-3, 4-4, 5-5, with shifts of 30 to 60 seconds. The main principle of defending is simple. It is to control the slot area in front of your goal. Concentrate on determining who is covering who by the red line and deflect the puck out of the middle lane. All players maintain defensive side body position and keep sticks in the passing lanes.
4.5. DEFENDING THE SLOT WITH A PASSIVE 2-1-2

Game inside blue line. The defensive team stands in the slot area in a 2-1-2 formation. They are in a tight box with one forward in the middle. The defenders are only allowed to take one step. If the puck is coming out of the corner the defenseman takes one step toward the puck and the forward in the middle fills the corner of the box. The weak-side forward sags into the slot and the strong side forward collapses down one stride. The offensive team can do anything it wants to score. The defenders keep their sticks in the passing lanes. Have the same thing going on at both ends. The offense gets one minute to score, then switch and allow the defense to attack. The main principle of defending is simple, it is to control the slot area in front of your goal. When teaching defensive zone coverage the coach should show the players where to skate back to in order to protect the slot area. Defend from inside out, always staying between the opponent and the net. As the puck gets closer to the goal more man to man coverage is used on players without the puck. The slot area is where the defenders skate to on defense trying to force the puck to the outside and up the boards.

4.6. ONE THIRD ICE GAME WITH AGGRESSIVE 2-1-2 DEFENSE

The defense sets up in a tight box with one forward in the middle. The description of the "one checker pressure and a box behind" follows. The offense starts with the puck at the blue line. One defensive player
from one corner pressures the puck from the inside out. When he\she does this the middle forward rotates to his place on the corner of the box and the box slides from one side to the other overloading an area of the ice. The remaining four players have sticks in the passing lanes and are on the defensive side of the offensive players. When pressuring the puck the defender skates in straight lines and always finishes checks. The middle forward supports the 2 on 1 attack from the inside of the box, always in a position to maintain the defensive side of his\her man while supporting the first checker. When the play goes to another area the closest player forces the play in the same way. All players are responsible to cover one attacker.
4.7. DEFENDING 3-3, 2-2, IN DEFENSIVE ZONE:

In a full ice game each team leaves two players in the neutral zone. When the defending team gets the puck they pass to the neutral zone and there will be a 2-2 situation at the other end. After the players have the basic flow of the game, make it more game-like by having the next offensive players waiting for the puck at the top of the circle and the defense standing on the blue line. If the puck is brought above the circles, the new offensive players can check the puck carrier as in a game. If the puck is dumped to the new defense, they should shoot it back into the zone.

One line plays two defense and one forward as a back checker while defending and the other two forwards attacking two on two the other way. The other line has three forwards on offense and two defensemen for the 2 on 2 at the other end. Many other numerical situations can be practiced using this Attack-Defend-Pass-Leave sequence. Have all forwards take turns being the back checker. Halfway through the game change so the other defense play 2 on 2 and the other team has a back checker.

A five on five in each end can be created by simply having the next forwards and defenseman follow the play into the zone and play as a regular game. The forwards leave after the puck is over the offensive blue line; the defenseman and back checker leave when they have cleared the puck.

4.8. PLAY A GAME OF 5-5 STRESSING DEFENSIVE ZONE COVERAGE; 1-2-3-4-5 PRINCIPLE:

As the players come back into their zone they cover the opposition according to their closeness to the play. They play a combined man-to-man zone defense. Number one covers the puck carrier, number two the front of the net, number three supports the play from the mid slot area covering 3-3 with the first two players back (usually defensemen). Number four covers the mid high slot area where the far defenseman may come in as the fourth man on the attack. Number five covers the strong side defenseman. Everyone
stays on the "defensive side" of their man with their sticks on the ice denying passes to the slot. When the puck is in deep the first three players play three on three deep in the zone. The closest player checks the puck carrier and is supported by the second player who covers the front of the net and the third player who covers the supporting forward while supporting the first checker. Four and five have zone coverage high. When the puck is at the point, everyone covers man to man from the defensive side. The low defenders must allow the goalie to see the puck, and control the offensive sticks to prevent tip-ins and deflections.

4.9. GAME WITH STICKS UPSIDE DOWN IN THE DEFENSIVE ZONE:

A good teaching technique is to practice defense while holding the sticks upside down in the defensive zone. This helps the players to focus on staying between their check and the net, with their shoulders
square. They must stop and start and learn to always play the body deep in their own zone. The coach can blow the whistle and signal that the sticks may be held properly and the other team can defend with their sticks upside down.

4.10. GAME PRACTICING THE DEFENSEMEN READING THE QUICK COUNTER ATTACK:

Play a 4-4 or 5-5 game with two forwards floating in the neutral zone. Have the defending team try long passes to the forwards in the neutral zone. The defensemen at the blue line will have to read and react when to cover for the long pass to the forwards in the neutral zone.

4.11. ALL FIVE HAVE THE PUCK IN FRONT OF THEM

This is the strongest defensive position to be in as no one is trapped behind the play. This is a passive fore-checking style that allows the offense to turn the puck up ice and then deflects the puck to one side of the rink and outnumbers the attackers.

Whenever the puck is above the circles in the defensive zone it must be cleared over the blue line. In the offensive zone dump or carry the puck into the corner or behind the net. It is a safe play to make when
only high risk offensive options are available to the puck carrier.

4.12. GAMES TEACHING FORE-CHECKING WITH DEFENSIVE TRANSITION COVERAGE:

In this game the offensive team dumps the puck in on the rush and fore checks. When attacking in the offensive zone and the puck is loose, players must support thinking both offense and defense. The closest player must go after "loose pucks" as quickly as possible. The other players support according to their distance from the puck, the second player reads either double team, react to the pass or back check, the third player reacts to the pass to the boards, covers for a pinching defenseman or back checks. The fourth player supports from the far post at the blue line, and pinches on a rim. The fifth player either supports the play from the blue line or takes a pre-pinch position, depending on what fore-checking system is being used. The third man would play high in the slot when pinching, lower when he is reacting to the boards pass.

4.13. A 2-2, 3-3, 4-4, 5-5 GAME STRESSING DEFENSIVE TEAM PLAY:

The team must have a style of play that allows for simple transition from offense to defense and defense to offense. The most efficient way to do this is to have the last three players defending in a triangle, with two men back. If the back checker can force the puck carrier wide before the red line he\she should do this. If the puck carrier is in front of the back checker she\he should let the defenseman play him\her and cover a trailer. The 2-3-4 rule should apply; 2 players are always at the offensive blue line, 3 are back deflecting the play wide by the red line and 4 are back by the defensive blue line, this fourth player will fill the middle if the first back checker has taken the puck carrier wide or he will cover the far wing if the defense are playing the puck carrier. This style protects the middle lane and allows the back checker to; force the puck wide, play 2-2 crossing situations with the defenseman or pick up the trailer on a rush. The other defenseman covers the man going to the far post if the back checker picks up the trailer. In this way you avoid two defensemen in one corner with a forward covering the front of the net, as happens when the forward back checks on the weak side winger. The triangle also prevents the attacker from going to the middle when the defense backs in too fast. Transition is also easy from this triangular positioning, as the breakout pattern is easily begun. If passive fore-checking 1-2-2 was used because of a set up behind the net then the first back checker forces the play into a wide lane, the second back checker forces the puck, the third back checker fills the middle lane and the strong side defenseman stands up the play. The weak side defenseman covers the attacker going to the post. The neutral zone is the best area to create turnovers and to go into offensive transition.

4.14. PLAY 4-4 FOCUSING ON TEAM PLAY CONCEPTS:

Forwards cover the defense and defense cover forwards. Center goes to point on face-off.

4.15. CLEARING THE FRONT OF THE NET:

The D1, 64 game of full ice 5-5 with 5-3 inside the blue lines and two forwards in the neutral zone can be modified to practice clearing out the front of the net. The rule is that the attacking defensemen cannot
come closer than the top of the circles and must shoot or pass within one second. The three defenders play 3-3 against the offensive forwards. Goals only count on shots from the point, tip-ins, deflections or rebounds. The defenders must learn to clear the opponents out so the goalie can see the shot and the attackers sticks are tied up.

4.16. FACE-OFFS:

In a controlled scrimmage have face-offs in all areas and teach offensive and defensive concepts

4.17. ACTIVE FORE-CHECKING:

The first players force the puck wide, the second player pressure a pass to the defensive partner, third player mirror the puck from the mid slot and react to the pass to the strong side wing or fill on a rim for the pinching defenseman, the fourth player pinch on a wide rim, support the play from the middle at the blue line, the fifth player support on the strong side point.
4.19. TWO FORE CHECKERS

Two fore checkers aggressively force the play while the other three support in a triangle defending the middle lane. The first fore checker forces the puck, while the second double teams if the puck is loose or
reacts to a pass to the defenseman. With the third player high the defense can pinch from either side.

4.20. THREE FORE CHECKERS

This is a common style on the smaller North American rinks. If this style is chosen it is very important that the third man slide back into the mid slot area so that he\she can lock the center and back check. It is a very effective fore-checking style if the players are able to read and react and have the discipline to become the third man. If there is no third man the other team will get many 3-2's.

4.21. DEFENSE STRESS GETTING A TIGHT GAP BEFORE THE RED LINE USING A SEQUENCE OF DEFEND, ATTACK, LEAVE IN A 2-2, 3-3 GAME:

By playing a tight gap the defense can control the rush. The players are lined up along the sideboards, there can be one team on each side of the ice. The offensive player carries the puck towards the defensive players goal. The defensive players try to keep a tight gap, not backing in too far. When the offensive player crosses the red line, the attacking player's teammates follows into the zone, ready to defend against the attack when the original defender rushes the puck. The new players defend, attack, and when the puck is over the blue line, leave and return to the line up. A great flow game for all players to develop both offensive and defensive skills. Passes to the point can be allowed but the point man must pass or shoot right away. The two or three defenders deep in the zone maintain their low coverage.

4.22. GAME PRACTICING DEFENDING THE PLAY OUT OF THE CORNER:

In this game the rule is that goals only count if they are started by plays out of the offensive corners. The closest player defends the attack out of the corner. If he\she reads that the opponent is not in full control of the puck, has their back to the play or is within half a stick length of the player, the defender should play the body and pin the attacker to the boards. If the player is under full control and is facing up ice, the defender should close the gap then pivot and skate backwards, maintaining his "defensive side" so that he\she can get his\her stick between the attackers legs and high in the crotch making contact with the player outside of the slot area. If the player passes the defender stays with him\her eliminating the give and go. "Both the man and the puck cannot come out of the corner."

4.23. FOUR PLAYERS FORE-CHECK:

Pressure fore-check, the first four fore checkers cover four lanes while the fifth player is at the strong side blue line. All checks must be completed.
4.24. CHANGE ON FLY, DEFEND, ATTACK, DEFEND, SHOOT-IN:

Practice for changing lines on the fly. When a new line goes out they defend, attack, defend then shoot the puck into the corner opposite their bench. If they have trouble getting the puck out on the first rush, then dump the puck in on first rush and change.

4.24. A TRANSITION GAME OF 2-1 THEN 3-3 IN THE DEFENSIVE ZONE.

Two players attack from the red line 2-1. When the puck crosses the blue line two forwards from the defending team follow the play into the zone. The back checkers assume the role of defenseman in front of net and supporting forward. When they regain the puck they breakout as far as the red line and then the two forwards, turn back and attack two on one versus a new defenseman on the other team. In a full ice game the new forwards attack a new defenseman who has followed the play inside the blue line. Use this method to play games and tournaments. Other situations such as 2-2 to 4-4, 3-1 to 4-4 and 3-2 to 5-5 can be played. It is a good way to keep a continuous flow going, practice team play and change the players
efficiently.

4.28. GAME OF OUTNUMBER SITUATIONS WITH BACK CHECKERS SUPPORTING

Start a full ice game of 2-1 with two back checkers and a new defenseman following the play into the zone. When the defenders break out 2-1 both of the original attackers back check as far as the red line or until one of them covers the supporting forward. They play 2-2 deep in the zone and two new attackers and one defenseman follow the play into the zone making it a 3-4 attack.

This game can be also be played 3-1, two attackers back check, causing a three on three deep in zone and 3 forwards and one defender ready to go the other way. The new defenders stay above the circles. As a 3-2 game one forward back checks, making it 3-3 deep in the zone and three forwards and two defensemen waiting to go the other way

I was at a seminar a few weeks ago and when I asked Bill Peters (Caroline HC and former Detroit AC) about the players doing this on their own he told me that Pavel Datsyuk gets this going to work on both keep-away and take-aways.

Hockey-Sweden is dependent on many participants for continued success. We are disproportionately successful on the international stage in comparison to the country’s size and population. A main reason for the success story is the annual efforts of all the Swedish youth coaches.

We humans often want to emphasize some single intervention or some single person when we try to understand and explain the reason and the background for success and successful achievements. Unfortunately, it’s not so simple. It is more about all the peoples’ hard work together with the right guiding principles and the right objectives.

Without all of our youth coaches’ everyday work, we would never have been a top nation in hockey. Sweden is currently number 1 on the IIHF’s rankings of the world’s best hockey nations. Unbelievable! But – if we want to keep ourselves there, there is no opportunity to sit back and take it easy. On the contrary, we need to increase the pace/ to raise the bar.

The vast majority – well, almost all – of the Swedish youth coaches are volunteers and unpaid. In spite of this the demands from society are many times higher than those previously on such hired and trained teachers. With this column, I want to pay tribute to the amazing Swedish youth coaches, while hopefully providing some good advice for the coming season.

10 good tips:

1 / Make a plan for next season. Plan how much and what you want to practice. Training Planning is important from Tre Kronor Hockey School and all the way up. Use the Swedish Ice hockey Association’s “Ice Hockey’s ABCs” as help. There are many useful and good guidelines on how to plan the season.

2 / Gather parents and players and go through how you have planned the season. It’s always good to be clear and tell what the season will look like. It builds a basic foundation in the important relationship with the parent group. In this area there are good parent education materials to use. They can be found on Swedish Ice Hockey Association’s instructional site “Hockeyakademin.se“.

3 / Add a lot of time to practicing hockey’s basic skills. The five key basics are; I) skating, II) puck handling/feints, III) passing/receiving, IV) shooting/goal scoring, and V) checking/checks. If these areas are not learned during youth hockey times, one may not get it again in adulthood! So – a lot of technique/skill training! Lots of suggested drills are available in the Swedish Ice Hockey Association’s educational materials.

4 / Also practice technique/skills “off-ice”. Work with imitation of skating and skating jumps, dribbling and passing wooden balls, practice shooting on the shooting platform, practice on checking and battling drills. Do not forget the useful and fun street hockey. Where not only techniques/skills are developed, but also the game concepts and game understanding.

5 / Start with strength training early. Preferably from 7 years of age. When we talk about the right kind of strength training, not “bodybuilding” at the gym. Please use your own body weight as resistance. Professor Tonkonogi’s research in this area has led to a whole new approach to weight training for children. More detailed advice can be found in the Swedish Ice Hockey Association’s educational materials. Check on “Hockeyakademin.se.”

6 / Work a great deal with games in various forms. Scrimmage on the whole rink, in the end zones and in small areas are good drills. Play 5 on 5, but also for example 3 vs. 3 and 2 vs 2. Use various conditions such as two pucks, direct/touch passing, direct shot/one-timers to finish off the play, etc. The Swedish coaching legend Åke “The Professor” Lundstrom said and wrote in the 60?s that scrimmaging is the best hockey drill.

7 / Creating an environment where players feel joy of playing, skating fun and where you have fun together. It’s no secret that learning works best in an environment where you have fun. Try as a coach to think positively and act positively. Emphasize what is good, and teach the kids to praise and encourage each other. Everyone needs praise. It is underestimated, and works better than other hocus pocus.

8 / Talk a lot of hockey with the players and encourage the players to talk a lot of hockey with each other. Discuss and explain solutions to various game situations. Listen to the players and learn yourself. Use tactical boards, and the resources available for them. Explain drills and educate the players theoretically in why you are practicing this or that, and what happens in your body when you are working in a certain way.

9 / Teach the players to compete. Use many drills with competitive elements . Relays, shooting competitions, tournaments in small team games, technique/skill courses based on time limits, battling drills on the ice and off-ice, penalty shot competitions, etc. It’s not negative to battle and do their best to win, but it is important to learning both how to win and lose. The effort is more important than the result. Teach the players to do their best and not worry about the outcome.

10 / See to it that all players have an individual development plan. It’s every Swedish players right. Before the season then the coach should sit down with each player and draws up a plan for the player’s development. The plan will, for instance contain the player’s strengths and parts to develop in terms of techniques/skills, tactics, physical capacity, psychology, nutrition, games, etc. Furthermore coaches and players together should set up objectives for the different areas. No need for whistles as the players can see when to start. Face the puck, pass hard, give targets, shoot and follow the shot and stop at the net.

Description:

1. Forwards and defense leave from diagonal four blue lines.
2. F1 at each end pass back to D1 and mirror D1.
3. D1 skate across and pass up the far wing to F2.
4. F1 and F2 attack the net from both ends.
5. Start at the other diagonal blue lines and F3 pass to D2.
6. F3 mirror D2 across the ice and attack 2-0 with F4.
7. Keep this rhythm alternating sides.

* Option: Have the D join the rush and get a trailer pass. If there is a group less than 18 you may want to go one group at a time and then the D could join and get a pass from the corner to shoot while F's screen.

Description:

1. Players are lined up on one side.
2. One set of D at each blue line.

4. Defense hinge and then pass and turnover the puck to D3-D4.
5. D3-D4-F1-F2-F3 attack 5-2 vs. D1-D2.

This is the progressive program that Juhani Wahlsten and myself designed for the Austrian Ice Hockey Association. I have replaced the German text with English. There is a logical progression of skills but what makes it unique is that the program also has a progression of good playing habits and game understanding.

Level 0 is the starting point and begins with a plan to teach 'non-skaters' how to move in all directions on the ice.

The individual skills of the first and third game playing roles are practiced at an advanced level with body checking skills being emphasized. Game playing role 2 'offensive support' is the focus during the team play drills and games. After completing levels 0-3 the players are now skilled enough to work on more advanced team play. Game situations have more transitions where the players must read and act according to the constantly changing situations.

Quickly transition from offense to defense. Communicate coverage. Attack quickly then work cycle and back to net to change the point of attack. Screen, tip on offense, box out, seal sticks to the outside on defence.

Description:

1. Two nets in line with the dots on the goal line.
2. Teams line up facing the net they are attacking.
3. Start with the coach shoot the puck in and play from 1-1 to 3-3.
4. One player is the Joker at each offensive point and can pass or shoot but not skate in.
5. Pass to first player in line for the next group to go onto offense.
6. The team that was attacking and lost the puck must quickly defend the net on the other side of the zone.
7. Rotation is attack, defend, return to the line up.

Defense stay between attacker and net with a tight gap on the 1-1, attack with speed, use skate and stick fakes. One the 2-1 attack with ‘one high and one low, one fast and one slow’, while the defender delay the play and take away the most dangerous shot and deny play across the middle of the goal.

Description:

A. Defenders line up at each end in diagonal corners and attacker in the other diagonal corners.
B. #1 attacker from each corner leave with a puck, skate to the blue line and pass to the #2 near the far blue line.
C. #2 make a deception move and pass to #1 in the neutral zone.

It is really important for players to have the basic side to side motion when skating. This is a short video on skating technique that is more than worthwhile to watch.

Speaking of Wally, he was at our Tuesday practice and suggested we enforce the idea of having 'sticks on the ice, in the lanes and on the puck.' When we played the cross ice games Wally watched and blew the whistle to stop the play and enforced. Everyone does 1 push up and the offending player or players do 5. Wally looked to see if the player realized he was the offender. It was very effective and we will use the same rule to enforce 'face the puck'. Many other habits can be stressed using the 'push up rule.'

Drills that start from the 4 blue stripes on the boards.

Drills from the 4 blue lines are very popular because the middle of the ice is empty and you can do skills, regroups or game situations either full or half ice.

We code the drills starting at the blue line as;

B600 is when the drills run from the 4 blue lines and the players pass and shoot vs. zero opponents.

C600 run from the 4 blue lines and are game situation drills usually 1-1 to 2-2 but they could be up to 3-2.

I have put a pdf. booklet together with about sixty B600 and C600 drills that I have posted so far.

The Arena in Vienna

This is the arena where Juhani Wahlsten and I introduced coaches from Austria to the development program we developed for the Austrian Ice Hockey Association http://www.eishockey.at/aus-und-fortbildung/ (ours is the parts titled ABC). Juhani did the classes in German (one of the seven languages he speaks and I did the on ice in this rink and a practice rink that is attached at the back.) There is meeting room under the seats where we did the classes. We also did off ice in a nearby park. There is glass all around the outside of the rink, which is very common in Europe. One of the nicer rinks.

The Austrian program translated to English can be found as PDF attachments at the bottom of these postings. It is a good scope and sequence for teaching both the skills and the good habits to be a complete hockey player.

Canucks Team Building Activities

Perry Pearn who coached NAIT in the ACAC vs. my SAIT for 4 years before moving on to higher leagues and Willie Desjardins, who I was an asst. for at the U of Calgary for 6 years run both on and off team building games with the Canucks. Steve Carlyle (Canada National Team and WHA Oilers) came up to me last week and asked; 'What happened to us?' He was on the staff my first year at the U of Calgary and the other coaches were Willie (Vancouver), Mike Johnston (Pittsburg) and Drew Remenda (was video coach for the Ducks and now is a colour man on NHL TV). We stayed at home instead of traveling around coaching and were both teachers. The next year Steve, Mike and Drew had left and Slava Lener (asst. in Florida and now head of Czech hockey) and Terry Johnson joined the staff. Willie left after the 94 season when we lost to the U of Lethbridge coached by Mike Babcock in the Canada West finals and went on a two year leave to coach in Japan. Tim Bothwell came in as interim coach and they told him to keep Terry and I on because Willie was returning. Willie won the Japanese championship his second season and they offered him so much money that he stayed and coached in Japan for about six years before returning and taking over the Medicine Hat Tigers. Tim took over and we won Canada West and went to the final 4 in Toronto 95 and 96 with the team Willie had recruited, mostly because we went on a three week tour of Scandanavia (in the summer of 93, that I arranged because of Juhani) and that attracted a lot of top major junior players. Terry quit coaching at the U after one season with Tim and I left after two. Tim stayed a few more years and then moved on to be an asst. in Atlanta for a season. 95 and 96 are the last two years the U of C has won Canada West. Willie won in 90, so I was part of the team for 3 of those teams.

So I guess the reason I tell this story is to say that coaching at the university level gives you the opportunity to meet and work with and against some very knowledgeable people and I am grateful that I got the chance to do it.

The most significant thing though was meet Juhani Wahlsten, when he was brought to Calgary to do a coaching course by the then Dean of PE George Kingston. We hit it off because we are both PE teacher/hockey coaches who use 'games to teach the game' and it resulted in me going to Finland and traveling around doing seminars with him and the Russian icon Vladimir Yursinov. This opened opportunities for me to run summer camps in Hamar, Norway, Vierumaki, Finland and Pennsylvania. These led to camps in Jasper, New York, Los Angeles, Norther Michigan, Detroit, Delaware, Guatalajara, Mexico, Seoul, Korea, Boston, Vienna and Salzburg, Austria and I just got an inquiry from Atlantic City. I think I have traveled to Europe twenty times for coaching camps, attending conferences and to give seminars. So hockey has been good to me.

I am enjoying coaching this Bantam team and Wally Kozak is my mentor. He attends a lot of the games and I had him run the last 20 minutes of today's practice.

DT400 Low Zone Battles with Jokers at Point - Youth

I made this game up last night by moving the players up to the top of the circle and the rule was that the Jokers at the point must shoot a wrist or snap shot and couldn't pass. The focus was to get the attackers to screen, tip and rebound and the defenders to communicate who covers who, box out, take sticks, seal stick to the outside and battle for rebounds AFTER they tie up the sticks. A good sequence is to start with 1-1, then 2-2 and then 3-3 and have about 20" shifts. I will get a video the next time we do it.

Key Points:

Attackers must go to the net to screen, for rebounds, tips and cycle low. Defenders must talk and stay man on man unless impossible and then switch. Box out, seal sticks to the outside, tie up sticks in the slot.

Description:

1. The game is played from the top of the circles down.
2. Play from 1-1 to 3-3.
3. Players must pass to the point to go onto offense.
4. Joker at the point must take a wrist or snap shot.

* Keep score and when in the teaching mode stop the play and have player who doesn't cover someone do 5 push-ups and his teammates 1 PU.

It has been great having Wally Kozak as my mentor. We played against each other for years and he has had a lot of hockey experiences coaching with Dave King, being the head scout for Canada's women's team and working with many national team coaches, etc..

Meeting and working with you since 1985 gave affirmation that how I was teaching PE and coaching by using games was very effective and a lot more enjoyable than standing in line and waiting for your turn to do a simple skill. I and you got a lot of negative push back for having this philosophy but now it is the 'new way' to coach and teach. So maybe all of those years of paddling against the stream were worthwhile.

Key Points:

Middle drive with F2 driving hard to the net. Practice the various entries and players attack in their lanes.

Description:

1. Leave from the end in groups of three.
2. Coach give resistance at the blue line.
3. First wing pass to middle to far wing who shoots while F2 goes hard to the net.
4. If players mess up they repeat the drill.
5. Shoot to the far pad for a rebound.
6. Wing to middle to far wing who skates to the big ice and the centre takes the ice behind for a wide pass.
7. Far wing drive to the net and new middle lane player trail.
8. F1 pass to F2 in the middle who passes to F3 on the wing; F3 skates to the big ice and pass wide to the F1 breaking down the wide wing.
9. F2 middle drive hard to the net and F3 become the trailer.

Key Points:

Do everything with speed. D skate between dots before passing. Attackers make the first pass early. A 2-1 is really a 2-2 with the defender and the goalie. Defender identify the most dangerous attacker.

Description:

1. D1 skate back and get the puck placed below the goal line by the coach.
2. D1 pass to F1 and follow.
3. F1 regroup with D2.
4. F2 join F1 and attack D1 2 on 1.
5. D2 go back and retrieve a new puck placed by the coach at the opposite end.
6. D2 passes to F3 who regroups with D3 and F4 join.
7. Repeat this flow.

Attacker battle to keep his stick free and defender keep the defensive side and tie up the stick when it is exposed. Attacker shoot and go for the rebound and defender keep the stick on the puck and box out after a shot.

Description:

I took this video when various international U20 teams were practicing during the 2012 IIHF World U20 Championships in Calgary. Winsport has 4 rinks and there usually were 4 countries having practice at the same time. European teams use games to warm-up and to practice skills much more than we do in North America.

Key Points:

‘The Game is the Greatest Coach.’ Play in one zone and practice working together. Use various rules. In the video they are playing 'One Pass.'

Description:

1. Game is in one zone and if the puck goes over the blue line the other team gets it.
2. Puck changes possession on a goal or a frozen puck.
3. Transition to offense by making at least one pass before you can shoot.
4. Use modified rules such as: one pass, two passes, only forehand, only backhand, goals only on one touch shots, two touch or two seconds with the puck, puck carrier must make an escape move, goals must originate from the point, goals must originate from below the goal line, only one pass allowed, only certain kinds of shots like a backhand or slap shot, etc..

Organization:

Divide the ice into 4 lanes with a group going down and back on the outside and middle lane on each half. Introduce a new skill after each down and back.

We did this game in practice last night and it created great low battles needing quick escape moves and the defenders learning how to see the puck and their check when the puck is low. It also created a lot of back door plays.This transferred to skills needed with the Spread PPlay using the two low attackers below the goal line. I saw this set up used while coaching in Austria and it is very hard to cover because backs tend to get turned and cross ice passes for one timers and back door walk-outs are very hard to handle for the pk.

Jokers must learn to protect the puck and make plays on their own or passes. Everyone learns to play low in the zone on offense and defense.

Description:

1. Each team has two low jokers.

Description:

4 Lane Flow

Players who start at the inside lanes go.

Mission Impossible

* You can also make this into “Mission Impossible” where the players do tasks like skating through obstacles, they must score, jump over, slide under, stickhandle through a maze of pucks etc. If they fail they must go back to where they started and do it again. You give a time limit and half go and half are judges or the coaches can judge..

I also have attached a picture and short bio of the staff I was lucky enough to coach with in Salzburg, Austria. We shared the same large coaching room where we had our own computers with the Steva program to break down the games for seven months. It also had a Red Bull fridge full of the product and Carpe Diem which is another drink they make that is incredibly refreshing but only available in Europe. We had lots of great discussions.

Mandate from Red Bull owner was to have coaches from all the major hockey countries. There were two Swedes, one Finn, Czech, Slovak, American, Austrian and HC was Pierre Page.

I was coaching Mount Royal Women but also doing skills at the Edge to pay my sons tuition and hockey fee. After five seasons there I got a call in the summer from the Red Bull GM who said they had identified 4 NA skill coaches and I was at the top of the list to take the position. I talked with my wife who was still nursing but didn't want to quit. I had offers before but none of the kid's wanted to go. They were all grown up and moved out. We agreed I could go for a year, so I accepted. It was the summer and I had finished recruiting. I resigned from Mount Royal and found them my replacement who is still there. I left as coach of the year with and all time leader in wins and 71% record. I think I was identified because the American coach in Salzburg stayed at my house on NCAA recruiting trips and knew that many of the boys I coached made the NHL. Two won the Calder and one the Hobey Baker. I don't take credit for their success but my name was associated with their development. So I am guessing that is how my name got brought up.

I met the Russian Olympic coach Jursinov 15 years before with Juhani Wahlsten and we did some clinics together in Finland. I was his guest coach for a few practices with TPS, Tuku. He came one week a month to run skills practices and would get me to give him English lessons when he was there.

It was a great experience living in one of the most beautiful places in the world and coaching with these guys.

Key Points:

Protect the puck, use fakes, escape moves, change of direction, feints, shoot and pass quickly, triple threat position.

Description:

1. Nets at each end of the circle and players start from the side.
2. Coach shoot a puck in (or player pass to teammate on the whistle.
3. Play 10-15” shifts.
4. Keep score.

*Option is to play form 1-1 to 3-3, i.e. 1-1, 2-1, 3-2, 3-3.

Key Points:
Play games with modified rules to isolate skills. Use regular and small nets.

Description:

1. Six big or small nets down one side of the ice.
2. When everyone is playing the rule is they must bounce the puck off the far boards to go onto offense.
3. Also play with the attack-defend-pass- rest and the defense passes to players waiting at the far boards.

* Change the rules, use different kinds of pucks and balls and play even and odd number situations.

* D200 1 on 1 game, where a team mate waits for a pass to go on offense is a fantastic way to practice stick handling. The play offense-defense-pass-rest and then on offense again.

Description:

1. Players start in a wide lane.
2. Coach pass the puck ahead and P1 skate for the puck while P2 tracks from behind.
3. P2 keeps steer P1 with his stick denying a pass back and approaches from slightly behind.
4. P2 angles P1 toward the boards and approaches at the back shoulder.

Key Points:

One touch passes only. Give a target and be ready to pass and shoot. Slide into open lanes.

Description:

1. Four attackers set up in a box vs. two defenders.
2. Only one touch passes and one touch shots are allowed.
3. Move into open lanes for a pass.
4. Defenders keep sticks in the passing lanes and block shots.
5. Have a contest and keep score.

*Progression is to start with two touch and progress to one touch passes.

*Practice 4-0, 4-1 then 4-2.

The major obstacle in most sports is that there is no consistent curriculum with a 'scope and sequence' to develop the skills, habits and game understanding to be effective players. Juhani Wahlsten and I developed this sequential program (with lots of input from the great Russian coach Vladimir Jursinov and Finnish Olympic coach Erkka Westerlund) and put it together for the Austrian Hockey Association and as a supplement to the program in Finland. The idea of this site is to continually update the material as the game changes and new practice and team play ideas are developed. Offense:
Role 1. Puck carrier.
Role 2. Support puck carrier.

Description:

1. Play 2 on 2 to focus on transition between the four game playing roles.
2. Extra players wait at the blue line or to create a tight area game at the top of the circles.
3. Attack and try to score.
4. On a goal, frozen puck or turn-over the defending team pass to waiting teammates.
5. New offensive players attack vs. the players who lost the puck on offense.
6. Players who passed now rest.

* Keep score and have tournaments.

* Any number from 1-1 to 5-5 can be used.

* Move the waiting players to reduce or expand space.

* Modified rules can be used to focus on individual or team skill.

Adversity is an inherent aspect of sports. Learning to deal with obstacles and challenges within the game is a critical aspect of individual and team development. How do you practice it??

Secure a Shoe Box and about 30 recipe cards.

Create two equally balanced teams within your team and colour coordinate them.

Create about 30 scenarios that your team’s play out over the course of a practice. Each scenario is written on a recipe card and teams draw a scenario out of the box and then play it out against the opponent. After the scenario is completed, the other team draws from the box. Keep score and watch the level of compete go off the charts! Players will become very excited as to the outcome of the draw.

Sample scenarios which can be used for Hockey or Soccer. Adapt for your sport:

A. Your team took two bad penalties. Play shorthanded for a one minute shift.

B. Your team has pulled your goaltender. Play a 1 minute shift without the goalie.

C. Your defensemen lost their stick. Play a 1 minute shift with one defensemen without a stick.

D. Have a three player shootout.

E. Defensemen are not able to cross the defensive blue line. Play a 1 minute shift.

F. Forwards must stay in the offensive zone only and offsides are permitted. Play a 1 minute shift.

E. Electric Chair shift. Two vs Two Full-Ice for 1 minute.

F. Cross-Eyed shift for both teams. This entails players hands being reversed for the entire 1 minute shift.

What other ideas can be used in the Adversity Cup??? (Tom's question)

Scores typically end up in the 10-15 range. Depending on the luck of the draw, the tide can change very quickly. Feel free to use TheDrillbook Adversity Cup several times throughout the year and simply adapt some of the scenarios.

I recommend the TheDrillbook as it has lots of great coaching ideas.The Calgary Royals organization supplies a copy of their program to all the teams.

Team Signs - How is your culture doing?

Team and Culture - these concepts in business and sport seem to be interchangeable. They both involve how your people feel about your organization, function in your organization and consequently, how well your people produce results.

In business and sports... "Leaders influence culture and culture brings in results."

I will turn fifty-seven this April. Fifty-one years ago I began a lifetime of participating on teams. Like you, I have played on amazing teams, difficult teams, teams I couldn’t wait to be around, and teams I couldn’t wait to leave.

Most of us can feel when our team is going wrong, but few people invest the time required to understand how to fix their cultures. This reminds me of an NHL coach who reads the team’s stats, complains to his centres that their face-off percentage is way down, but doesn’t know how to work with them to improve their face-off skill.

It’s not good enough to just complain. Fans complain... Players find solutions.

How do we tinker with culture? How about the team will? Leadership is involved for sure, but fixing these things must start with recognizing what needs to be fixed.

Here is my list of indicators to help you discover which Team Development work you need most in 2015:

When our Team is on, this is what you will observe:

1- Logos not Numbers

This is a learned people skill. When it is operating at an optimum level, our people consistently do not talk to our numbers (no gossip), they talk to our LOGOS (face to face). This team concept is simple, but when it isn’t in place, the fallout can be highly destructive.

Conversely, when it is fully implemented, the results are incredibly refreshing. Speaking to the person you were going to complain about takes courage, but in the end, this action allows that person to create a solution. (For real life examples of this concept, check out the videos at http://www.ryanwalter.com)

Opening up communication does not begin and end with a one-time speech. In order to be fully implemented, this concept must become part of your 2015 Business Process. We would enjoy helping you use the Os Guinness technique to sink this deep into your culture’s psyche.

Key Question: “What happens if our culture consistently complains behind leadership’s back?”

2- Culture and Brand are not an after-thought

Some leaders I meet laugh off soft-skill development. “Those soft skills are for soft people!” they say. Woops! These are the same leaders who wake up one day and ask, “Why isn’t our culture bringing in the results that I promised my board?”

Remember, Leaders INFLUENCE culture, and culture delivers RESULTS!

When the desired results are not being consistently produced, either the way the leader is influencing the culture must change, or the leader must personally change. The mindset of our people influences the mindset of our culture and in turn, the mindset of our clients. Do you have a plan in place to positively and progressively influence your people’s thinking in 2015?

Over the past 8 months our company finds ourselves creating client-impact by increasing cultural awareness of the 5 states of mind where our people ruminate. With this new knowledge we work to help equip leaders to shift our people's personal and cultural thinking into what we call an F+ (FUTURE POSITIVE- a more productive mindset). As the visual demonstrates below, in order to improve results, we must positively influence MINDSET.

Key Question: “How do we positively influence our people’s thinking, and our clients’ mindset?”

3- Leadership is focused on, honoured, developed and multiplied

The missing ingredient essential for NHL teams to win the Stanley Cup is usually not more talent, but rather, more leadership. Why do some teams trade for that veteran player who has played on successful teams in the past? He or she brings the right experience, wrapped in the right attitude to help generate a long run deep into the playoffs.

Trading for leaders is an option, but it isn’t foolproof. Leaders from other cultures bring baggage. Long-term success in the NHL and in business comes from growing the leadership capacity of the rookies in our culture who are showing promise in this area.

John Maxwell says, “Leadership is Influence!” By keeping our eyes open to who has influence in our culture, we gain a sense of who our next leaders might be. Maxwell also says, “Leaders are Learners!” The multiplier of your success is to implement a process that helps develop the people who are showing leadership promise in your culture.

Finally (a lot of Maxwell here), John Maxwell warns, “If we grow ourselves to be a 6 out of 10 as a leader, our people have a chance to be a 5. If we grow ourselves to be anv8 out of 10 as a leader, our people have a chance to be a 7.” Our culture will never grow past our own personal leadership capacity!

Key Question: “Have we formalized a plan to grow the multiplier of our success, our people's leadership capacity, in 2015?”

4- Focus on Energy, not Time

It takes consistent energy, not just putting in the time, to bring results. Hard work is critical to maximizing performance, but hard work should not be disguised as more hours, rather, more results. If you are leading a team most of your people will feel obligated to stay at the office as long as you do. But are they productive, energized and creating results or are they reading the paper on their computer? I have been a President and CEO of a professional hockey team as well as an NHL Assistant Coach. I have done this; I have seen this.

Leaders focus on results, which is great, but sometimes forget that the energy of their people and team is the important long-term generator of optimal results - that means physical energy, emotional energy, cultural energy, mental energy and yes, spiritual energy. As many leaders have learned, all of our energy is interconnected. If you hire a young sales person full of energy and he or she is surrounded by a lethargic culture, what happens?

Key Question: “What will we do to enhance our personal and cultural energy in 2015?”

5- What we believe… expands

Some leaders believe that their people should fear them (insecure leaders consistently need to feel feared). Other leaders believe that culture is not important. Still others command: “you just do what I say!” Many more believe in collaboration. Whatever it is that we believe as leaders, influences our culture. As my agent during my NHL career, Herb Pinder, often reminded me, “After 3 or 4 months, every team takes on the personality and character of its coach.”
I have often heard coaches and leaders consistently talk down the character and qualities of their people. This is always misguided because we receive what we believe about our people. I once had a coach who believed more in me than I believed in myself, and I developed towards his expectations of me, and had an amazing season.

Early in 2015, I recommend that we talk through (and I would love to coach you here) how you want to develop as a leader personally, because your attitude towards growth, culture, your players’ energy and your process to communicate will be the main thing that holds back or enhance your business and grow your results in 2015!

Game Transitions - Offense-Defense-Loose Puck

The video clip below will surprise most coaches when you see how many transitions there are in ONE hockey shift. The nature of the game is that a player is constantly transitioning from offense to defense to loose puck battles. This shows how good habits like facing the puck with the stick on the ice, defensive side, quick offense need to be made a priority when we practice. Transition from offense to defense to loose puck is the constant in the game and the teams that do that best will be the most successful.

I am posting a video that shows these constant transitions in a hockey game. All of the skating, offensive and defensive skills and good habits are needed to be effective.

Detroit vs. Pittsburgh - a demonstration of the transition between the 3 game situations, and 4 game playing roles in one minute of an NHL game.

0-Loose Puck 1-Offensive 2-Defensive Situations are worked on as well as the Four Game Playing Roles

Offense: Role 1 – player with the puck and Role 2 – players supporting the puck carrier.

Defense: Role 3 – player checking the puck carrier. Role 4 – players covering away from the puck.

(The colours are from the posting on the transitions in a hockey game that shows one minute of Detroit vs. Pittsburg and the colours appear at the top when Detroit is 0-battling for a loose puck 1-on offense 2-on defense.. It is a great example of what really happens in a hockey game and why it is a game of transition. The video was prepared by Kai Katajalehto who coaches in Finland. )

C3 Breakout-Regroup 1-1 to 3-2 - Pro

Key Points:

Alternate between a single and a double hinge. Implement a stretch into the breakout. Add up to 2 D and 3 F.

Description:

1. Blue F and Red D at one blue line - Red F and Blue D at the other.
2. Blue F1 Start with a shot or rim the goalie must handle and set up for the Red D1.
3. Red D1 make a breakout pass to the Blue F1.
4. Blue F1 skate throught the neutral zone and regroup with the Blue D2.
5. Blue F1 attack vs. Red D1.
6. Red F2 shoot the puck in.
7. Blue D2 skate back and make a breakout pass to Red F2 who regroups with Blue D3.
7. Continue this flow 1-1, 2-1, 2-2, 3-2.

I moved the starting point up to the blue lines and added a dump-in or a long shot to start a drill. It causes the goalie to handle the puck and set it up for the D.

USA Hockey has been encouraging hockey organizations and coaches to use a new development model. Both Canada and USA are stuck in the Full Ice is best mind set. Other parts of the hockey world, especially countries in Europe have been using Cross Ice Games for young players.

Here is a study by USA Hockey where they taped monitors to every player in both cross ice and full ice games. The results show that there are far more touches, passes, shots, etc. in cross ice.

Defender see the puck and his man. Player behind the net must keep his skates below the goal line but can wrap around score. Battle for the net side. Protect the puck, shoot quick, goalie track the puck.

Description:

1. Play 1-1 in front with a Joker behind the goal line.
2. Joker can score but skates must be below the goal line.
3. Rotation is 1 behind the net is the new defender.
4. The original defender 2 becomes the attacker.
5. Original attacker returns to the line in the corner.

Rotation Sequence:

a. on a goal,
b. the goalie freezes the puck,
c. it is passed to 4 in the corner
d. goes out of the zone.

*Alternative is to have 2-2 with either one or two Jokers.

Description:

Key Points:

Protect the puck, use fakes and change the type of passes and the situation.
This is a great game to practice puck support, getting open, passing and puck protection.

Description:

1. Active players are in the middle.
2. Jokers are lined up along the blue lines with half the team on each side.
3. Passes to Jokers are allowed.
4. Play even situations up to 3-3.
5. Vary the situations 2-1, 3-1, 3-2.
6. On whistle leave from one end and return to the line-up at the other end.

* Award one point for making 5 consecutive passes to the players in the middle and keep score.

* Make a Tocar-Tocar (two touch).

* This is also a great hockey specific conditioning activity.

Middle and wall support, give a target, hinge, defenders play tight gaps, skate while passing, pass hard.

Description:

1. R1-R2 regroup with B5-B6.
2. B3-B4 follow and play a tight gap.
3. R1-2 attack vs. B3-4.
4. B5-6 follow and support from top of circles.
5. Goal, frozen puck or turn-over B3-4 pass to B5-6 and follow the rush.
7. B5-6 attack vs. R1-2 who now defend with a tight gap.

D1 Three Line Continuous Game – U15 Boy’s

Key Points:

Give close support to the puck. Defending team create speed through the neutral zone after the breakout. New defending team identify coverage when the attackers enter the zone.

Description:

Three teams play full ice.

1-Red attacks vs Green at one end.
2-Green breaks out and attacks vs. Black waiting at the other end.
3-Black breaks out and attacks Red.
4-Green rests at the original end.
5-Black attack vs. Green.

They keep this rotation and play a game up to 5. Start another game at 0-0 but switch who they attack first i.e. now Green attacks Red and Red attack vs. Black and Black vs. Green. This rotation can be used to practice team play at full strength and power play and penalty kill.

Defense hinge and forwards support from each lane and give a target. One D join the attack. Play 5-2 until the play has ended. Make it a contest and keep score.

Description:

1. Start with the forwards dumping the puck deep in the zone.
2. Breakout 5-0.
3. Two opposition D follow the play and skate backward in the neutral zone.
4. Regroup with the opposition D.
5. D hinge and either pass to the forwards or feign a turn-over by passing to the attacking D.
6. Original D hinge and regroup with their forwards.

I have posted this game before with my Women's College players and the Swiss U20 World Junior Team. This is a more recent example with U15 Bantam AA boy's. This and other games are templates for the coach to use for skill development. Add rules like only forehand passes, an escape move before passing, goals must be on one timers or one touch shots, goals must come from plays originating from below the goal line, goals must come from give and go plays, two seconds with the puck, one second with the puck, etc..It is a great example of a 'Game that can teach the Game.'

Key Points:

Quick support, get open, give a target, checker on puck, cover away from the puck, box out, take sticks, fight for rebounds. The quicker they make the passes after regaining the puck the more scoring chances they produce. The game is the template and then you can add skill or good habit rules to practice 'How to Play the Game.'

Description:

1. Players must stay inside the blueline and if they puck goes out the other team gets it.
2. Before scoring the offensive team must make at least two passes.
3. When the defenders regain the puck they must make at least two passes before a shot.
4. Make rules with skills for skating, shooting, passing or good habits.

Key Points:

Breakout, skate to the big ice, screen, shot pass, tip, post up.

Description:

1. Forwards in the middle and D in opposite corners.
2. Start with D1 in front moving for a pass from the D2 in the corner.
3. F1 support on the boards and F2 come mirror the D to D pass across.
4. D1 pass to F1 who skates between the dots to the big ice.
5. F2 cross and take the ice behind to the wide lane.

Key Points:

Attack with speed. New point players support the attack and new forwards support the defenders. Practice offensive and defensive team play concepts.

Description:

1. Start with a 3 on 2 attack.
2. When the puck crosses the blue line two new players join the attack supporting from the point.
3. Three forwards support the defense, the first play the low 3-3, second cover mid-point, third strong side point to create ‘one on and a box behind.’
4. Attack with a middle drive and cycling until the whistle.
5. On the whistle the three new forwards who supported the defense attack 3 on 2 vs. the two players on the point.

* Regroups and dump-ins can be added to this drill.

* Next progression is eliminate the whistles and allow the natural game flow but allow free breakouts on goals or frozen pucks. Regroup on dump outs.

How the NHL Plays the Game in 2015

Some thoughts of how the game is now being played at the NHL level.

I have seasons tickets to the Flames and watch a lot of practices and this is a change I have seen in the last few months. Detroit, Chicago and a few other teams always played like this but now it looks like all the teams have changed to a more dynamic style to counter the way teams now defend. Here is what I see.

Very interesting watching the NHL lately. Most teams now play a 2-1-2 game of 'Total Hockey' reading 1-2-3-4-5. They pinch on wide rims and also on the strong side when they have and F3 to fill behind. They also attack with 4 and one D joins the attack and often both D to at least the top of the circle.

In the defensive end most swarm when the attacker is facing the boards, both even and pk. Lots of teams still have trouble covering F3 on the cycle. The D wants to stand in front of the net instead of moving out at least half way. (Crosby passed to F3 twice for goals two nights ago) A principle they would get better results with is. Closest defender on tight, second closest within a stick length and third closest half way.

To break the forecheck the winger goes tight to the point and chips out or if the D's skate caps are up ice they fly the zone for a stretch pass and then tip in back to an oncoming player or chip it in. The better players get between the dots with the puck to create more options.

Teams attack with the middle drive and the widest play decides whether to stay wide for the pass across or become a trailer.

Defending teams collapse deep into the slot area and leave the points open. The new foot gaurds allow a lot more shot blocking without foot injuries so moving the puck to diagonal shooters is one of the only ways to get shots through. Defending in the nzone is like the forecheck. F1 locks the strong side boards, D1 protects the middle and D2 plays tight on the wide attacker.

Everyone uses the Diamond 1-3-1 power play and I see more inverted 1-3-1 setting up behind the net now. The cross pass really works vs. teams that don't have the F in the middle go up and back. The second F will 'fall under' behind F1 and go to the first pass side.

Most goals are scored with 'passes off the pad', one timers and deflections off shots or shot passes. Goals off the rush are usually a result of turn-overs just inside the defensive blue line.

Key Points:

Defenders must communicate situation and switch from man on man to 2-1 to man on man to 3-2 then man on man 3-3. Forwards must quickly take advantage of the 2-1 and 3-2. Defending forwards have to come back to low slot, mid-slot and puck side point.

Description:

1. Players line up outside the blue line and wait for a Coach dump-in.
2. One D starts skating backward and one F forechecks 1 on 1.
3. A second forward makes it a 2 on 1.
4. Another D joins creating a 2 on 2.
5. A third forward makes it 3 on 2.
6. Three defending forwards join and make it a 3 on 5.
7. F2 back defend the mid-point and collapse into the middle if the puck is in far corner.
8. F3 cover the strong side point and collapse lower when puck is low in the zone.
9. F2 has net front when 2 D and F1 play man on man on one side.
10. Coach put in a new puck if the original puck is out of play.

* This is a chance to actively coach coming back into the defensive zone.

Key Points:

Make sure the players cross the red line before turning or there will be collisions. Also
skate along the red line before turning so the goalie has time for the next shot. Hit the
net.

Description:

1. 3 players from diagonal corners leave on the coaches whistle.
2. Skate along the boards and cross the red line.
3. First player go straight and shoot from the lane. Second player skate parallel to the
red line and turn into the centre lane and shoot from just over the blueline. Third player
skate to the far lane before turning and taking a shot.
4. Follow the shot and screen or tip from the front of the net.

* In the video the pro’s leave one corner at a time. By crossing the red line before turning both corners can leave at once which is good with larger groups where all 4 corners can alternate.

* Another option is to add a pass from the second player who steps out.

B. Once the players have the routine and aren’t crashing into each other add zig-zags between the top of the circles and blue lines. I do 3 reps and require different puck handling skills each time. i.e. 1st time, keep the hands and feet moving all the time. 2nd time only carry the puck using the forehand part of the stick. 3rd time face the far end
always skating forward and then transition skate to backward. Other options: only the back hand part of the stick, backward skating, stick to feet, etc.

C. 3 shot, 3 zig zags, 3 passes, 3 shots. 1. Start with 3 players skating from the corner and shooting 2 “ apart. 2. each player gets a pass from the opposite corner. 3. Do 3 zigzags between the top of the circle and blue line. 4. Fill the 3 lanes and shoot at the far end and rebound.
